  • The effect of heat exchanger surface treatment on the frosting/defrosting behavior in a fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated experimentally. It is found that the hydrophilic surface mainly influences on the frosting behavior, however, the hydrophobic surface gives some influence on the defrosting behavior. In view of frosting performance, surface-treated heat exchanger with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic characteristic shows a little improvement in the thermal performance than the aluminium heat exchanger with no surface treatment. The result reveals that the heat exchanger with hydrophobic surface treatment is more effective in view of the defrosting efficiency and time. The amounts of residual water on the surface-treated heat exchangers are shown to be smaller than those of the bare heat exchanger, therefore further improvements on the performance of re-operations are expected.

  • The effect of various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the defrosting behavior of a fin-tube heat exchanger has been examined experimentally. An electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger. There are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by frosting density as well as frost accumulation, both of which vary with the experimental operating conditions. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.

  • We develop a heat exchanger modules for a multi-burner boiler. The heat exchanger module is kind of a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). This heat recovery system has 4 heat exchanger modules. The 1st module consists of 27 bare tubes due to high temperature exhaust gas and the others consist of 27 finned tubes. The maximum steam pressure of each module is 1 MPa and tested steam pressure is 0.7 MPa. In order to test these heat exchanger modules, we make a 0.5t/h flue tube boiler (LNG, $40\;Nm^3/h$). We tested the heat exchanger module with changing the position of each heat exchanger module. We measured the inlet and outlet temperature of each heat exchanger module and calculated the heat exchange rate. The results show that if module C is placed at second stage (the 1st stage is always module O, bare tube module), there is no need to attach an additional heat exchanger module. In this case the exit temperature of module C is low enough to enter an economizer which is more effective in heat recovery than a heat exchanger module.

  • In this study, the defrosting behaviors according to the surface characteristics in the fin-tube heat exchanger is experimentally examined. It is found that the draining rate of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are evenly dispersed during defrosting, compared with that of the bare one. It is caused by the high density frost for the hydrophilic heat exchanger, and surface characteristic for the hydrophobic heat exchanger, respectively. The rest period of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are shorter and their weight of residual water are smaller than those of the bare heat exchanger The hydrophilic and hydrophobic heat exchangers are more effective than the bare one in terms of defrosting efficiency, and the hydrophobic heat exchanger is better than the hydrophilic one.

  • In this study the seasonal performance of a residential air conditioning system having either a fin-and-tube condenser or a microchannel condenser is experimentally investigated. A commercially available 7 kW capacity residential air conditioning system having a fin-and-tube condenser served as the base system. The test results show that the system with a microchannel heat exchanger has a reduced refrigerant charge amount of 10%, the coefficient of performance is increased by 6% to 10%, and the SEER is increased by 7% as compared with those of the base system. Moreover, the condensing pressure of the system is decreased by 100 kPa and the pressure drop across the condenser is decreased by 84%. The microchannel heat exchanger enhances the SEER of the residential air conditioning system by providing better heat transfers at reduced pressure drops.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present failure analysis, of the heat exchanger tube in a district heating system. SS304 stainless steel is used, as material for the heat exchanger tube. The heat exchanger operates in a soft water environment containing a small amount of chloride ions, and regularly repeats operation and standstill period. This causes concentration of chloride ions on the outer surface of the tube, as well as repeat of thermal expansion, and shrinkage of the tube. As a result of microscopic examination, cracks showed transgranular as well as branched propagation, and many pits were present, at the initiation point of each crack. Energy disperstive spectroscopy analysis showed Fe and O peak, as well as Cl peak, meaning that cracks were affected by Cl ion. Failure of the tube was caused by chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking by thermal stress, high temperature, and localized enrichment of chloride ions.

  • The theoretical analysis of performance characteristics in a $CO_2$ cycle with the heat exchanger type was carried out. The size and performance of the fin-tube and microchannel heat exchanger were compared with operating conditions. As a result, the performance of the fin-tube gascooler and evaporator were more sensitive to the variation of operating condition compared to that of the microchannel gascooler and evaporator. Beside, the sizes of microchannel gascooler and evaporator could be decreased by 73% and 76%, respectively, compared to those of the fin-tube type gascooler and evaporator with the similar capacity. The COP and reliability of the $CO_2$ system can be increased by using a microchannel heat exchanger.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been employed for the Heat exchanger efficiency of a counter flow heat exchanger. The Heat exchanger efficiency has been assessed by considering the computed Nusselt number and flow friction characteristics in the double pipes heat exchanger equipped with two types twisted-tapes: (1) single clockwise direction and (2) alternate clockwise and counterclockwise direction. Cold and hot water are used as working fluids in shell and tube side, respectively. Hot and cold water inlet mass flow rates ranging are between 0.04 and 0.25 kg/s, and 0.166 kg/s, respectively. The inlet hot and cold water temperatures are 54 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results obtained from the tube with twisted-tapes insert are compared with plain tube. Nusselt number and friction factor obtained by CFD simulations were compared with correlations available in the literature. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the results reported in literature.

  • In this study, the effects of design factors of finned-tube heat exchanger, such as fin spacing and fin array on the frost growth and heat exchanger performance are investigated under a frosting condition. The results show that the amount of frost, frost density and blockage ratio of air flow passage increase with decreasing fin spacing. Heat transfer rate increases momentarily at the initial stage of frosting and then decreases. After that heat transfer rate continues to increase again to reach a maximum value and then decreases dramatically. It is shown that the time required for heat transfer rate to reach a maximum value becomes shorter with decreasing fin spacing, and after a maximum value, heat transfer rate decreases very fast. The maximum allowable blockage ratio is introduced to determine the operation limit of a finned-tube heat exchanger operating under frosting condition and is obtained as a function of fin spacing. It is also shown that heat transfer rate of heat exchanger with staggered fin array increases about 17% and the amount of pressure drop of air increases about 1~2 mmH$_{2}$O, compared with those of in-line type heat exchanger under frosting condition.

  • This study is performed to develop a tripple-tube exchanger which can improve the system efficiency. Three different tube diameters are compacted by one body(tripple-tube) to recover waste heat from heat exchanging among the fluids. With this, the tripple-tube shows higher cooling capacity than the double-tube after comparing between those two systems. The results of this study are basic data to design the optimum tripple-tube heat exchanger.
