  • In this study, the optical properties, heat transfer capabilities and chemical reaction performance of a methane thermal decomposition reactor using solar heat as a heat source were numerically analyzed on the basis of the cavity shape. The optical properties were analyzed using TracePro, a Monte Carlo ray tracing-based program, and the heat transfer analysis was performed using Fluent, a CFD program. An indirect heating tubular reactor was rotated at a constant speed to prevent damage by the heat source in the solar furnace. The inside of the reactor was filled with a porous catalyst for methane decomposition, and the outside was insulated to reduce heat loss. The performance of the reactor, based on cavity shape, was calculated when solar heat was concentrated on the reactor surface and methane was supplied into the reactor in an environment with a solar irradiance of 700 W/㎡, a wind speed of 1 m/s, and an outdoor temperature of 25℃. Thus, it was confirmed that the heat loss of the full-cavity model decreased to 13% and the methane conversion rate increased by 33.5% when compared to the semi-cavity model.

  • Influence of trace amount of Ca addition on the corrosion resistance was comparatively investigated in solutionized Mg-4%Zn and Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloys. In as-cast state, the alloys were characterized by primary ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ dendrite with MgZn intermetallic compound particles. After solution-treatment, both alloys consisted of single ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ phase by dissolution of the compound particles into the matrix. It was found from the immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests that the Mg-4%Zn alloy had better corrosion resistance than the Mg-4%Zn-0.1%Ca alloy. Morphological and compositional analyses on the surface corrosion products indicate that the incorporation of Ca oxide with low PBR value into the surface corrosion products would be responsible for the decreased corrosion resistance of the Ca-containing alloy.

  • An high-speed isothermal calorimeter which can trace the progress of a liquid phase reversible reaction was constructed using analog and digital computer. By means of a set point change of the calorimeter, the thermal energy capacity and the heat of reaction in reversible reaction mixture can be measured. The heat of reaction between 2-methyl furan and maleic anhydride and the heat capacities of the adduct were 61,200 J/mol and 2.38 J/ g K, respectively. Also reaction equilibrium constant and reaction rate constants can be estimated from the response curves of the calorimeter.

  • The heat (mass) transfer characteristics on the endwall surface of a first-stage linear turbine rotor cascade at off-design conditions has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The experiments are carried out at the Reynolds number of $2.78{\times}10^{5}$ for two incidence angles of -5% and +5%. The positive incidence angle results in intensification of the pressure-side leg of a leading-edge horseshoe vortex, which delivers higher heat transfer along its trace. On the other hand, the negative incidence angle show an opposite tendency.

  • In order to evaluate the performance of fire-fighting agents used to protect structures from heat and fire damages, the thermal characteristics of fire-protection foams are experimentally investigated. The current research focuses on the destruction of a fire-fighting foam subjected to heat radiation. A simple repeatable test for fire-protection foams subjected to fire radiation is developed. This test involves foam generation equipment, a fire source for heat generation, repeatable test procedures, and data acquisition techniques. Results of the experimental procedure indicated that each thermocouple within the foam responded in a similar manner and gradually to a temperature of $15^{\circ}C{\sim}20^{\circ}C$. At this point, each trace generally rises to a temperature of approximately $90^{\circ}C$. The temperature gradient in the foam as time passes increases with increased foam expansion ratio. In addition, it is determined that the temperature gradient along the foam for depth decreases with increased foam expansion ratio.

  • Heat transfer distributions and friction factors in square channels (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. The rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter ratio, $e/D_h$, is kept at 0.067 and test section length-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, $L/D_h$ is 30. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite ribbed walls of the square channel. Results show that the twisted tape with interrupted ribs provides a higher overall heat transfer performance over the twisted tape with no ribs.

  • Surface modifications like rib-roughening and displaced insert devices like the twisted tape are commonly used in applications such as compact heat exchangers and cooling systems. In this paper, regionally averaged heat transfer distributions in square channels with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Regionally averaged Nusselt number and channel averaged Nusselt number in turbulent air flows are presented for Reynold numbers from 8,900 to 29,000. We have obtained the following conclusions from the experimental study: 1) The local Nusselt number in the two-sided heated case is higher than that in the four-sided heated condition. 2) In the 4 heating wall channel with twisted tape inserts, Nusselt number based on bottom wall temperature is enhanced by 1.2 - 1.6 times if adding the axial interrupted ribs on the bottom wall only. 3) The twisted tape with interrupted ribs under the two-sided heating condition produces the highest heat transfer coefficient.

  • It was reported that Red ginseng contains specific ginsenoside-Rg$_2$,-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$, which show various pharmacological effects. However, production of these specific ginsenosides from Red ginseng is not commercially applicable because of high cost of the raw material, roots. This work was carried out to examine the production of Red ginseng specific ginsenosides from Agrobacterium-transformed hairy roots. Hairy roots were induced from 3 year-old root segment of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) after infection with Agrobacterium rhizogenes A4. Among many lines of hairybroots, KGHR-8A was selected. Steam heat treatment of hairy roots was resulted in the changes of ginsenoside composition. Eleven ginsenosides were detected in heat-treated hairy roots but eight in freeze dried hairy roots. In heat treated hairy root, content of ginsenoside-Rb$_1$,Rb$_2$,Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, and Rg$_1$were decreased compared to those of freeze dried hairy roots. However, heat treatment strongly enhanced the amount of Red ginseng specific ginsenogides (ginsenoside-Rg$_2$,-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$). Amounts of ginsenoside-Rg$_3$,-Rh$_1$and -Rh$_2$ in heat-treated hairy roots were 2.58, 3.62 and 1.08 mg/g dry wt, respectively, but these were detected as trace amount in hairy roots without heat treatment. Optimum condition of heat treatment for the production of Red ginseng specific ginsenoside was 2 h at 105$^{\circ}C$. This result represents that Red ginseng specific ginsenoside can be producted from hairy roots by steam heat treatment.

  • Numerical simulations and experiment of a hydrodynamic and thermally developed turbulent flow through square ducts (3.0 ${\times}$ 3.0 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and friction factors. Turbulent swirl flows having Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000, a rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/D$_h$) of 0.067, and a length-to-hydraulic diameter(L/D$_h$) of 30, are considered. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. The twisted tape has 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 2.8 cm, length of 90 cm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall is composed of isolated aluminum sections, and two cases of surface heating are set. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and square ducts with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs produces the best overall transfer performance.

  • Accurate heat release analysis based on the cylinder pressure trace is important for evaluating combustion process of diesel engines. However, traditional single-zone heat release models (SZM) have significant limitations due mainly to their simplified assumptions of uniform charge and homogeneity while neglecting local temperature distribution inside cylinder during combustion process. In this study, a heat release analysis based on single-zone model has been evaluated by comparison with computational simulation result using Fire-code, which is based on multidimensional model (MDM). The limitations of the single-zone assumption have been estimated, To overcome these limitations, an improved model that includes the effects of spatial non-uniformity has been applied. From this improved single-zone heat release model (Improved-SZM), two effective values of specific heat ratios, denoted by ${\gamma}_V$ and ${\gamma}_H$ in this study, have been introduced. These values are formulated as the function of charge temperature changing rate and overall equivalence ratio. Also, it is applied that each equation of ${\gamma}_V$ and ${\gamma}_H$ has respectively different slopes according to several meaningful periods during combustion progress. The heat release analysis results based on improved single-zone model gives a good agreement with FIRE-code results over the whole range of operating conditions of target engine, Hyundai HiMSEN H21/32.
