Thermal stability of quasi-isotropic composite and polymeric structures is considered one of the most important criteria in predicting life span of building structures. The outdoor applications of these structures have raised some legitimate concerns about their durability including moisture resistance and thermal stability. Exposure of such quasi-isotropic composite/polymeric structures to various and severe climatic conditions such as heat flux and frigid climate would change the material behavior and thermal viability and may lead to the degradation of material properties and building durability. This paper presents an analytical model for the generalized problem. This model accommodates the non-linearity and the non-homogeneity of the internal heat generated within the structure and the changes, modification to the material constants, and the structural size. The paper also investigates the effect of the incorporation of the temperature and/or material constant sensitive internal heat generation with four encountered climatic conditions on thermal stability of infinite cylindrical quasi-isotropic composite/polymeric structures. This can eventually result in the failure of such structures. Detailed critical analyses for four case studies which consider the population of the internal heat generation, cylindrical size, material constants, and four different climatic conditions are carried out. For each case of the proposed boundary conditions, the critical thermal stability parameter is determined. The results of this paper indicate that the thermal stability parameter is critically dependent on the cylinder size, material constants/selection, the convective heat transfer coefficient, subjected heat flux and other constants accrued from the structure environment.
To investigate the air mass modification related with Yeongdong Heavy snowfall events, we examined sensible and latent heat fluxes on the East Sea, the energy exchange between atmosphere and ocean in this study. Sensible and latent heats were calculated by a bulk aerodynamic method, in which NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and NOAA/AVHRR weekly SST data with high resolution were used. Among winter precipitation events in the Yeongdong region, 19 heavy precipitation events $(1995{\sim}2001)$ were selected and classified into three types (mountain, cold-coastal, and warm types). Mountain-type precipitation shows highly positive anomalies of sensible and latent heats over the southwestern part of the East Set When separating them into the two components due to variability of wind and temperature/ specific Humidity, it is shown that the wind components are dominant. Cold-coastal-type precipitation also shows strong positive anomalies of sensible and latent heats over the northern part and over the central-northern part of the East Sea, respectively. It is shown that the sensible heat anomalies are caused mostly by the decrease of surface air temperature. So it can be explained that cold-coastal-type precipitation is closely related with the air mass modification due to cold air advection over warm ocean surface. But in warm-type precipitation, negative anomalies are found in the sensible and latent heat distributions. From this result, it may be postulated that warm-type precipitation is affected by the internal process of the atmosphere rather than the atmosphere-ocean interaction.

An experimental study is conducted to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a multi-tube inserted impinging jet. Four different multi-tube devices are tested for various nozzle-to-plate distance. Flow visualization by smoke-wire method and velocity measurements using a hot-wire anemometer are applied to analyze the flow characteristics of the multi-tube insert impinging jet. The local heat transfer coefficients of the multi-tube inserted impinging jet on the impingement surface are measured and the results are compared to those of the conventional jet. In multi-tube inserted system the multi-tube length plays an important role in the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the jet flow. With multi-tube insert of I3d4 and I6d4 which has relatively longer tube length than the multi-tube-exit of I3d1 and I6d1, the flow maintains its increased velocity far downstream due to interaction between adjacent flows. For the small H/D of 4, the local heat transfer coefficients of multi-tube inserted impinging jet are much higher than those of the conventional jet because the flow has higher velocity and turbulent intensity by the use of the multi-tube device. At large gap distance of H/D=12, also higher heat transfer rates are obtained by installing multi-tube insert except multi-tube insert of I3d1.

An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system with inclined jet. Jets with inclined angle of 60 are applied to impingement/effusion cooling. At the jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the experiments were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.0 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result indicates that the inclined jet causes the non-uniform and low heat/mass transfer compared to the vertical jet. At stagnation region, the peak position is shifted from the geometrical center of injection hole due to Coanda effect and its level is higher than that of vertical jet due to increase in turbulence intensity by steep velocity gradient near the stagnation region. Further, the secondary peak region disappears because the interaction between adjacent wall jets weakens. When the initial crossflow occurs, the distorted heat/mass transfer pattern appears. As the blowing ratio (crossflow rate) increases, the heat/mass transfer distributions become similar to those of the vertical jet. This is because the effect of crossflow is dominant compared to that of inclined jet under high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$. At low blowing ratio $(M{\leq}0.5)$, averaged Sh value is 10% lower than that of vertical jet, whereas its value at high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$ is similar to that of vertical jet.
Japanese Ocean Flux Data Sets with Use of Remote Sensing Observations (J-OFURO) includes global ocean surface heat flux data derived from satellite data and are used in many studies related to air-sea interaction. Recently latent heat flux data version 2 was constructed in J-OFURO. In version 2 many points are improved compared with version 1. A bulk algorithm used for estimation of latent heat flux is changed from Kondo (1975) to COASRE 3.0(Fairall et al., 2005). In version 1 we used NCEP reanalysis data (Reynolds and Smith, 1994) as SST data. However, the temporal resolution of the data is weekly and considerably low. Recently there are many kinds of global SST data because we can obtain SST data using a microwave radiometer sensor such as TRMM/MI and Aqua/AMSR-E. Therefore, we compared many SST products and determined to use Merged satellite and in situ data Global Daily (MGD) SST provided by Japan Meteorological Agency. Since we use wind speed and specific humidity data derived from one DMSP/SSMI sensor in J-OFURO, we obtain two data at most one day. Therefore, there may be large sampling errors for the daily-mean value. In order to escape this problem, multi-satellite data are used in version 2. As a result we could improve temporal resolution from 3-days mean value in version 1 to daily-mean value in version 2. Also we used an Optimum Interpolation method to estimate wind speed and specific humidity data instead of a simple mean method. Finally the data period is extended to 1989-2004. In this presentation we will introduce latent heat flux data version 2 in J-OFURO and comparison results with other surface latent heat flux data such as GSSTF2 and HOAPS etc. Moreover, we will present validation results by using buoy data.

Objective: In tropical, subtropical and arid zones, heat stress is the main cause of productivity reduction in cattle. When climate stressors occur, animals become thermal adapted through differential expression of some genes, including heat shock proteins (HSP) family. The aim of this study was to determine levels of expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes in Simmental cattle raised in tropical environments of Mexico. Methods: In this study, expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 genes was analyzed in 116 Simmental cattle from three farms with tropical climate located in western Mexico. Animals were sampled twice a day, in the morning and noon. Gene expression was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using probes marked with fluorescence. The MIXED procedure of SAS with repeated measures was used for all statistical analysis. Results: HSP60 gene expression differences were found for sex (p = 0.0349). HSP70 gene differences were detected for sampling hour (p = 0.0042), farm (p<0.0001), sex (p = 0.0476), and the interaction sampling hour×farm (p = 0.0002). Gene expression differences for HSP90 were observed for farm (p<0.0001) and year (p = 0.0521). HSP70 gene showed to be a better marker of heat stress than HSP60 and HSP90 genes. Conclusion: Expression of HSP70 gene in Simmental herds of the tropical region of western México was different during early morning and noon, but the expression of the HSP60 and HSP90 genes was similar. Identification of resilient animals to heat stress will be useful in the genetic improvement of the Simmental breed.

Recent years have witnessed a strong need for eco-friendly and energy-efficient systems owing to global environmental problems. A heat exchanger is a well-known mechanical rig that has long been used in many energy systems. The use of a heat exchanger in an airplane engine has been attempted. In this case, the heat exchanger should be redesigned to be compact, lightweight, and highly reliable, and the issue of mechanical integrity gains importance. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a method for evaluating the mechanical integrity of a tube-type heat exchanger. A U-shaped single tube was used as an example, and its behavior and stress distribution were studied using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis.

The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and spray combustion processes in DI diesel engine using DME and n-heptane. In order to realistically simulate the dimethyl ether (DME) spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment, the high-pressure vaporization model has been utilized. The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interaction Flamelet (RIF) model. The detailed chemistry of 336 elementary steps and 78 chemical species is used for the DME/air reaction. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the distinctly different combustion characteristics of DME diesel engine in term of vaporization, ignition delay, pollutant formation, and heat release rate.
This study presents relations between the time lag and interaction index of the impinging-jet injectors using time lag model in a model chamber. To analyze the response of the flame, 5% amplitude of oxidizer velocity is artificially perturbed at a resonance frequency. At the mixing point of fuel and oxidizer, which determines the characteristic length, the relationship between velocity perturbation and heat release rate is quantified by combustion parameters of interaction index and time lag. As the improved method to apply the time-lag, the method using the average velocity obtained from numerical results is suggested.
Shock wave interaction with droplet-gas medium is investigated in this paper. In the present computation, the shock wave is initially started in a pure gas and reflected from the wedge to interact with the droplet-ridden gas flows. We used the compressible two-fluid two-phase model that is solved by the two-fluid version of the HLL scheme. The interfacial drag force and heat transfer were included to model the interaction between continuous and dispersed phases. The parametric effect of void fraction on the shock wave reflection in the two-phase media was investigated.
