  • In this study, the thermal behavior characteristics of the cylinder block of a small 3-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine were analyzed, using the 3-dimensional finite element method. Before numerical analyses were conducted, the performance test and the heat transfer experiment of the engine were carried out in order to prepare the input data for the computations. Engine cycle simulation was performed to obtain the heat transfer coefficient and the temperature of the gas and the mean heat transfer coefficient of coolant. Temperature fields as a result of steady-state heat transfer were obtained and compared with experimental results measured at specific points of the inner and the outer walls of the cylinder block. The thermal stress and deformation characteristics resulting from the nonuniform temperature distributions of the block were investigated. The effects of the thermal behaviors of the cylinder block on the engine operations and the unfavourable aspects of excessive thermal loading were examined on the basis of the calculated results.

  • An experimental study for the flow in an axisymmetric cavity of rectangular tube was performed. The pressure and heat transfer coefficient along the side and opposite-walls of the cavity were measured. The cavity length was varied from 80mm to infinity during the experiment. As the result of this study, it was found that as the length of cavity increased beyond the reattachment point, the heat transfer coefficient decreased. It was also found that the mean heat transfer coefficient became maximum near the reattachment point.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of staggered dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The RBNN method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter (d/D), channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio (H/D), and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio (D/S) are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) is used to determine the training points as a mean of the design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

  • The boiling heat transfer was experimentally investigated for the FC-77 sprays impacting a square heated test surface in a downward direction. Full cone spray nozzles were employed for the spray cooling experiment, and experiments were made under the test conditions of $Q=3.32{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}2.30{\times}10^{-5}\;m^3/s$, ${\Delta}T_{sub}=20{\sim}70^{\circ}C$. Also, heat transfer measurements were made using the copper block of $10{\times}10\;mm^2$ test area heated by nine cartridge heater. From the experimental results, correlation between the Nusselt number and Reynolds number based on droplet-flow-rate was developed. The correlation shows good predictions with ${\pm}30%$ error for FC-77.

  • A finned tube type heat transfer module has been proposed for a multi-burner water tube boiler. Fins change their geometry along the streamwise direction to maximize the performance, which makes it difficult to apply conventional bulk analysis. The design program has been improved by updating data for every row of tubes along the flow. A numerical simulation has been also performed to evaluate the effect of inlet conditions and validated with experiment. The heat transfer of the first row has been underpredicted by the conventional Zhukauskas correlation, where the acceleration of the flow due to the blockage is not fully inflected. The fin tip temperature is also underpredicted by Bessel solution, because of the interaction with neighboring fins.

  • Gas turbine combustors is critical part due to high temperature operating conditions and the optimization of cooling design is required to avoid combustor failure. In gas turbine combustor, effusion cooling, impingement cooling and thermal barrier coating (TBC) are commonly used to improve cooling characteristics. In conceptual design, these cooling schemes are designed by 1D heat transfer calculation. Therefore, these design should be validated ted by nemurical or experiment methods. In this study, Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) analysis is performed for validation of gas turbine combustor cooling design.

  • The operation of a low temperature differential model stirling engine is tested and analyzed by Simple analysis model. The heat transfer coefficients are required for Simple analysis, and the coefficients are determined by coinciding the P-V diagram of analysis to the diagram of experiment. The results show a good agreement. However the heat transfer coefficients are quite high by comparison with the ordinary forced convective heat transfer cases.

  • Laminar natural convective heat transfer within a two-dimensional rectangular enclosure with horizontal conducting walls and partitions was investigated by numerical analysis and experiment. The enclosure consists of two isothermal vertical walls and two adiabatic horizontal walls. This combined heat transfer problem of conduction and natural convection was solved using finite difference method with SIMPLE algorithm, and temperature distribu-tions in the air filled enclosure was obtained using Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Good agree-ment was obtained between the predicted and measured results. The effect of geometric parameters and thermal properties on heat transfer was studied far Grashof numbers in range, $1\times10^4\;{\leqslant}\;G^r\;{\leqslant}\;6.4\times10^5.$ It was found that both velocity and temperature fields were in-fluenced significantly by thermal conductivity of the conducting walls and the partitions, and by geometry of partitions.

  • For this purpose, the authors proposed and proved usefulness of the modified mean skin temperature which is integrated mean radiation temperature and the effect of floor contacted heat conduction. The mean radiation temperature is applied form factor between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall of indoor. In addition the floor contacted heat conduction is applied heat transfer coefficient of half cross-legged human body. Eight Korean young men were targeted for the experiment. From the experiment the authors excerpted physiological reaction and psychological reaction in Ondol environment which is combined physiccal environmental factor of artificial climate chamber, air and floor temperature. As a result of the experiment it is confirmed that heat conduction has more impact than heat exchange from existing research for the heat exchange between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall in Ondol thermal environment. Thereby, it is proved the effectiveness of the modified mean skin temperature which is added floor contacted temperature to the Ondol thermal environmental evaluation index.
