  • Fluid flow and heat transfer have been numerically investigated for an oscillating flow in a tube with a regenerator. The regenerator is placed between hot and cold spaces which are heated and cooled at uniform temperature. An oscillating flow is generated by the piston motion at both ends of a tube. The time dependent, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved by using the finite-volume and moving grid method. The regenerator is adopted as Brinkmann-Forchheimer extended Darcy model. Numerical results are obtained for the flow and temperature fields, and described the effects of the oscillating frequency and amplitude ratio by the piston motion as well as the aspect ratio. The numerical results obtained indicate that the heat transfer between the tube wall and oscillating flow is increased as the oscillating frequency, amplitude ratio and the aspect ratio are increased.

  • The effectiveness of the regenerator pertaining to Stirling cycle machines is studied by analyzing the heat transfer characteristics of the oscillating flow in a tube, and a new consistent definition of the regenerator effectiveness can be expressed by the ratio of the heat transfer in axial direction (Q$\_$axial/) to that in transverse direction (Q/su w/), and its approximate form is obtained as a function of Nusselt number for practical utility. Since an approximate value of the ratio Q$\_$axial//Qsub w/ can be expressed in terms of the time-averaged rather than transient temperatures, this expression is useful to estimate the heat transfer coefficient in the Stirling machine regenerator experimentally.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the effects of the combination of the different wire mesh number in a regenerator and the tube number in a cooler on the cooling performance of a Vuilleumier cycle heat pump. Effects of operating conditions, such as charging pressure, operating speed, and heat input, on the cooling performance are also studied. The experimental results obtained indicate that the cooling performance could be improved with the proper combination of different wire meshes in a regenerator. More tubes in a cooler are desirable for better cooling performance. It is also found that the cooling capacity is enhanced, whereas COP is reduced with an increase in the heater tube temperature and the revolution speed. Both the cooling capacity and COP are incereased with a higher charging pressure.

  • The output of Stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, 6 kinds of steel wires, 4 kinds of combined steel wires, 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes were used. The results are summarized as follows; Among 6 kinds of steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm,\;{\phi}\;1.6\;mm,\;{\phi}2.0\;mm,\;{\phi}2.7\;mm),$ the two steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm)$ showed the highest in effectiveness. • A basic pulse tube refrigerator has been constructed with extensive instrumentation to study the characteristics of the heat exchanger experimentally under the oscillating pressure and the oscillating flow. This paper describes the sequential experiments with the basic pulse tube refrigerator. The experiments were performed for various cycle frequencies under the square pressure wave forms. First, the heat flux was measured through the cycle at the both cold and warm end heat exchangers without the regenerator. In order to enhance the thermal communication capability of the heat exchanger with the gas at low operating frequencies, a unique design of the triangular shape radial fin concept was applied to the heat exchangers. For the fin heat exchanger, the measured heat flux and the calculated heat flux from the two well-known oscillating heat transfer correlations were compared and discussed. Second, the regenerator was added to the pulse tube to make a basic pulse tube refrigerator configuration. The experiment showed the great impact of the regenerator on the temperature and the heat flux profiles. At the warm-end, the cyclic averaged heat flux had its maximum value at the specific operating frequency. The paper presents the explanation of the surface heat pumping effect as well as the experimental data.

  • This paper deals with the analysis method of regenerator characteristics for designing a vuilleumier heat pump. First, models for evaluating the reheat and the flow losses are established by the comparative study between already proposed ones. Calculations based on the second-order method are performed for the well-known schulz heat pump. Results show that operating conditions as well as design parameters significantly affect the regenerator performances. The effects of operating conditions on the reheat and the flow losses appear to be similar in trends in both the hot-warm and the cold-warm regenerators. However, the losses in the one regenerator vary oppositely to those in the other with specific design parameters such as the phase angle and the swept volume ratio being changed. Also, it is confirmed that there is an optimum aspect ratio(D/L) which minimizes total loss for each regenerator.

  • Liquid desiccant dehumidification system can be used effectively to save energy consumed in air conditioning as an alternative compared with conventional air conditioning systems by reducing latent heat load. The dehumidifier and the regenerator from the heart of this system. The latent part of the cooling load is handled using liquid desiccant. In this study, the experimental regenerator has been designed to study the regeneration characteristics of the aqueous triethylene glycol(TEG) system. The performance factors of the regenerator with finned tube heat exchanger were evaluated by a series of experimental runs. The regeneration process is highly dependent on the liquid desiccant conditions, such as, temperature, concentration and flow rate. In addition, the effects of the inlet air temperature, humidity and flow rate were discussed. Data obtained are useful for design guidance and performance analysis of a regenerator, particularly for a liquid desiccant cooling system.

When a regenerator is filled with the wire screen of No. 100, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow shows 2 times faster than that of one directional flow, regardless of the number of packed wire screens. 4. Working fluid velocity is decreased wire the increase in number of meshes and packed wire screens.

  • Stirling engine is an external combustion engine, whose efficiency approaches that of Carnot engine with the help of a regenerator. The regenerator is a heat exchanger composed of porous medium, whose performance is dependent on the pore structure. Three types of pore structures are considered in the present study. They are wire screen, random wire and composite structure, i.e. a combination of wire screens with different hydraulic diameters. The porosity more highly affects the performance of a regenerator compared to the hydraulic diameter. The random wire can yield high effectiveness even at a high porosity. The composite mesh gives better performance when the hydraulic diameter decreases in the direction from hot side to cold side.

  • The aim of this paper is to perform the experiment and the numerical simulation for investigating the heat transfer in a regenerator system with ceramic honeycomb and to suggest a useful correlation for optimization of the regenerator system. For achieving this, the effects of some parameters were investigated, e. g., switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb on the mean temperature efficiency. The measured temperatures by R-type thermocouples were compared with the predictions by means of the commercial package, STAR-CD. A useful correlation for thermal efficiency was newly proposed as a function of the normalized switching time, defined in terms of switching time, cell size and length of honeycomb. The results showed that the thermal efficiency is above 90% and the normalized heat exchange rate is higher than 80% when the normalized switching time is less than 1000.
