Miniature heat pipe(MHP) with woven-wired wick was used to cool the CPU of a notebook PC. The pipe with circular cross-section was pressed and bent for packaging the MHP into a notebook PC with very limited compact packaging space. A cross-sectional area of the pipe is reduced about 30% as the MHP with 4mm diameter is pressed to 2mm thickness. In the present study a performance test has been performed in order to review varying of operating performance according to pressed thickness variation and heat dissipation capacity of MHP cooling module that is packaged on a notebook PC. New wick type was considered for overcoming low heat transfer limit when MHP is pressed to thin-plate. The limiting thickness or pressing is shown to be within the range of 2mm∼2.5mm through the performance test with varying the pressing thickness. When the wall thickness of 0.4mm is reduced to 0.25mm for minimizing conductive thermal resistance through the wall of heat pipe, heat transfer limit and thermal resistance of MHP were improved about 10%. In the meantime, it is shown that the thermal resistance and heat transfer limit for the MHP with central wick type are higher than those of MHP with existing wick types. The results of performance test for MHP cooling modules with woven-wired wick to cool a notebook PC shows the stability as cooling system since T(sub)j(Temperature of Processor Junction) satisfy a demand condition of 0∼100$\^{C}$ under 11.5W of CPU heat.

In this study, the failure in circular cup deep drawing simulation at warm temperature is predicted using forming limit diagram (FLD). The FLD is used in sheet metal forming analysis to determine the criterion for fracture prediction. The simulation with heat transfer of circular cup deep drawing at warm temperature was conducted. To predict the failure, the simulation with heat transfer used FLD at temperature in the vicinity of maximum thinning. The result of the simulation with heat transfer shows that the drawn depth increases with increasing temperature and is in accord with the experimental results above $150^{\circ}C$. The FLD provides a good guide for the failure prediction of warm forming simulation with heat transfer.
Increasing proliferation resistance of plutonium by way of increased $^{238}Pu$ content is of interest to the nuclear nonproliferation and international safeguards community. Considering the high alpha decay heat of $^{238}Pu$, increasing the isotopic fraction leads to a noticeably higher amount of heat generation within the plutonium. High heat generation is especially unattractive in the scenario of weaponization. Upon weaponization of the plutonium, the plutonium may generate enough heat to elevate the temperature in the high explosives to above its self-explosion temperature, rendering the weapon useless. In addition, elevated temperatures will cause thermal expansion in the components of a nuclear explosive device that may produce thermal stresses high enough to produce failure in the materials, reducing the effectiveness of the weapon. Understanding the technical limit of $^{238}Pu$ required to reduce the possibility of weaponization is key to reducing the current limit on safeguarded plutonium (greater than 80 at. % $^{238}Pu$). The plutonium vector evaluated in this study was found by simulating public information on Lightbridge's fuel design for pressurized water reactors. This study explores the temperature profile and maximum stress within a simple (first generation design) hypothetical nuclear explosive device of four unique scenarios over time. Analyzing the transient development of both the temperature profile and maximum stress not only establishes a technical limit on the $^{238}Pu$ content, but also establishes a time limit for which each scenario would be useable.
In this study, a forming magnesium alloy circular cup was simulated accounting for heat transfer at elevated temperatures. In order to predict the failure of magnesium alloy sheet during simulation, the forming limit diagram, which is used in sheet metal forming analysis to determine the criterion for failure, was investigated. For the failure prediction in the simulation accounting for heat transfer, the forming limit diagram for a temperature the same as the temperature of the blank element was used. The result of the simulation showed that the drawn depth increases with the increase of the die-holder temperature, and is in accord with the experimental results above the die-holder temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. The forming limit diagram provided a good guide for the failure prediction of warm forming simulation accounting for heat transfer. In addition, the effect of the tool shoulder radius on the drawn depth at various tool temperatures is verified using the simulation conditions which agreed with the experimental results.
In a conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing up and down in a shell, therefore there is a defect in the heat transfer with tubes due to the stagnation portions . Fins are attached to the tubes in order to increase heat transfer efficiency, but there exists a limit. Therefore, it is necessary to improve heat exchanger performance by changing the fluid flow in the shell. In this study, a highly efficient shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is simulated three-dimensionally using a commercial thermal-fluid analysis code, CFX4.2. In this type of heat exchanger, fluid contacts with tubes flowing rotationally in the shell. It could improve heat exchanger performance considerably because stagnation portions in the shell could be removed. It is proved that the shell-and-tube heat exchanger with spiral baffle plates is superior to the conventional heat exchanger in terms of heat transfer.
Critical heat flux refers to the sudden decrease in boiling heat transfer coefficient between a heated surface and fluid, which occurs when the phase of the fluid near the heated surface changes from liquid to vapor. For this reason, critical heat flux is an important factor for determining the maximum limit and safety of a boiling heat transfer. Recently, it is reported that the nanofluid is used as a working fluid for the critical heat flux enhancement. However, it could be occurred nano-flouling phenomena on the heat transfer surface due to nanoparticles deposition, when the nanofluid is applied in a heat transfer system. In this study, we experimentally carried out the effects of the nano-fouling phenomena in oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube and oxidized graphene nanofluid systems. It was found that the boiling heat flux decreased by hourly 0.04 and $0.03kW/m^2$, also the boiling heat transfer coefficient decreased by hourly 11.56 and $10.72W/m^2{\cdot}K$, respectively, in the thermal fluid system using oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube or oxidized graphene nanofluid.
Nucleate boiling heat transfer for refrigerants, R113, and R113+wt4% ethanol mixture, an azeotropic mixture under electric field was investigated experimentally in a single-tube shell/ tube heat exchanger. A special electrode configuration which provides a more uniform electric field that produces more higher voltage limit against the dielectric breakdown was used in this study. Experimental study has revealed that the electrical charge relaxation time is an important parameter for the boiling heat transfer enhancement under electric field. Up to 1210% enhancement of boiling heat transfer was obtained for R113+wt4% ethanol mixture which has the electrical charge relaxation time of 0.0053 sec whereas only 280% enhancement obtained for R113 which has relaxation time of 0.97 sec. With artificially machined boiling surface, more enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient in the azeotropic mixture was obtained.
Nanofluid is a novel heat transfer fluid prepared by dispersing nanometer-sized solid particles in traditional heat transfer fluid to increase thermal conductivity and heat transfer performance. In this research we have considered the rheological properties of nanofluids made of CuO particles of 10-30nm in length and ethylene glycol in conjunction with the thermal conductivity enhancement. When examined using TEM, individual CuO particles have the shape of prolate spheroid of the aspect ratio of 3 and most of the particles are under aggregated states even after sonication for a prolonged period. From the rheological property it has been found that the volume fraction at the dilute limit is 0.002, which is much smaller than the value based on the shape and size of individual particles due to aggregation of particles. At the semi-dilute regime, the zero shear viscosity follows the Doi-Edwards theory on rodlike particles. The thermal conductivity measurement shows that substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity with respect to particle concentration is attainable only when particle concentration is below the dilute limit.
Nucleate boiling heat transfer is one of the most important phenomenon in the various industries. Especially, critical heat flux (CHF) refers to the upper limit of the pool boiling heat transfer region. Therefore, many researchers have found that CHF can be significantly increased by adding very small amounts of nanoparticles. In this study, the CHF and heat transfer coefficient were tested under the pool boiling state using copper and multi wall carbon nanotube nanoparticles. The results showed that two different types of nanoparticles deposited on the surface of two specimens made of the same material increased the heat flux in the nanoparticles with high conductivity, and there was no difference in the critical heat flux when the same material nanoparticles were deposited on the two different specimen surfaces.

Application of the supercritical condition in reactor core cooling needs to be properly justified based on the extreme level of parameters involved. Therefore, a numerical study is presented to compare the thermalhydraulic performance of supercritical and single-phase natural circulation loops under low-to-intermediate power levels. Carbon dioxide and water are selected as respective working fluids, operating under an identical set of conditions. Accordingly, a three-dimensional computational model was developed, and solved with an appropriate turbulence model and equations of state. Large asymmetry in velocity and temperature profiles was observed in a single cross section due to local buoyancy effect, which is more prominent for supercritical fluids. Mass flow rate in a supercritical loop increases with power until a maximum is reached, which subsequently corresponds to a rapid deterioration in heat transfer coefficient. That can be identified as the limit of operation for such loops to avoid a high temperature, and therefore, the use of a supercritical loop is suggested only until the appearance of such maxima. Flow-induced heat transfer deterioration can be delayed by increasing system pressure or lowering sink temperature. Bulk temperature level throughout the loop with water as working fluid is higher than supercritical carbon dioxide. This is until the heat transfer deterioration, and hence the use of a single-phase loop is prescribed beyond that limit.
