Freeze drying under vacuum condition is a complex process that involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer, sublimation of ice, and motion of sublimation front. Proper treatment of the motion of sublimation interface is crucial for an accurate prediction of the freeze drying process. Based on the enthalpy formulation that has been successfully used in liquid/solid phase change problems. a fixed grid method. streamlined for the freeze drying analysis. was developed in this study. The accuracy of the fixed grid method was checked by solving a one-dimensional tray freeze drying and a two-dimensional vial freeze drying problem and then comparing the results with those by the moving grid method. Finally. the freeze drying characteristics of two-dimensional slab and axis-symmetric cylinder was investigated using the fixed grid method.

A mathematical model of freeze drying by sublimation was suggested and used to estimate the drying time. Under the various conditions, the drying time of pure water and carrot was numerically calculated for the suggested model. Optimal policies of freeze drying were investigated experimentally in a laboratory freeze dryer. It was found that the shortest drying times could be obtained when the chamber pressure and condenser temperature were kept at their lowest values and the best method of heat transfer for sublimation was the conduction involving radiation. The sublimation drying period was finished when the bottom temperature of material could be reached at near $0^{\circ}C$ from frozen temperature.
The characteristics of heat energy distribution on the fire-proof clay with microwave heating drying are numerically investigated using finite element method. The modelled regular hexahedron chamber$(50cm\times50cm\times50cm)$ filled with air consists of vertical heat source and sink walls, a fire-proof clay model, and adiabatic plates on the top and bottom walls. With different geometrical aspect ratios of the fire-proof clay model, the heat energy distribution is throughly investigated. The model gave a good prediction of the microwave heating characteristics of fire-proof clay. The optimal shape of the fire-proof clay for given chamber geometry and microwave power is analyzed.

The drying of duck blood provides safety and commercial benefits, but each drying method has its own characteristics. Moreover, information on the effects of diverse drying methods on the quality of duck blood is limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various drying methods on the chemical and functional properties of duck blood. The physicochemical characteristics and functional properties of duck blood subjected to spray drying (SD), freeze drying (FD), vacuum drying (VD), and hot air drying (HD) were examined. The carbonyl content of FD duck blood powder was the lowest and the thermal stability was higher than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). The gel obtained from spray-dried blood displayed the lowest malondialdehyde content. The hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were the highest in the heat-induced gel prepared from FD duck blood powder (p<0.05). The gel obtained from FD duck blood displayed a denser structure than the other gel samples. Taken together, the FD duck blood exhibited excellent chemical properties and processing suitability.

This paper presents an experimental study to ivestigate mechanical property of concretes according to addition of urea and urea-water soluble sulfur contents. Urea was added at 5~20% replacement by weight of water, and water soluble sulfur was used at 2%, 4% replacement by weight of cement. The setting times, the hydration heat, the compressive strength, and the drying shrinkage, were measured on concretes with single and binary admixtures. From the test result, it was confirmed that the hydration heat of urea-water soluble sulfur was lower than that of normal concrete by $10.1^{\circ}C$, and the drying shrinkage of urea-water soluble sulfur concrete was more excellent than normal concrete. In the case of urea of 5%, Compressive strength were improved with an increase of water soluble sulfur contents. The urea-water soluble sulfur used in this research can be used as improvement materials for drying shrinkage and compressive strength.
The objective of this study is to develop a belt-type dryer with a capacity of 1 ton/day, thereby improving drying efficiency by more than 70% and reducing the size of dryers by more than 50%, and thus making dryers smaller and lighter to reduce the installation and operation costs by more than 20%. We identified structural improvements by analyzing existing dryers employing indirect heating and verified the superior drying performance of the proposed method through some basic experiments. Furthermore, we verified the improvements in the heat transfer and drying characteristics as we conducted the experiments at reduced pressure.

Drying process is involved in the production of various products including food, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, and batteries. Phase change of liquid to vapor generally requires enormous thermal energy, so in order to save energy, it is advantageous to develop an appropriate drier and use it under appropriate operating conditions, depending on the characteristics of materials. However, due to the complex, multiscale heat and mass transfer occurring during drying processes, predictions of appropriate drying conditions before actual operation are not easily achieved, leading to challenges in designing driers. Here, we developed a lab-scale experimental setup to evaluate the performance of band dries. The experimental setup was used to measure the moisture content and temperature change in the materials being dried in a belt dryer. Experimental results obtained using our lab-scale setup allow us to predict the performance of a full-scale band drier, thus suggesting a practical framework for predicting the drying process of various materials and developing band driers.
Low-temperature drying systems have been extensively used for drying cereal grain such as shelled corn and wheat. Since the 1973 energy crisis, many researches have been conducted to apply solar energy as supplemental heat to natural air drying systems. However, little research on rough rice drying has been done in this area, especially very little in Korea. In designing a solar drying system, quality loss, airflow requirements, temperature rise of drying air, fan power and energy requirements should be throughly studied. The factors affecting solar drying systems are airflow rate, initial moisture content, the amount of heat added to drying air, fan operation method and the weather conditions. The major objectives of this study were to analyze the effects of the performance factors and determine design parameters such as airflow requirements, optimum bed depth, optimum temperature rise of drying air, fan operation method and collector size. Three hourly observations based on the 4-year weather data in Chuncheon area were used to simulate rough rice drying. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The results of the statistical analysis indicated that the experimental and predicted values of the temperature rise of the air passing through the collector agreed well. 2. Equilibrium moisture content was affected a little by airflow rate, but affected mainly by the amount of heat added, to drying air. Equilibrium moisture content ranged from 12.2 to 13.2 percent wet basis for the continuous fan operation, from 10.4 to 11.7 percent wet basis for the intermittent fan operation respectively, in range of 1. 6 to 5. 9 degrees Centigrade average temperature rise of drying air. 3. Average moisture content when top layer was dried to 15 percent wet basis ranged from 13.1 to 13.9 percent wet basis for the continuous fan operation, from 11.9 to 13.4 percent wet basis for the intermittent fan operation respectively, in the range of 1.6 to 5.9 degrees Centigrade average temperature rise of drying air and 18 to 24 percent wet basis initial moisture content. The results indicated that grain was overdried with the intermittent fan operation in any range of temperature rise of drying air. Therefore, the continuous fan operation is usually more effective than the intermittent fan operation considering the overdrying. 4. For the continuous fan operation, the average temperature rise of drying air may be limited to 2.2 to 3. 3 degrees Centigrade considering safe storage moisture level of 13.5 to 14 perceut wet basis. 5. Required drying time decrease ranged from 40 to 50 percent each time the airflow rate was doubled and from 3.9 to 4.3 percent approximately for each one degrees Centigrade in average temperature rise of drying air regardless of the fan operation methods. Therefore, the average temperature rise of drying air had a little effect on required drying time. 6. Required drying time increase ranged from 18 to 30 percent approximately for each 2 percent increase in initial moisture content regardless of the fan operation methods, in the range of 18 to 24 percent moisture. 7. The intermittent fan operation showed about 36 to 42 percent decrease in required drying time as compared with the continuous fan operation. 8. Drymatter loss decrease ranged from 34 to 46 percent each time the airflow rate was doubled and from 2 to 3 percent approximately for each one degrees Centigrade in average temperature rise of drying air, regardless of the fan operation methods. Therefore, the average temperature rise of drying air had a little effect on drymatter loss. 9. Drymatter loss increase ranged from 50 to 78 percent approximately for each 2 percent increase in initial moisture content, in the range of 18 to 24 percent moisture. 10. The intermittent fan operation: showed about 40 to 50 percent increase in drymatter loss as compared with the continuous fan operation and the increasing rate was higher at high level of initial moisture and average temperature rise. 11. Year-to-year weather conditions had a little effect on required drying time and drymatter loss. 12. The equations for estimating time required to dry top layer to 16 and 1536 wet basis and drymatter loss were derived as functions of the performance factors. by the least square method. 13. Minimum airflow rates based on 0.5 percent drymatter loss were estimated. Minimum airflow rates for the intermittent fan operation were approximately 1.5 to 1.8 times as much as compared with the continuous fan operation, but a few differences among year-to-year. 14. Required fan horsepower and energy for the intermittent fan operation were 3. 7 and 1. 5 times respectively as much as compared with the continuous fan operation. 15. The continuous fan operation may be more effective than the intermittent fan operation considering overdrying, fan horsepower requirements, and energy use. 16. A method for estimating the required collection area of flat-plate solar collector using average temperature rise and airflow rate was presented.

In this study, characteristics of microwave and convective drying are studied by using a multiphase porous media model. Temperature and moisture profiles for hot-air convective heating and microwave heating of 1-D porous media with varying time and space are numerically investigated. This result shows the microwave drying method is more effective than the convective drying method. Comparing to convective drying, microwave drying can increase temperature and evaporation rate significantly since microwave generates internal heat and increases internal pressure, which results in moisture movement toward the surface on which moisture is vaporized.
