To produce alloy powders with only Sm$_2$Fe$_{17}$ single phase by reduction-diffusion (R-D) method, the effect of excess samarium oxide on the preparation of Sm-Fe alloy powder during R-D heat treatment was studied. The quantity of samarium oxide was varied from 5% to 50% whereas iron and calcium were taken 0% and 200% in excess of chemical equivalent, respectively. The pellet type mixture of samarium, iron powders and calcium granulars was subjected to heat treatment at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The R-D treated pellet was moved into deionized water and agitated to separate Sm-Fe alloy powders. After washing them in deionized water several times, the powders were washed with acetic acid to remove the undesired reaction products such as CaO. By these washing and acid cleaning treatment, only 0.03 wt% calcium remained in Sm-Fe alloy powders. It was also confirmed that the content of unreacted $\alpha$-Fe in Sm$_2$Fe$_{17}$ matrix gradually decreased as the percentage of samarium oxide is increased. However, there was no significant change above 40% excess samarium oxide.
In this paper, in order to investigate the catalytic effect of the sludge exhausted from waterworks as heating temperature for NOx removal, we measure NO, $NO_2$ concentration as increasing temperature of sludge pellets and applying high voltage to sludge pellets in a quartz-glass reactor at the same time. NO initial concentration is 100ppm balanced with air gas in a mixing chamber. The gas flow is 5[l/min] and the heating temperature of sludge pellets in a quartz-glass reactor is adjusted from $200[^{\circ}C]$$400[^{\circ}C]$ to investigate the effect of sludge pellets for removal NOx$(NO+NO_2)$ as increasing temperature. $BaTiO_3$ pellets is filled in a packed-bed reactor for corona discharge to measure how much NOx$(NO+NO_2)$ is removed after generating $NO_2$ from the packed-bed reactor. AC[60Hz] voltage is supplied to the reactor for discharge. In the result, $NO_2$ concentration is decreased by sludge pellets without heating temperature for sludge pellets in case of sludge pellets done heat treatment, however NO concentration is almost the same to be compared NO initial concentration. As increasing heating temperature for sludge pellets, $NO_2$ adsorbed on the sludge surface done heat treatment is converted to NO by the thermal energy, so NO concentration is extremely increased by reduction decomposition of $NO_2$. Finally, We think the sludge is possible to use for reduction catalysts, however we need to study more about the possibility and endurance of sludge as catalysts for NOx removal.
Using SHS(Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) method, the optimum synthetic condition of titanium carbonitride was established by controlling the parameters such as relative density of mixture (Ti+C), nitrogen pressure, additive amounts of titanium hydride(TiH1.924) and protecting heat loss. Under 1 atm nitrogen pressure, nitridation ratio with changing relative density of the sample compacts has a maximum (87.2%) at about 55%, and in the case of enveloping the pellet with a quartz tube, the highest nitridation ratio of 90% was obtained at about 68%. At relative density of 55%, nitridation ratio with the nitrogen pressure has a miximum (87.3%) at 7 atm. As the amounts of additive titanium hydride increased, nitridation ratio decreased at below 7 atm nitrogen pressure and, increased at above this pressure until percent of addition percent reached 15 wt% and decreased abruptly upon futher increases in titanium hydride. In the synthesis of TiCxNy by combustion reaction, heat transfer from combustion zone to preheating zone and nitrogen gas penetration into the compact were found to be important factors affecting the TiCxNy formation. It was difficult to obtain high nitridation ratio when the conbustion temperature was either too high or too low, and it seems that the retention of high temperature after a combustion wave sweeped through the reactant mixture pellet is critical to obtain a satisfactory nitridation ratio.
High bum-up fuel technology has been developed through a national R&D program, which covers key technology areas such as claddings, $UO_2$ pellets, spacer grids, performance code, and fuel assembly tests. New cladding alloys were developed through alloy designs, tube fabrication, out-of-pile test and in-reactor test. The new Zr-Nb tubes are found to be much better in their corrosion resistance and creep strength than the Zircaloy-4 tube, owing to an optimized composition and heat treatment of the new Zr-Nb alloys. A new fabrication technology for large grain $UO_2$ pellets was developed using various uranium oxide seeds and a micro-doping of Al. The uranium oxide seeds, which were added to $UO_2$ powder, were prepared by oxidizing and heat-treating scrap $UO_2$ pellets. A $UO_2$ pellet containing tungsten channels was fabricated for a thermal conductivity enhancement. For the fuel performance analysis, new high burnup models were developed and implemented in a code. This code was verified by an international database and our own database. The developed spacer grid has two features of contoured contact spring and hybrid mixing vanes. Mechanical and hydraulic tests showed that the spacer grid is superior in its rodsupporting, wear resistance and CHF performance. Finally, fuel assembly test technology was also developed. Facilities for mechanical and thermal hydraulic tests were constructed and are now in operation. Several achievements are to be utilized soon by the Korea Nuclear Fuel and thereby contribute to the economy and safety of PWR fuel in Korea
A gap conductance is very important factor which can affect nuclear fuel temperature. Especially, in case of an annular fuel, a gap conductance effect can lead an unexpected heat split phenomena which is caused by a large difference of an inner and outer gap conductance. The gap conductance mechanism is very complicated behavior due to the its strong dependency on microscopic factors such as a contact surface roughness, local contact pressure and local temperature. In this paper, for the decision of test temperature and pressure range, a procedure and calculation results of in-reactor fuel temperature and pressure analysis are summarized which can be applied to test equipment design and determination of test matrix. Based upon analysis results, it is concluded that the minimum and maximum test temperature are $300^{\circ}C$ and $530^{\circ}C$ respectively, and the maximum pellet/cladding interfacial contact pressure should be observed up to 45MPa.
This paper experimentally examined the recycling of combustion by-products emitted from a combined heat and power plant using lignocellulosic biomass fuel. Physical and chemical analyzes were performed on Bio-SRF and three types of wood pellet combustion by-product samples (fly-ash, FA). As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength of mortar substituted with 5, 10, and 20% of FA compared to the cement weight was found to be excellent, and its recyclability was confirmed as a substitute for existing admixtures.
Thermal batteries are specialized as primary reserve batteries that operate when the internal heat source is ignited and the produced heat (450~550℃) melts the initially insulating salt into highly conductive eutectic electrolyte. The heat source is composed of Fe powder and KClO4 with different mass ratios and is inserted in-between the cells (stacks) to allow homogeneous heat transfer and ensure complete melting of the electrolyte. An ideal heat source has following criteria to satisfy: sufficient mechanical durability for stacking, appropriate heat calories, ease of combustion by an igniter, stable combustion rate, and modest peak temperature. To satisfy the aforementioned requirements, Fe powder must have high surface area and porosity to increase the reaction rate. Herein, the hydrothermal and spray drying synthesis techniques for Fe powder samples are employed to investigate the physicochemical properties of Fe powder samples and their applicability as a heat source constituent. The direct comparison with the state-of-the-art Fe powder is made to confirm the validity of synthesized products. Finally, the actual batteries were made with the synthesized iron powder samples to examine their performances during the battery operation.
The effect of high and low level of feed intakes on nutrient digestibility, nutrient losses through methane, energy and protein utilization by goats fed on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) pellets based diets was investigated in this study. Twelve castrated Japanese goats were employed in two subsequent digestion and metabolism trials. The goats were divided into three groups, offered three diets. Diet 1 consisted of 100% alfalfa pellet, Diet 2 was 70% alfalfa pellet and 30% corn, and Diet 3 was 40% alfalfa pellet and 60% corn. The two intake levels were high (1.6 times) and low (0.9 times) the maintenance requirement of total digestible nutrients (TON). Rumen ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) level of Diet 1 was lower (p<0.001) compared to Diets 2 and 3, but the values were always above the critical level (I50 mg/liter), The pH values of rumen liquor ranged from 6.02 to 7.30. Apparent digestibility of nutrient components did not show differences (p>0.05) between the two intake levels but inclusion of corn significantly altered the nutrient digestibility. Diet 3 had highest (p<0.001) dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE) and nitrogen fee extract (NFE) digestibility followed by the Diet 2 and Diet 1. The crude protein (CP) digestibility values among the three diets were in a narrow range (70.1 to 70.8%). Crude fiber (CF) digestibility for Diet 3 was slight higher (p>0.05) than that for other two diets. When alfalfa was replaced by corn, there were highly significant (p<0.001) increases in DM, OM, EE and NFE apparent digestibility and a slight increase in the CF digestibility (p>0.05). There were no differences (p>0.05) in energy losses as methane ($CH_4$) and heat production among the diets but energy loss through urine was higher for the Diet 1. The total energy loss as $CH_4$ and heat production were higher for the high intake level but the energy loss as $CH_4$ per gram DM intake were same (0.305 kcal/g) between the high and low intake level. Retained energy (RE) was higher for Diet 3 and Diet 2. Nitrogen (N) losses through feces and urine were higher (p<0.001) for Diet 1. Consequently, N retention was lower (p>0.05) for Diet 1 and higher in Diets 3 and 2. It is concluded that inclusion of corn with alfalfa increased the metabolizable energy (ME) and RE, and retained N through reducing the energy and N losses. The high level of intake reduced the rate of nutrient losses through feces and urine.
