This study is concerned with a correlation of microstructure and local brittle zone (LBZ) in offshore structural steel welds. The influence of the LBZ on fracture toughness was investigated by means of simulated heat-affected zone (HAZ) tests as well as welded joint tests. Micromechanical processes involved in void and cleavage microcrack formation were also identified using notched round tensile tests and subsequent SEM observations. The LBZ in the HAZ of a multiphase welded joint is the interstitially reheated coarse grained HAZ, which is influenced by metallurgical factors such as effective grain size, the major matrix structure and the amount of high-carbon martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents. The experimental results indicate that Chirpy energy was found to scale monotonically with the amount of M-A constituents, confirming that the M-A constituent is the major microstructural factor controlling the HAZ toughness. In addition, voids and microcracks are observed to initiate at M-A constituents by the shear cracking process. Thus, the M-A constituent played an important role in initiating the voids and microcracks, and consequently caused brittle fracture.
The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of fire resistance steel for frame structure and heat affected zone (HAZ) by the one side Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated with the compact tension specimen of base metal and the HAZ according to chemical composition and rolling end temperature, respectively. And the acoustic emission signals obtained from the fatigue test were analyzed by the time-frequency analysis method as a nondestructive evaluation. Main results obtained are summarized as follows; The hardness was appeared softening phenomenon that weld metal and HAZ are lower than that of base metal. Fatigue life of welded specimen was longer than that of base metal. m was 3~4.5 in base metal and 3.8~5.8 in HAZ. The main frequency range of acoustic emission signal analyzed from time-frequency method is different with the range by noise and crack. Also, it could be classified that it was also generated by fracture mechanics of dimple, inclusion etc.
A study was made to characterize the microstructures and mechanical properties of the base metal and the heat-affected zone(HAZ) in Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulated the weld HAZ. The relationship between microstructure and toughness of HAZ was studied by impact test, O. M, SEM, TEM, and DSC. The toughness requirement of military specification value was met in all test temperatures for the base metal. The decrease of HAZ toughness comparing to base plate is ascribed to the coarsed-grain and the formation of bainite. Obliquely sectioned Charpy specimens show that secondary crack propagate easily along bainite lath. Improved toughness(240J) at HAZ of $Tp_2=950^{\circ}C$ is due to the fine grain, and reasonable toughness(160~00J) in the intercritical reheated HZA is achieved by the addition of small amount of carbon which affects the formation of "M-A". Cu precipitated during ageing for increasing the strength of base metal is dissolved during single thermal cycle to $1,350^{\circ}C$ and is precipitated little on cooling and heating during subsequent weld thermal cycle. Thus, the decrease of toughness does not occur owing to the precipitation of Cu.
Creep-fatigue crack growth behavior at the heat affected zone of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel weldment has been experimentally studied. Load hold times of the tests for trapezoidal fatigue waveshapes were varied among 0, 30, 300 and 3,600 seconds. Time-dependent crack growth rates were characterized by the {TEX}$C_{t}${/TEX} estimated with the equation proposed by the previous finite element analysis work. It was concluded that the {TEX}$C_{t}${/TEX} values calculated from the properties of parent metal were quite comparable to the accurate {TEX}$C_{t}${/TEX} values calculated from both of weld and parent metals. Scatter of data was claimed due to the difference of exact location of the cracks in HAZ. The cracks have a tendency to change their path from the original location eventually to the relatively soft HAZ(ie, near-FGHAZ region, fine grained heat affected zone).
In order to study on the corrosion characteristics of STS 304 pipeline steel weldment for gas cooling & heating system. the electrochemical polarization test and corrosion test by impressed potential in 0.5M $H_2SO_4+0.01M$ KSCN solution was carried out. Also, SEM and hardness of welding zone was measured. And then passive behavior, corrosion behavior by the impressed potential and SEM aspect and hardness behavior of base metal(BM) and heat affected zone(HAZ) for STS 304 pipe were investigated. The main results are as follows: 1) The critical anodic current density of heat affected zone(HAZ) is drained more highly than that of base metal(BM), and primary passive potential of HAZ become higher than that of BM. 2) The passive current density of TUE is drained more highly than that of BM, and passive region of BM become bigger than that of HAZ. 3) By the impressed potential, the current density of HAZ is drained more than that of BM.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the statistical properties of Vickers hardness (HV) for friction welded parts in a Ni-based super alloy (Alloy718). In the case of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) parts, hardness tests were repeated for three different applied loads, 100, 200, and 300 g, with a duration time of 10 seconds. The arithmetic means of the Vickers hardness in heat affected zone (HAZ) materials were smaller than those of the base metal (BM) in all of the applied loads. The coefficient of variation (COV) for the BM and HAZ decreased by increasing the applied load. The probability distribution of the Vickers hardness followed the Weibull distribution well. The distribution of the Vickers hardness was not found to be symmetric. The shape parameter and scale parameter increased by increasing the applied load at both the BM and HAZ.
The use of high-strength aluminum alloys for ship and offshore structure generally has many benefits compared to the structural steels. These materials are used widely in a variety of fields, especially in the hull and deck of high speed craft, box-girder of bridges, deck and side plates of offshore structure. The structural weight can be reduced using these aluminum structure, which can enable high speed The characteristics of stress-strain relationship of aluminum structure are fairly different from the steel one, because of the influence of Heat Affected Zone(HAZ) by the welding processing. The HAZ of aluminum is much wider than that of steel with its high heat conductivity. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of aluminum stiffened panel subjected to axial loading, such as the relationship between extent of HAZ and the behavior of buckling/ultimate strength, are investigated through the Finite Element Analysis with varying its range.
In The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the general yield brittle fractures were observed in beam-column connections of steel building frames. Among many influencing factors which affect the general yield brittle fracture, it can be considered that fracture toughness has substantial effects. Some studies are making clear the required toughness for the base metal and the weld metal, but general values are not proposed. Moreover, it seems that it is also important to pay attention to the toughness decrease in the weld heat affected zone (weld HAZ), because the toughness decrease occurs in the HAZs of mild steel. In this paper, the relationship between toughness of simulated HAZs of "the rolled steels for building structures (SN)" and the weld heat-input limit of the SN steel are investigated, in an attempt to provide the required toughness for HAZs. The relationships between the increase of the hardness value and toughness, and changes of microstructure after weld heat-input are also discussed. The main results are summarized as follows. 1) The SN400B can keep its toughness at higher heat-inputs compare to the SN490Bs. 2) The steel grade, which becomes harder than other steel grades at the same heat-input, has smaller absorbed energy and smaller limit of heat-input. 3) The weld heat-input limit of the SN400B and the SN490B are proposed separately for some required toughness values.

The use of high-strength aluminum alloys for ships and of shore structures has many benefits compared to carbon steels. Recently, high-strength aluminum alloys have been widely used in onshore and of shore industries, and they are widely used for the side shell structures of special-purpose ships. Their use in box girders of bridge structures and in the topside of fixed platforms is also becoming more widespread. Use of aluminum material can reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the composite material through a weight composition ratio of 1/3 compared to carbon steel. The characteristics of the stress strain relationship of an aluminum structure are quite different from those of a steel structure, because of the influence of the welding[process heat affected zone (HAZ). The HAZ of aluminum is much wider than that of steel owing to its higher heat conductivity. In this study, by considering the HAZ generated by metal insert gas (MIG) welding, the buckling and final strength characteristics of an aluminum reinforcing plate against longitudinal compression loads were analyzed. MIG welding reduces both the buckling and ultimate strength, and the energy dissipation rate after initial yielding is high in the range of the HAZ being 15 mm, and then the difference is small when HAZ being 25 mm or more. Therefore, it is important to review and analyze the influence of the HAZ to estimate the structural behavior of the stiffened plate to which the aluminum alloy material is applied.

Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) of weldment of the low alloy Cr-Mo steel, in general, is carried out not only to remove residual stress and hydrogen existing in weldment but to improve fracture toughness of weld heat affected zone (HAZ). There occur some problems such as toughness decrement and stress relief cracking (SRC) in the coarse grained region of weld HAZ when PWHT is practiced. Especially, embrittlement of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface such as grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of heating rate on PWHT embrittlement under the various kinds of stresses simulated residual stress in weld HAZ was evaluated by COD fracture toughness test and observation of fracture surface. Fracture toughness of weld HAZ decreased with increment of heating rate under no stress, but it was improved to increment of heating rate under the stress. Grain boundary failure didn't almost appear at the heating rate of 600.deg.C/hr but it appeared from being the applied stress of 294 MPa at 220.deg.C/hr and 196 MPa at 60.deg.C/hr.
