The objectives of this paper are to measure the heat transfer and pressure drop of the plate heat exchangers for absorption system applications. Three types of plate heat exchangers with different chevron angles are tested in the present experiment. Heat transfer and pressure drop performance of plate heat exchangers are measured in various operating conditions, and compared each other. The results show that the heat transfer rate of high theta ($120^{\circ}$) and mixed theta plate heat exchanger increases about 118% and 98% at the solution flow rate 350 kg/h compared to that of low theta ($60^{\circ}$), respectively. The effectiveness of high theta was evaluated about $0.53{\sim}0.85$ in this experimental range. The experimental correlations of the Nu and f were developed with error bands of ${\pm}7%$ and ${\pm}12%$.
This paper presents a series of numerical simulations on the thermal performance and sectional efficiency of a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger (U-loop) equipped in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP). A 3-D finite volume analysis (Fluent) was used to simulate the operating process of the closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger by considering the effect of the thickness of HDPE pipe and grout thermal properties, distance between the inflow and outflow pipes, and the effectiveness of the latticed HDPE pipe system. It was observed that the thermal interference between the two strands of U-loop is of importance in determining the efficiency of the ground heat exchanger, and thus it is highly recommendable to modify the cross section configuration of the conventional U-loop system by including a thermally insulating latice between the two strands.

A heat exchanger analysis is performed to investigate the heating characteristics of cryogenic nitrogen by ambient air for the purpose of cryogenic automotive propulsion. The heat exchanger is a concentric triple-passage for supercritical nitrogen, and the radial fins are attached on the outermost tube for the crossflow of ambient air. The temperature distribution is calculated for the nitrogen along the passage, including the real gas properties of nitrogen, the fluid convections and the conductions through the tube walls and the fins. Since the wall temperature of the outer (ambient side) tube is very low in most cases, a heavy frost can be formed on the surface, affecting the heat exchange performance. By the method of the similarity between the heat and the mass transfer of moist air, the frost growth and the time-dependent effectiveness of the heat exchanger are calculated for various operating conditions. It is concluded that the frost formation can augment the heating of nitrogen during the initial period because of the latent heat, then gradually degrades the heat exchange because of the increased thermal resistance. Practical design issues are discussed for the flow rate of nitrogen, the velocity and humidity of ambient air, and the sizes of the fin.
Shape optimization of a Printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) has been performed by using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (3-D RANS) analysis and surrogate modeling techniques. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of effectiveness of the PCHE term and pressure drop in the cold channels of the PCHE. The cold channel angle and the ellipse aspect ratio of the cold channel are used as design variables for the optimization. Design points are selected through Latin-hypercube sampling. The optimal point is determined through surrogate-based optimization method which uses 3-D RANS analyses at design points. The results of three types of surrogate model are compared each other. The results of the optimizations indicate improved performance in friction loss but low performance in effectiveness than the reference shape.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of a transcritical cycle for hot water heating using $CO_2$ as a working fluid. Some of the main parameters that affect the practical performance of the $CO_2$ system are discussed; the performance on the variation of refrigerant charge, changes in flow conditions of secondary fluids, and that with or without internal heat exchanger, The experimental results show that the optimum charge is approximately the same for various mass flow rates of the secondary fluid at gas cooler. The experimental results on the effect of secondary fluids are in general agreement with the experimental results of transcritical cycle in the open literature and show similar trend for conventional subcritical vapor compression cycles. The heat exchanger effectiveness increases with an increase of the heat exchange area of the internal heat exchanger regardless of the mass flow rate at the gas cooler.
The principal intention of this experimental work is to confer upon the exergy study of GSHP associated with horizontal earth heat exchanger for space heating. The exergy analysis recognizes the assessment of the tendency of various energy flows and quantifies the extensive impression of inefficiencies in the system and its components. Consequently, this study intends to provide the enlightenment for well interpretation of exergy concept for GSHP. This GSHP system is composed of heat pump cycle, earth heat exchanger cycle and fan coil cycle. All the required data were measured and recorded when the experimental set up run at steady state and average of the measured data were used for exergy investigation purpose. In this study the rate at which exergy destructed at all the subsystems and system has been estimated using the analytical expression. The overall rational exergetic efficiency of the GSHP system was evaluated for estimating its effectiveness. Hence, we draw the exergy flow diagram by using the various calculated results. The result shows that in the whole system the maximum exergy destruction rate component was compressor and minimum exergy flow component was earth heat exchanger. Consequently, compressor and earth heat exchanger need to be pay more attention.
As the operating time of heat exchangers progresses, fouling caused by water-borne deposits and the number of plugged tubes increase and thermal performance decreases. Both fouling and tube plugging are known to interfere with normal flow characteristics and to reduce thermal efficiencies of heat exchangers. The heat exchangers of Korean nuclear power plants have been analyzed in terms of heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient as a means of heat exchanger management. Except for fouling resulting from the operation of heat exchangers, all the tubes of heat exchangers have been replaced when the number of plugged tubes exceeded the plugging criteria based on design performance sheet. This paper describes a plugging margin evaluation method taking into account the fouling of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. The method can evaluate thermal performance, estimate future fouling variation, and consider current fouling level in the calculation of plugging margin. To identify the effectiveness of the developed method, fouling and plugging margin evaluations were performed at a component cooling heat exchanger in a Korean nuclear power plant.

As operating time of heat exchangers progresses, fouling generated by water-borne deposits and the number of plugged tubes increase and thermal performance decreases. Both fouling and tube plugging are known to interfere with normal flow characteristics and to reduce thermal efficiencies of heat exchangers. The heat exchangers of domestic nuclear power plants have been analyzed in terms of the heat flux and heat transfer coefficient at test conditions as a means of heat exchanger management. Except for the fouling level generated in operation of heat exchangers, also, all of the tubes of heat exchangers have been replaced when the number of plugged tubes exceeds the plugging criteria based on design performance sheet. This paper describes the plugging margin evaluation mettled reflected the fouling of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, which can evaluate the thermal performance for heat exchangers, estimate the future fouling variations, and reflect the current fouling level. To identify the effectiveness of the developed method, the fouling and plugging margin evaluations were performed for a component cooling heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant.

This paper treats the temperature effectiveness of the two-fluid counterflow regenerator in a rotary type. To avoid continual interpolation and to obtain the simple result in calculating that, it obtained the particular solution for the direct-transfer-type counterflow heat exchanger by the graphical procedures. Also, it introduced the empirical formula for the influence of the ratio of rotor matrix to minimum working fluid heat capacity rate with the particular solution induced. Particularly, substituting the published results of temperature effectiveness into the program, it obtained the simple and convenient equation which can applicate in the counterflow regenerator in a rotary type. To compare and discuss the results induced, selecting the regenerative air preheater and applying the their running datum and specifications to the related results, it shows that the above results are agree with the published results within absolute relative error, 3.0%.
This paper presents the Coefficient of performance(COP) and mass flow ratio of cascade refrigeration system with respect to refrigerants appling to high temperature cycle. The operating parameters considered in this study include degree of superheating and subcooling, compressor efficiency, evaporating temperature, condensing temperature and internal heat exchanger effectiveness in high temperature cycle. The result of this study is as follows : The COP of cascade system increases with increasing degree of superheating and subcooling, compressor efficiency and internal heat exchanger effectiveness except increasing condensing temperature. The mass flow ratio of low and high temperature cycle increases with increasing evaporating temperature and condensing temperature, but decreases with increasing internal heat exchanger effectiveness, degree of superheating and subcooling. Also, the mass flow ratio has no correlation with compressor efficiency at high temperature cycle.
