A rapid separation of Cs, Sr and Ba using gas pressurized extraction chromatography with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

  • We present a rapid method for the determination of Cs, Sr, and Ba, heat generators found in highly active liquid wastes, by gas-pressurized extraction chromatography (GPEC) using a column containing a cation-exchange resin. GPEC is a microscale column chromatographic technique that uses a constant flow rate of solvent (0.07 mL/min) with pressurized nitrogen gas supplied through a valve. In particular, because this method uses a small sample volume (a few hundred microliters), it produces less chemical waste and allows for faster separation compared to traditional column chromatography. In this study, we evaluated the separation of Cs, Sr, and Ba using GPEC. The eluate from the column (GPEC or conventional column chromatography) was quantitatively analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry to measure the column recovery and precision. The column reproducibility of the proposed GPEC system (RSDs of recoveries) ranged from 2.7 to 4.1 %, and the column recoveries for the three elements ranged from 72 to 98% when aqueous HCl was used as the eluent. The GPEC results are slightly different in efficiency and separation resolution compared to those of conventional column chromatography because of the differences in the eluent flow rate as well as the internal diameter and length of the column. However, the two methods had similar recoveries for Cs and Sr, and the precision of GPEC was improved by two-fold. Remarkably, the solvent volume required for GPEC analysis was five times lower than that of the conventional method, and the total analysis time was 11 times shorter.

  • Laser claddmg 1s thc deposition of material on the surface of a part or workpiece. Cladding of metals produces a 100% dense metallurgically-bonded coating with minimal dilution for enhanced corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance. Despite of minimal heat Input and reduced processing time, cladding quality 1s affected by various process condition such as laser power and feed rate. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the momtoring and control methods of laser cladding process for the best cladding quality. In this paper, laser cladding monitoring system using CCD camera for measuring cladding pool shape, and photo-diode sensor for detecting optical signal emitted from the cladding front is introduced The variables extracted using this system can be apphed to control the laser cladding system to achieve the best claddmg results..

지하수 부존지역에서 최적 지열에너지 활용방식 수치 모의 (Numerical Simulations for Optimal Utilization of Geothermal Energy under Groundwater-bearing Conditions)

  • 최근 지열에너지 활용 증가 추세와 더불어 지하수 부존량이 풍부한 지역에서 수직개방형의 효율이 더 높다는 연구결과가 제시됨에도 불구하고, 국내 지열냉난방시스템의 열교환 방식은 수직밀폐형 방식이 주를 이루고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 지하수 부존량이 풍부한 지역에서 수직개방형 방식의 효율성을 검증하기 위하여, 수리지질 및 열적 특성을 반영한 최적의 지열에너지 활용 방식을 수치 모의하였다. 1차 모의 결과, 지하수 부존량이 풍부한 지역에서 지열냉난방시스템을 활용하는 경우 수직밀폐형보다 지하수를 직접 이용하는 수직개방형이 더욱 효과적인 것으로 분석되었으며, 수직개방형 중에서는 SCW (standing column well)형 보다는 주입정과 추출정이 분리된 복수관정형에서 지반과 열교환을 통해 얻을 수 있는 주입수와 추출수의 온도차 (${\Delta}$)가 커 더욱 효율적인 것으로 나타났다. 2차 모의에서는 수직개방형 지열에너지 공급방식인 단일관정형, SCW형, 복수관정형을 대상으로 열 이송, 이격거리 및 유량, 지하수 수리경사 등을 고려한 최적의 활용 방식을 검토하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 지열냉난방시스템의 지중 열교환 방식 선정 시 활용할 수 있는 흐름도를 제시하였다. 본 연구결과 제시된 다양한 선정 기준을 기초로 실제 선정 시에는 전체 지열냉난방 시스템에 대한 COP (coefficient of performance) 계산 및 세부적인 타당성 검토가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Hypothermic Preconditioning Lowers the Incidence of Hypothermic Arrest in Neonatal Rat

  • This study was performed to examine 1) Whether hypothermic cardiac arrest produces myocardial HSP72 expression; 2) And if, whether it serves to protect the heart against the subsequent hypothermic arrest. In the present study, neonatal rats were placed in an icebath to induce hypothermia. To determine whether hypothermic cardiac arrest produces myocardial HSP72, experimental animals were subjected to 10-min hypothermic insult before the extraction of the heart. The intervals between the insult and extraction were 1 (1 HR), 4 (4 HR), 8 (8 HR), 24 (24 HR) or 72 (72HR) hours. A minimal amount of HSP72 was detected in control, 1 HR and 72 HR groups. In contrast, 8 HR and 24 HR groups showed a significant level of HSP72 expressions. To assess the cardioprotective effect of HSP72 against hypothermic cardiac arrest, we compared the proportion of recovery from the arrest between control and preconditioned (PREC) animals. Control animals were subjected to 20-min hypothermic insult, while PREC group was preconditioned by 10-min hypothermic insult 8 hours before the 20-min test hypothermic insult. Resuscitation rate from cardiac arrest induced by the 20-min hypothermic insult in PREC group was significantly higher than that in controls. These results suggest that the cardioprotective effect of hypothermic preconditioning is associated with an increase in HSP72 expression.

Stability of Soybean Isoflavone Isomers According to Extraction Conditions

  • Stability of soybean isoflavone isomers according to extraction conditions such as temperature, pH, and extracting solvents was investigated. Heating induced three chemical reactions to occur for malony1 derivatives of isoflavones, namely decarboxylation of malony1 groups into acety1 derivatives, deesterification of malony1 residues, and hydrolysis of $\beta$-glycosidic bonds. Among the twelve isoflavone isomers, change in concentrations of acety1glycosides were most pronounced: Acety1 derivatives were present only in trace amounts in unheated hypocotyls, but the content increased dramatically during heating. As for the glycosides, concentrations of daidzin and glycitin increased due to heat treatment, though that of genistin remained almost unchanged. Heat decomposition rates and the patterns differed among the three malony1 derivatives. After 120 min at $80^{circ}C$, the relative concentrations of daidzin, glycitin and genistin were increased from $9.2\%$, $12.4\%$ and $3.3\%$ to $19.3\%$, $21.9\%$ and $6.2\%$, respectively. When crude isoflavones were solubilized in glycine buffer (pH 10.0) and incubated at $80^{circ}C$, deesterification occurred faster than at pH 7.0. When the pH of isoflavone solution was increased, the malony1glycosides were hydrolyzed to their respective glycosides at increased rate. Both acetyl and aglycone forms were unchanged and only de-esterification reactions occurred. At the acidic pH, malonylglycosides were much stable both at 60 and $80^{circ}C$. However at pH 10, $80^{circ}C$ and 1 hr, $75-80\%$ of malonylglycosides were transformed to their deesterified glycosides. When isoflavones were extracted with $60\%$ aqueous ethanol at $60^{circ}C$, isoflavone isomers were stable and the deesterification reactions did not occur in these conditions. However, at $80^{circ}C$ deesterification of malonyiglycosides occurred significantly with $15-20\%$ of malonylglycosides being hydrolyzed into their respective glycosides. This experiment showed that malonylglycosides undergo decomposition when heated or exposed to alkaline conditions. Also, aqueous ethanol was preferred to aqueous methanol as solubilizing media for obtaining extract with minimum degradation of malonylglycosides.

압력용기용 강의 석출거동과 인장특성에 미치는 오스테나이트화 온도 및 냉각속도의 영향 (Effects of Austenitizing Temperature and Cooling Rate on Precipitation Behavior and Tensile Properties of Pressure Vessel Steels)

  • The effects of austenitizing temperature and cooling rate on precipitation behavior and tensile properties were investigated in an Mn-Mo-Nb-V pressure vessel steel. During austenitizing, it was shown that the austenite coarsening was somewhat suppressed by undissolved NbC. After cooling from austenitizing, the microstructure of all the steels mainly consisted of upper bainite. However, the steel comprised a little lower bainite and martensite in the case of aqua oil quenching from $1000^{\circ}C$, which would be due to increased hardenability by partly dissolved Nb and comparatively large austenite grains. The average size of NbC in austenite at higher temperature was analyzed to be smaller than that at lower temperature because of the more dissolution. It was found that the NbC did not grow much during fast cooling from austenitizing. Meanwhile, the NbC grew much during slow cooling, probably due to wide temperature range of cooling and sufficiently long time for NbC to grow. It was conjectured the V precipitates newly formed and/or grew during cooling from austenitizing and during tempering. On the other hand, the formation of NbC was almost completed before tempering and little more precipitated during tempering. Among the tempered steels, the steel which was fast cooled from $1000^{\circ}C$ showed the highest tensile strength, which seemed to come from the microstructure of fine upper bainite and some low temperature phases as well as the comparatively fine NbC precipitates.

Crack growth rate evaluation of alloys 690/152 by numerical simulation of extracted CT specimens

  • While nickel-based alloys have been widely used for power plants due to corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, during the last couple of decades, failures of nuclear components increased gradually. One of main degradation mechanisms was primary water stress corrosion cracking at dissimilar metal welds of piping and reactor head penetrations. In this context, precise estimation of welding effects became an important issue for ensuring reliability of them. The present study deals with a series of finite element analyses and crack growth rate evaluation of Alloys 690/152. Firstly, variation of residual stresses and equivalent plastic strains was simulated taking into account welding of a cylindrical block. Subsequently, extraction and pre-cracking of compact tension (CT) specimens were considered from different locations of the block. Finally, crack growth curves of the alloys and heat affected zone were developed based on analyses results combined with experimental data in references. Characteristics of crack growth behaviors were also discussed in relation to mechanical and fracture parameters.

울금의 가공적성 증진을 위한 Curcumin 추출 최적화 및 쓴맛 성분 완화 (Optimization of Curcumin Extraction and Removal of Bitter Substance from Curcuma longa L.)

  • 울금에 들어 있는 curcumin성분의 추출조건 확립 및 HPLC에 의한 최적 분석조건과 쓴맛성분 제거방법 등을 검토한 결과, 메탄올에서 흡수파장은 424 nm 부근에서 최대흡광도를 보였으며, HPLC의 최적 분석조건은 UV 424nm에서 Zorbax eclipse $C_{18}$ column을 사용하여 분석할 경우, 이동상은 75% MeOH, 유속 0.8 mL/min에서 가장 좋은 분리 결과를 보였다. Curcumin 성분은 메탄올추출물이 가장 높은 함유량을 보였으며, 모든 시료구에서 상온 추출보다는 가열 추출이 더 높은 함유량을 보였다. 또한 메탄올과 에탄올추출물의 curcumin 함량은 물 추출물에 비하여 상온에서 각각 14.8배, 14.2배 높았으며, 유기용매 가열추출은 2 가지 모두 상온보다 약 150 mg% 정도가 더 높게 나타났다. 또한 물과 메탄올추출물 모두 30분 이상에서는 크게 함량이 증가하지 않아 가열추출 시 60분 정도면 충분한 것으로 판단되었다. 가열처리에 따른 울금의 쓴맛성분의 변화는 물추출물의 경우는 $80^{\circ}C$ 이상의 처리구에서 쓴맛이 현저하게 감소되는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 $121^{\circ}C$ 처리구는 상온처리구 보다는 쓴맛이 약했으나 $100^{\circ}C$ 시료구보다 더 강한 쓴맛을 나타냈다. 에탄올의 경우는 상온과 $70^{\circ}C$ 두 시료구에서 차이를 보이지 않았다.

저온 열원으로부터 최대 동력을 생산하기 위한 유기랭킨사이클(ORC)에 관한 연구 (Study on Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for Maximum Power Extraction from Low-Temperature Energy Source)

  • ORC(organic Rankine cycle) has potential of reducing consumption of fossil fuels and has many favorable characteristics to exploit low-temperature heat sources. This work analyzes performance of ORC with superheating using low-temperature energy sources in the form of sensible energy. Maximum mass flow rate of a working fluid relative to that of a source fluid is considerd to extract maximum power from the sources. Working fluids of R134a, $iC_4H_{10}$ and $C_6C_6$, and source temperatures of $120^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ are considered in this work. Results show that for a fixed source temperature thermal efficiency increases with evaporating temperaure, however net work per unit mass of source fluid has a maximum with respect to the evaporating temperature in the range of low source temperature. Results also show that the maximum power extraction is possible with R134a for the source temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, with $iC_4H_{10}$ for $200^{\circ}C$, and with $C_6C_6$ for $300^{\circ}C$.

알로에 배라 점질물의 무기물 응집활성 (Flocculating Activity of the Mucilage Extracted from Aloe vera Linne)

  • For the purpose of screening the functionality in aloe, the mucilage from Aloe vera Linne was prepared by extraction of mucilaginous parenchyma with ethanol followed homogenation, filtration and centrifigation. Flocculability of this mucilage from Aloe vera L. was investigated and the identification fro flocculating active materials were carried out. The mucilage exhibited an excellent flocculability for 1% bentonite and 5,000 ppm kaolin suspensions. The good correlations between mucilage volume(concentration) and flocculability for 1% bentonite suspension were obtained. The flocculated volume or flocculation rate was affected depending upon the degrees of processing such as a heat treatment and purification. A major component showing the flocculaing activity was considered as a highly polymerized polysaccharide having flocculating activity was about 1,000,000 daltons.
