Missile operating at supersonic conditions experiences considerable high temperature environments that is caused by aerodynamic heating as a result of the temperature gradient through boundary layer that surrounds it. This is one of important problems to the designer due to temperature limitation of structural materials. Because prediction of aerodynamic heating on missile needs unsteady calculation according to a flight trajectory, approximate method approach is efficient at design stage. In this paper, improved aerodynamic heating analysis scheme is introduced, which calculates heat flow and temperature by simple pressure field prediction on a missile body and fin. The prediction results are compared with measured data and MINIVER codes results.

Inherent strain method for analyzing deformation of line-heating is substituting experiments of high cost, because of its high accuracy and quickness. Nowadays, the progressing forms of line-heating are not straight moving motions used to traditional studies, but weaving motions which can diversely input heat source. In shipyard, reasons of weaving motions are induction of a special characteristic by water cooling, maximum temperature limitation for keeping plates from melting, and rhythm for workman's maintaining velocity. On this study, a method which can obtain optimal weaving heating condition was presented, some examples were introduced, and the results corresponded to works of shipyard. Lastly, what the specifications of plates on efficiency are is presented, through the quality standard of shipyard and FEM heat transfer simulation. The ultimate purpose of line heating is the automation, so in case of plates which need weaving heating, the optimal heating condition suggested by this study can be used well in designing coil specifications of induction heaters which are heat input sources of new generation.

Even asbestos-containing waste (ACW) are highly harmful to humans, it continues being produced due to the massive disposal of asbestos-containing products. A development of asbestos detoxification and recycling technologies is required. Heat treatment using microwave is the most efficient method for ACW detoxification. However, microwave heat treatment method has the limitation that asbestos does not absorb microwave at room temperature. That is why, in this study, ACW was detoxified by microwave heat treatment adding the ACW between SiC plates, which are inorganic heating elements that absorb microwaves at room temperature. In order to improove the heat transfer, ACW was crushed and pulverized and then heated using microwave. Microwave heat treatment temperature and time variables were adjusted to investigate the detoxification properties according to heat treatment conditions. After heat treatment, treated ACW was analyzed for detoxification properties through crystal structure and microstructure analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microwave heat treatment method using SiC plate can be heated up to the target temperature within a short time. Finally, complete asbestos detoxification was confirmed from the crystal structure and the microstructure when the microwave heat treatment was performed at 1,200℃ for at over 60 minutes and at 1,300℃ for at over 10 minutes.
To understand a two-phase flow, a liquid film thickness is one of the important factors. A lot of researches have been performed to measure liquid film thickness with various approaches. Recently, an electrical conductance method which uses the conductivity of the liquid film has been widely applied on measuring the liquid film thickness. Though the electrical method has an advantage in high spatial resolution, as the conductivity of liquid can be affected by its temperature variation, the conventional electrical conductance methods have a limitation in being applied on varying temperature conditions where a heat transfer is involved. The purpose of this study is to develop a three-ring liquid film sensor that overcomes the limitation of the conventional method. The three-ring conductance method can measure the film thickness regardless of temperature variation by compensating the change of liquid conductivity. Considering its application on a wide range of conditions such as high temperature or curved surfaces, the sensor was fabricated on flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) in this study. This paper presents the concept of the measurement method, design procedure, prototype sensor fabrication and calibration results.

There are lots of industrial machines of which functions are achieved by operation of multi-phase fluids. Some of them take advantage of the characteristics of counter-current two-phase flow The maximum flow rates of gas and liquid phases which flow in opposite-directions (counter-current flow) are limited by a phenomenon known as a Counter-Current Flow Limitation (CCFL or Flooding) The mass and momentum conservation equations for each Phase were established to build a first-order hyperbolic partial derivative equations system. A new CCFL model is developed based on the characteristic equation of the hyperbolic PDE system. The present model has its applicationto the case in which a non-uniform flow is developed around a square or sharp-edged entrance of liquid phase. The model is able to he used to Predict the operating-limit of components in which mass and heat transfer are taking place between liquid and gas phases.

Wrinkling is a common phenomenon in nature and the shape of a wrinkle can be defined using characteristic dimensions such as pitch, length, amplitude, and density etc. Wrinkle structure can be utilized in various research fields, and especially it has special characteristics when it used in applications of heat transfer; a wrinkly surface has the effect to promote turbulent flow and increasing surface area. However, the generation of wrinkle structures in somewhat regular is not easy. Till now, there are some research works focused on realization of wrinkles in micro scale. However, most of the processes generally requires high precision equipments and high costs, and also there is a limitation to generate the wrinkles in a large area. In this study, we propose a novel method named as a RCO (repetitive contact-and-open) process to fabricate wrinkle structure with low cost and relative easy way. Using the RCO, we fabricated micro-corrugate structures successfully. From the experimental results, we found out the process parameters of RCO, and showed the possibility of RCO to be used in real applications.
Thermographic phosphor (TP) thermometry is a noncontact optical measurement method and has been applied in many fields such as combustion and heat transfer. However, due to the limitation of bonding technology and measurement method, most TP thermometry studies were conducted only on the air environment with water-soluble binders. In this paper, a temperature measurement technology in water using TP is proposed by coatings of manganese activated magnesium fluorogermanate (Mg4FGeO6:Mn4+, MFG) with Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Four MFG-PDMS coatings with different thicknesses were prepared. The lifetime of MFG was not affected by the thickness of the coating as a result of the experiment and analysis of phosphor intensity using a photomultiplier tube. To measure the surface temperature field of an immerged body in water, a cylinder-type cartridge heater was coated with MFG doped PDMS. Transient surface temperature field was successfully measured even the initial temperature is higher than the boiling point of water.

Lubricant-impregnated nanoporous surfaces (LIS), which is created by impregnating water-immiscible oil into nanoporous surface structure, have been explored considering wide range of application fields. Due to the lubricant impregnated in nanoporous structure, the surface shows extreme de-wetting with a high mobility of water droplets, so that various functionalities can be realized. The lubricant layer inhibits the contact of corrosive media to porous structure as well as metal substrate, thus the surface improves the corrosion resistance. The water on the surface freeze without any contact to solid porous structure, showing a low ice adhesion for de-icing an anti-icing. The extremely high mobility of water droplets on lubricant-impregnated porous surfaces also contributes the enhancement of condensation heat transfer as well as water harvesting from fog and moisture. Moreover, the bacteria adhesion on metal surface forming biofilms causing serious hygiene issues can be inhibited on the lubricantimpregnated surfaces. Despite of such superior functionalities, the lubricant-impregnated porous surface has a limitation of lubricant depletion by external flow of fluids. Therefore, extensive efforts to improve the durability of lubricant-impregnated surface are required for practical applications.
A hopping robot can move through a confined environment while overcoming obstacles. To create a small hopping robot, it must be able to generate a large amount of energy and release it at the same time. However, due to the small size of the robot, there is a limit to the size of the actuator that can be used, so it is mainly used to collect energy in an elastic element and release it at once. In this paper, we propose a small hopping robot with a simplified design by removing ancillary parts and enabling continuous hopping using only a small actuator based on a direct-drive method. In addition, repeated actuation over the rated voltage can cause thermal breakdown of the actuator. To check the safety of the actuator at high voltage, we perform modeling to predict the temperature of the actuator and verify the accuracy of the modeling through experiments.

The 18650 battery cell is known to be reliable and cost effective, but it has a design limitation and low electric capacity compared to pouch-type cells. Because its economy is superior, an 18650-cell-type battery pack is chosen. A reliable temperature is very important in automobile battery packs. Therefore, in this study, the temperature stability of the battery pack is predicted using CFD simulation. Following 3C discharge tests, the results for the heat generation of the battery cell are compared to the simulation results. Based on these results, a natural convection condition, forced convection condition, direct cell-cooling condition, cooling condition on the upper and lower surfaces of the battery pack, and cooling condition using air channels are all simulated. The results indicate that the efficiency and the performance of the air-channel-type cooling system is good.
