  • Surface heat balance of the Gangjeong-Goryung Reservoir is analyzed for 12-17 August 2013. Each flux elements at the water surface is derived from the special field observations with application of an aerodynamical bulk method for the turbulent heat fluxes and empirical formulae for the radiation heat fluxes. The rate of heat storage in the reservoir is estimated by using estimated by surface heating rate and the vertical water temperature data. The flux divergence of heat transport is estimated as a residual. The features of the surface heat balance are almost decided by the latent heat flux and the solar radiation flux. On average for 12-17 August 2014 in the Gangjeong- Goryung Reservoir, if one defines the insolation at the water surface as 100 %, 94 % is absorbed in the reservoir; thereafter the reservoir loses about 30~50% by sensible heat, latent heat and net long-wave radiation. The residue of 50~80 % raises the water temperature in the reservoir or transported away by the river flow during the daytime.

  • A dynamic model of a water heater system heated by a heat pump was developed. The water heater system was composed of heat pump and hot water reservoirs. Finite volume method (FVM) was applied to describe the heat exchangers. A new constraint on electronic expansion valve (EEV) or thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) that can control superheat after the evaporator was developed. Dynamic performances were evaluated for various sizes of the reservoir. In order to compare those performances, time scale was normalized by time constant representing the characteristics of reservoir size. Time constant was determined from quasi steady-state simulation of the system. From the simulation, the size of the water heater reservoir was found to have a large influence on the transient performance of the sys- tem. Therefore, the optimization of the reservoir size is needed in a design process.

  • The heat budget is investigated in the Gumi Reservoir of the Nakdong river. In warm climate season, solar radiation effects play a important role in the change of water temperature. The features of the surface heat balance are almost derived by the latent heat flux and the solar radiation flux. On the other hand, in cold climate season, change of heat stored in the water is mainly dominated by latent and sensible heat transfer between water and air, since flux of solar radiation and loss of outgoing long wave radiation balance approximately. For the annual averages, net flux of radiation, evaporation(latent heat) loss are dominant in the Gumi reservoir. The evaporation losses are dominant from spring to early winter. This means that the Gumi reservoir rolls like a lake of thermal medium or deep depth.

  • The CPLs(capillary pumped loops) are two phase heat transfer devices which enable active control of operating temperature of heat absorbing elements(or evaporators). Although the CPLs gain increasing interests as promising heat transfer devices for future missions such as spacecraft and commercial applications, their intrinsic complexity in operating principles makes the widespread use of these devices difficult. The key element and main cause of this complexity in operating principles is the two phase hydrodynamic accumulator or reservoir which controls the saturation state of the remaining loop and, particularly for the CPLs, it is separated from the evaporator. Thus, in this study, the operating characteristics of the CPL is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Mainly focusing on the role of reservoir the thermodynamic operating principle is examined first and the experimentally obtained steady state and transient state operating characteristics are discussed in detail.

  • The transport of contaminants and spatial variation in a deep reservoir are certainly governed by the thermal structure of the reservoir. There has been continuous efforts to utilize three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality models for supporting reservoir management, but the efforts to validate the models performance using extensive field data were rare. The study was aimed to evaluate a 3D hydrodynamic model, ELCOM, in Daecheong Reservoir for simulating heat fluxes and stratification processes under hydrological years of 2001, 2006, 2008, and to assess the impact of internal wave on the reservoir mixing. The model showed satisfactory performance in simulating the water temperature profiles: the absolute mean errors at R3 (Hoenam) and R4 (Dam) sites were in the range of $1.38{\sim}1.682^{\circ}C$. The evaporative and sensible heat losses through the reservoir surface were maximum during August and January, respectively. The net heat flux ($H_n$) was positive from February to September, while the stratification formed from May and continued until September. Instant vertical mixing was observed in the reservoir during strong wind events at R4, and the model reasonably reproduced the mixing events. A digital low-pass filter and zero crossing method was used to evaluate the potential impact of wind-driven internal wave on the reservoir mixing. The results indicated that most of the wind events occurred in 2001, 2006, 2008 were not enough to develop persistent internal wave and effective mixing in the reservoir. ELCOM is a suitable 3D model for supporting water quality management of the deep and stratified reservoirs.

  • The time variations in relative humidity observed at the Gangjeong (Goryeong) Reservoir in the Nakdong River over a one-year period (September 2012-August 2013) were analyzed with the Bowen ratio. The thermal vertical scale of the reservoir was also evaluated following Yamamoto's method. The study's results showed that the relative humidity at the reservoir was higher than that of the Daegu Meteorological Observatory (inland) all year round. The difference was slightly larger at nighttime (17-20 %) than at daytime (13-15 %) in all seasons except summer. The quantitative order of latent heat flux was summer, spring, autumn, and winter. This finding signifies that the thermal vertical scale of the reservoir corresponds to that of a shallow lake. The Bowen ratio was smallest at midday of the summer season. In other words, the net radiation energy was converted more as latent heat flux than sensible heat flux during a higher temperature period.

  • To recognize the spatial and temporal variability of water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the Youngsan reservoir formed after dike construction, water temperature and dissolved oxygen data have been observed and analyzed from April, 2002 until March, 2003. As the results, certain stratifications were not distinctly observed in the Youngsan reservoir during summer, which was estimated due to the drainage characteristic from the Youngsan water gates. The yearly variation of water temperature in the Youngsan reservoir is shown seasonally ups and downs by the heat exchange between the atmosphere and the reservoir. On the other hand, dissolved oxygen and water temperature in the Youngsan reservoir have been shown inversed proportional correlation. As the calculation results of residence time and water exchange rate, it is considered that the feature of oxygen distribution is determined by the drainage characteristics caused the shortest residence time during summer, which also disturbed the formation of stratification in the Youngsan reservoir.

  • $Nb_3Sn$ superconducting wires were fabricated in order to investigate the effect of pre-heat treatment for internal tin process. 2 types of Sn reservoir were fabricated. One was arranged one large Sn reservoir in the center of wire, the other arranged several Sn reservoirs inthe wire. Diffusion of Sn is better in the strand divided Sn equally than in the strand had one large Sn reservoir during pre heat-treatment. Critical current was better in the wires divided Sn reservoirs uniformly after whole heat treatment.

  • We analyzed the characteristics of fog formation in the Gumi Reservoir of Nakdong river with the field observation data for recent 2 years (1 April 2013~31 March 2015) collected by the national institute of meteorological research, KMA. In early morning, we frequently observe the steam rising from the water surface. The fog occurs from adding water vapor into the air. We call the fog as steam fog. Steam fogs occur when cold, dry air mixes with warm, moist air above a water surface. The steam fog appears mainly in autumn under the following conditions; (1) sensible heat is positive values ($10{\sim}20W/m^2$), (2) latent heat is more positive values ($25{\sim}35W/m^2$) than sensible heat, (3) cloudless nights with light winds (about 1.5 m/s), (4) under condition(3), mountainous winds easily blows into the reservoir.

  • According to previous studies, the increased air temperature can lead to change of thermal stratification structure of lakes and reservoirs. The changed thermal stratification may result in alteration of materials and energy flow. The objective of this study was to predict the effect of climate change on the water temperature and stratification structure of Daecheong Reservoir, located in Geum River basin of Korea, using a three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamic model(ELCOM). A long-term(100 years) weather data set provided by the National Institute of Meteorological Research(NIMR) was used for forcing the 3D model. The model was applied to two different hydrological conditions, dry year(2001) and normal year(2004). It means that the effect of air temperature increase was only considered. Simulation results showed that the surface water temperature of the reservoir tend to increase in the future, and the establishment of thermal stratification can occur earlier and prolonged longer. As a result of heat flux analysis, the evaporative heat loss can increase in the future than now and before. However, the convective heat loss and net long wave radiation from water surface decreased due to increased air temperature.
