  • This study deals with the use of the conjugate gradient method for the simultaneous estimation of two unknown boundary heat fluxes on the slab in reheating furnace. Temperature measurements by the experiment are used in the inverse analysis. The heat flux estimations for three different cases of measurement locations in the slab are performed: non-skid, skid, and shift-skid zones. The estimated heat fluxes for three cases indicated the three regions having local peak values of heat fluxes. The estimated temperatures at measurement locations were in good agreements with the measured temperatures within 5% relative error.

  • To investigate the convective heat transfer phenomena inside the Lox/Kerosene liquid rocket combustion chamber, hot fire tests were performed by using a water-cooled calorimetric chamber. The calorimetric chamber consists of one cylindrical section and nozzle section with independent cooling passage. To measure the heat flux, thermocouples were installed inlet and outlet of cooling passage of each section. The investigated range of combustion chamber pressure is from 100 psi to 300psi at fixed O/F ratio of 2.0 and radiation heat transfer from the hot gas to the surface is not considered. The measured heat flux was almost linearly depended on the chamber pressure.

  • Instantaneous temperature probes were manufactured by pressing method. By using these probes, the instantaneous surface temperature and unsteady heat flux in the cylinder liner of DOHC engine were measured. The main results are as follows; ⅰ) the instantaneous surface temperature of cylinder liner are affected by the contact of piston ring as well as burning gas. ⅱ) the wall temperature of the siamese portion is much higher than other parts. ⅲ) it was shown that the rising trend of heat flux by burning gas are nearly limited to the 1/2-stroke distance from the top of cylinder liner.

  • Surface energy and $CO_2$ fluxes have been measured over an ocean at Ieodo Ocean Research Station of KORDI since May 2003. Eddy covariance technique, which is a direct flux measurement, is used to quantitatively understand the interaction between the ocean surface and the atmospheric boundary layer. Although fluxes were continuously measured during the period from May 2003 to February 2004, the quality control of these data yielded <20% of data retrieval. The atmospheric stability did not show any distinct dirunal patterns and remained near-neutral to stable from May to June but mostly unstable during fall and winter in 2003. Sensible heat flux showed a good correlation with the difference between the sea water temperature and the air temperature. The maximum fluxes of sensible heat and latent heat were $120Wm^{-2}$ and $350Wm^{-2}$ respectively, with an averaged Bowen ratio of 0.2. The ocean around the tower absorbed $CO_2$ from the atmosphere and the uptake rates showed seasonal variations. Based our preliminary results, the daytime $CO_2$ flux was steady with an average of $-0.1 mgCO_2m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in summer and increased in winter. The nighttime $CO_2$ uptake was greater and fluctuating, reaching up to $-0.1 mgCO_2m^{-2}s^{-1}$ but these data require further examination due to weak turbulent mixing at nighttime. The magnitude of $CO_2$ flux was positively correlated with the half hourly changes in horizontal mean wind speed. Due to the paucity of quality data, further data collection is needed for more detailed analyses and interpretation.

  • Experiments were conducted to measure the heat flux and temperature over a protuberance, using an impulse hypersonic shock tunnel-coaxial thermocouples and a blowdown hypersonic wind tunnel-temperature sensitive paints(TSP). Experimental data were compared with the heat flux data using a blowdown hypersonic wind tunnel-heat flux gauges and it was confirmed data sets agreed well. The measured heat flux is large when the height of the protuberance is large. Also, the heat flux measurements at the upper positions are larger than at the lower positions. For high protuberances, a severe jump in the heat flux is observed, from about 0.6~0.7 of the height of the protuberances. However, when the protuberance is sufficiently short, a rise in the heat flux is rarely observed as the protuberance is submerged totally under the separation region.

  • An experimental study was carried out in a channel cavity with square heat surface by visual¬ization equipment with Mach - Zehnder interferometer and laser apparatus. The image processing system consists of one commercial image board slit into a personal computer and 2-dimensional sheet light by Argon-Ion Laser with cylindrical lens and flow picture recording system. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system which adopted two¬frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. Heat source was uniform heat flux(o.4W/cm$^2$, , O.8W/cm$^2$, 1.2W/cm$^2$). Obtained result showed various flow patterns such as kinetic energy distribution. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet flow is collided with the counter-clockwise rotating main primary vortex. Photographs of Mach ~ Zehnder are also compared in terms of constant heat flux.

  • Plate thermometers are used for measuring the radiative heat flux in high-temperature surroundings. The heat flux is calculated from the temperature measured at the back surface of the stainless steel surface of the meter. Heat fluxes from a Schmidt-Boelter gauge are measured as reference heat fluxes. A combined conductive coefficient is introduced to consider the heat loss to insulation, conduction through the stainless plate depth, and conduction from the non-uniform temperature of the plate of the plate thermometer. This coefficient is obtained using the repulsive particle swarm optimization.

  • Korean regional network of tower flux sites, KoFlux, has been initiated to better understand $CO_2$, water and energy exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere, and to contribute to regional, continental, and global observation networks such as FLUXNET and CEOP. Due to heterogeneous surface characteristics, most of KoFlux towers are located in non-ideal sites. In order to quantify carbon and energy exchange and to scale them up from plot scales to a region scale, applications of various methods combining measurement and modeling are needed. In an attempt to infer regional-scale flux, four methods (i.e., tower flux, convective boundary layer (CBL) budget method, MM5 mesoscale model, and NCAR/NCEP reanalysis data) were employed to estimate sensible heat flux representing different surface areas. Our preliminary results showed that (1) sensible heat flux from the tower in Haenam farmland revealed heterogeneous surface characteristics of the site; (2) sensible heat flux from CBL method was sensitive to the estimation of advection; and (3) MM5 mesoscale model produced regional fluxes that were comparable to tower fluxes. In view of the spatial heterogeneity of the site and inherent differences in spatial scale between the methods, however, the spatial representativeness of tower flux need to be quantified based on footprint climatology, geographic information system, and the patch scale analysis of satellite images of the study site.

  • In this research, we make the thin wall chamber to the measurement of heat flux of using a Kerosene/LOx liquid rocket engine's thrust chamber. The wall thickness is one millimeter. We measured outside wall temperature of thrust chamber by nine thermocouple. We suppose the system to the one-dimension unsteady state, and so the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient of thurst chamber are calculated using one-dimensional the transient energy equation by outside wall temperature. In this case, O/F ratio is 2.0, experimental variation is chamber pressure and we got the heat transfer coefficient of the proportion relation of 0.88 times for the chamber pressure.
