This paper reviews the development status of magnetic refrigeration system for hydrogen liquefaction. There is no doubt that hydrogen is one of most important energy sources in the near future. In particular, liquid hydrogen can be utilized for infrastructure construction consisting of storage and transportation. Liquid hydrogen is in cryogenic temperatures and therefore high efficient liquefaction method must be studied. Magnetic refrigeration which uses the magneto-caloric effect has potential to realize not only the higher liquefaction efficiency > 50 %, but also to be environmentally friendly and cost effective. Our hydrogen magnetic refrigeration system consists of Carnot cycle for liquefaction stage and AMR (active magnetic regenerator) cycle for precooling stages. For the Carnot cycle, we develop the high efficient system > 80 % liquefaction efficiency by using the heat pipe. For the AMR cycle, we studied two kinds of displacer systems, which transferred the working fluid. We confirmed the AMR effect with the cooling temperature span of 12 K for 1.8 T of the magnetic field and 6 second of the cycle. By using the simulation, we estimate the total efficiency of the hydrogen liquefaction plant for 10 kg/day. A FOM of 0.47 is obtained in the magnetic refrigeration system operation temperature between 20 K and 77 K including LN2 work input.
In order to find out whether solar air conditioning system could be applied to building or not, the performance and evaluation on thermal environment of the system suggested was done during summer. A solar model house was constructed to find out the performance and thermal environment evaluation when it actually operated outside. As a result, regeneration rate increased rapidly when LiCl solution temperature was over $50^{\circ}C$ and the regeneration rate was $13\sim15kg$ during 9 hours operation. Furthermore the dehumidification rate was 12kg at maximum during 10 hours operating of a dehumidifier and indoor temperature and relative humidity was $28.4^{\circ}C$ and 39.1% in average respectively. On evaluation of thermal environment during summer, PMV value was slightly high, but thermal sensation vote was 71% within the comfort zone.

This paper describes generating efficiency characteristics of the double acting Stirling engine/generator for domestic small-scale CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system. In small distributed generation applications, Stirling engine has competition from fuel cell, microturbine and etc. In order to be economical in the applications, a long life with minimum maintenance is generally required. Free piston Stirling engine (FPSE) has no crank and rotating parts to generate lateral forces and require lubrication. Double acting Stirling engine/generator has one displacer and two power piston which are supported by flexure springs. Two power pistons oscillate with symmetric displacement and are connected with moving magnet type linear generators for power generation from PV work. In experiments, 1 kW class double acting free piston Stirling engine/generator is fabricated and tested. Heat is supplied to hot end of engine by the combustion of natural gas and converted to electric power by linear generators which are assembled with power pistons. The electric parameters such as voltage, current and phase are measured with for variable flow rate of fuel gas. Especially, generating efficiency of FPSE is measured with three different measurement methods. Generating efficiency of the double acting Stirling engine/alternator is about 24%.

In this study, the performance characteristics of the K-based sorbents (KEP-CO2P2, KEPCO RI, Korea) has been studied in relation with the heat exchanger structure and shape in a mixing zone of the carbonator in the bench-scale dry $CO_2$ capture process. Two types of heat exchangers (different structure and shape) were used in the carbonator as CASE 1 and CASE 2, in which the experiment has been continuously performed under the same operating conditions. During the continuous operation, working temperature of carbonator was 75 to $80^{\circ}C$, that of regenerator was 190 to $200^{\circ}C$, and $CO_2$ inlet concentration of the feed gas was 12 to 14 vol%. Especially, to compare the dynamic sorption capacity of sorbents, the differential pressure of the mixing zone in the carbonator was maintained around 400 to 500 mm $H_2O$. Also, solid samples from the carbonator and the regenerator were collected and weight variation of those samples was evaluated by TGA. The $CO_2$ removal efficiency and the dynamic sorption capacity were 64.3% and 2.40 wt%, respectively for CASE 1 while they were 81.0% and 4.66 wt%, respectively for CASE 2. Also, the dynamic sorption capacity of the sorbent in CASE 1 and CASE 2 was 2.51 wt% and 4.89 wt%, respectively, based on the weight loss of the TGA measurement results. Therefore, It was concluded that there could be a difference in the performance characteristics of the same sorbents according to the structure and type of heat exchanger inserted in the carbonator under the same operating conditions.
A mathematical model has been developed to describe heat transfer phenomena in a PCM (phase change material) module for development of an energy recovery system. The PCM module, melting point of which is around 1673 K, consists of silicon(96.8%), aluminium(2.7%) and marginal amounts of impurities such as Ca, Fe and Ti. The module is covered by a capsule that consists of SiC(58%) and graphite(42%). Physical properties that are required for model predictions were cited from the references. The apparent capacity method and the postiterative method wert used in the mathematical model to describe the phase changing mechanism. Temperature and velocity of fluid are the major variables in the model calculation. For the gas temperature of 1773 K that simulates real operating conditions, the prediction shows that PCM is rapidly melted to axial direction. However, for the gas temperature of 3000 K that is higher than the real conditions, PCM is melted rapidly to the radial direction. The gas velocity has no influence on the melting phenomena of the PCM except when the gas velocity is relatively low. At the low gas velocity asymmetry of the temperature profiles in PCM is obtained.

This report Introduces a total heat exchanger in a solar air-conditioning system using Lithium Chloride(LiCl) solution. The hot and humid outside air is cooled and dehumidified by LiCl solution that is sprayed on the packed layer of the total heat exchanger. LiCl solution once diluted is concentrated again in a regenerator using solar energy. Three types as the packed materials were used in this experiment and the dehumidification performance was evaluated by the value of $k_xa(kg/h{\cdot}m^3{\cdot}{\Delta}x)$, overall mass transfer coefficient based on a humidity ratio potential difference, the influence of inlet LiCl solution flow rate, air flow rate, packed layer height on $k_xa$ was investigated. It was found that air flow rate, LiCl solution flow rate, packed layer height for all types had a great influnce on the value of $k_xa$.
In this paper, the performance analysis for evaporation capacity, total work and efficiency of the ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) power system using mixed refrigerant(R32,R152a) is conducted to find the effect of hot wasted water on OTEC power system. The system in this study is applied with two stage turbine, regenerator, cooler and separator on Organic Rankine Cycle. The commercial program HYSYS is used for the performance analysis. The main results were summarized as follows : The efficiency of the OTEC power cycle has a largely effect on the evaporation capacity and total work. As increasing temperature of heat source water, evaporator's capacity is decreased but total work increase. Otherwise, using hot wasted water bring effects not only increasing system efficiency but also declining evaporator's capacity. Thus With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to find way to use hot wasted water emitted by power plant and so on.

In order to reduce the compression power and to use the overall energy contained in LNG effectively, a combined cycle is devised and simulated. The combined cycle is composed of two cycles; one is an open cycle of liquid/solid carbon dioxide production cycle utilizing LNG cold energy in $CO_2$ condenser and the other is a closed cycle gas turbine which supplies power to the $CO_2$ cycle, utilizes LNG cold energy for lowering the compressor inlet temperature, and uses the heating value of LNG at the burner. The power consumed for the $CO_2$ cycle is investigated in terms of a production ratio of solid $CO_2$. The present study shows that much reduction in both $CO_2$ compression power (only $35\%$ of power used in conventional dry ice production cycle) and $CO_2$ condenser pressure could be achieved by utilizing LNG cold energy and that high cycle efficiency ($55.3\%$ at maximum power condition) in the gas turbine could be accomplished with the adoption of compressor inlet cooling and regenerator. Exergy analysis shows that irreversibility in the combined cycle increases linearly as a production ratio of solid $CO_2$ increases and most of the irreversibility occurs in the condenser and the heat exchanger for compressor inlet cooling. Hence, incoming LNG cold energy to the above components should be used more effectively.

This paper describes the continuing effort to develope a single acting free-piston Stirling engine/alternator combination for use of the household cogeneration. Free piston Stirling engines(FPSE) use variations of working gas pressure to drive mechanically unconstrained reciprocating elements. Stirling cycle free-piston engines are driven by the Stirling thermodynamic cycle which is characterized by an externally heated device containing working gas that is continuously re-used in a regenerative, reversible cycle. The ideal cycle is described by two isothermal process connected by two constant volume processes. Heat removed during the constant volume cooling process is internally transferred to the constant volume heating process by mutual use of a thermal storage medium called the regenerator. Since the ideal cycle is reversible, the ideal efficiency is that of Carnot. Free-piston Stirling engine is have no crank and rotating parts to generate lateral forces and require lubrication. The FPSE is typically comprised of two oscillating pistons contained in a common cylinder. The temperature difference across the displacer maintains the oscillations, and the FPSE operate at natural frequency of the mass-spring system. The power is generated from a linear alternator. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design process of the single acting free-piston Stirling engine/alternator. Electrical output of the single acting free-piston Stirling engine/alternator is about 0.95 kW.
