In a gas engine based cogeneration system, heat is recovered from two parts, which are jacket water and exhaust gas. The heat from the jacket water is often recovered by a plate type heat exchanger and used for the room heating and/or hot water supply. Depending on the operating conditions of engine and heat recovery system, there should be imbalance in the flow rate and supply pressure between engine and heat recovery side of the heat exchanger. The imbalance cause the deformation of the plate, which affects the pressure drop characteristics. In the present study, the pressure drop inside the heat exchanger has been investigated in a 1/5 scaled test rig and compare with the experimental correlations, which are used for the design.
The cooling load in winter is significant in many commercial buildings and hotels because of the usage of office equipments and the high efficiency of wall insulation. The development of a multi-heat pump that can cover heating and cooling simultaneously for each indoor unit is required. In this study, the performance of a multi-heat pump with 3-piping system was investigated as a function of refrigerant charge and its performance was analyzed in cooling mode, heating mode, and heat recovery mode. COP in the heating or cooling mode showed little dependence on refrigerant charge at overcharge conditions, while those were strongly dependent on refrigerant charge at undercharge conditions and outdoor inlet temperature. In the heat recovery mode, the performance of the system was very sensitive to charge amount at all conditions. Optimum charge amount in the heat recovery mode was 14% lower than that in the cooling mode at the standard condition because the refrigerant only passed the indoor units. It is required to store the excessive refrigerant charge in a storage tank to optimize the system performance at operating modes.
Heat recovery ventilators (HRV) are developed in order to satisfy both energy conservation and the improvement of indoor air quality as an alternative for current natural ventilation systems and local mechanical ventilation systems in kitchens and bathrooms. However, the performance of HRV system and the consequent effect on heating and cooling energy saving have not been sufficiently validated quantitatively in case of the application of HRVs in real residences. In this study, field measurement and computer simulation were conducted in both summer and winter period to assess the performance and validate energy conservation effect of HRVs. Under the Korea weather condition, average total heat recovery efficiency was $27\%$ in summer and $46\%$ in winter. According to the field measurement, HRV system can save the energy by $10\%$ in summer and 15$\%$ in winter. Furthermore, according to the simulation assessment, HRV system can save the energy by $17\%$ in summer and $17\%$ in winter.
As an innovative effort to secure economically viable heat recovery system, various fin shapes for industrial fin-tube heat exchangers have been studied for better performance. In this study, the waste gas heat recovery from four different fin shapes was experimentally performed for heat transfer rate and pressure drop. According to the tested results, the twist and wavy shape fins of rectangular type show the superior performance in terms of Goodness factor and jH/f factor ratio, whereas the circular spiral fin shows the inferior values. Experimental results shows good comparison with the numerical results with a slight discrepancy of 5%, which is quite resonable.
The Present work focuses on application of Organic Rankine Cycle - Waste heat Recovery System (ORC-WHRS) for marine diesel engine. ORC and its combined cycle with the engine were simulated and its performance was estimated theoretically under the various engine operation conditions and cooling water conditions. The working fluid, R245fa, was selected for the consideration of the heat source temperature, system efficiency and safety issues. According to the thermodynamic analysis, ~13.1% of system efficiency of the cycle was performed and it is about 4% of the mechanical power output of the considering Marine Diesel Engine. Also, addition of evaporator and pre-heater were studied to maximize output power of Organic Rankine Cycle as a waste heat recovery system of the marine diesel engine.
A computation routine, capable of performing thermal design analysis of the triple-pressure bottoming system (heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine) of combined cycle power plants, is developed. It is based on thermal analysis of the heat recovery steam generator and estimation of its size and steam turbine power. It can be applied to various parametric analyses including optimized design calculation. This paper presents analysis results for the effects on the design performance of heat exchanger arrangements at intermediate and high temperature parts as well as steam pressures. Also examined is the effect of steam sources for deaeration on design performance.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of after-treatment equipment and thermal storage devices for a heat recovery and combustor-type $CO_2$ generator fuelled a kerosene. To reduce the levels of harmful exhaust gases produced by a $CO_2$ generator, a catalyzed particulate filter(CPF) has been selected as an after-treatment device, by considering back pressure and exhaust gas temperature. The CO conversions of the catalyzed SiC filter(full plugging) were 92%, and the concentration of PM(particulate matter) was near ambient. A thermal recovery device was used to recover 13% of the heat energy from the exhaust gas through heat exchangers installed on the exhaust line of the $CO_2$ generator. 69% of the moisture within the exhaust gases was removed by condensing water, in order to minimize excessive humidity within the greenhouse.
The aim of this study is to investigate the parametric characteristics on regenerative system with oxy-fuel combustion by experiment. Regenerative system with a pair of oxygen burners and regenerators is used for evaluating regenerator characteristics according to design parameters such as ball (regenerator medium) size, regenerator weight, and bypass of exhaust gas. The temperature profiles with time are varied by ball size and regenerator weight. The bypass of exhaust gas shows that the heat recovery ratio increases while the regenerating temperature efficiency slightly decreases.
In order to improve the overall efficiency and meet the emission regulations of boiler systems, the heat exchanging methods between inlet air and exhaust gas have been used in boiler systems, named as the waste-heat-recovery condensing boiler. Recently, to further improve the overall efficiency and to reduce the NOx emission simultaneously, the concept of the water injection into the inlet air is introduced. This study suggests the models for the optimized design parameters of water injection for waste-heat-recovery condensing boilers and performs the analysis regarding the water injection amount and droplet sizes for the optimized water injection. At first, the required amount of the water injection was estimated based on the 1st law of thermodynamics under the assumption of complete evaporation of the injected water. The result showed that the higher the inlet air and exhaust gas temperature into the heat exchanger, the larger the amount of injected water is needed. Then two droplet evaporation models were proposed to analyze the required droplet size of water injection for full evaporation of injected water: one is the evaporation model of droplet in the inlet air and the other is that on the wall of heat exchanger. Based on the results of two models, the maximum allowable droplet sizes of water injection were estimated in various boiler operating conditions with respect to the residence time of the inlet air in the heat exchanger.
