  • Feeding of bypass protein to lactating animals have been suggested by many research scientists as a way to increase the nutrient supply at the intestinal level thereby enhance animal production in ruminant animals. A feeding trial with a formulated bypass protein feed on straw based ration was carried out by using lactating cross bred cows at the stage of 4th month of their lactation. Bypass protein feed was fed at 5 different levels. Urea Molasses Block was used as a nitrogen source to the rumen microflora. In order to reduce the heat increment straw intake was restricted to all the animals. Urea Molasses Block intake was noticed varying in proportion with the bypass protein feed intake. Milk production was observed increasing in accordance with the level of bypass protein feed intake. However, the maximum response was noticed in cows that were fed 3 kg bypass protein feed. The nutrient availability at this stage was below the NRC (1988) requirements. Other remarkable finding was that the cows maintained the persistency of milk production even after 3rd month of lactation when the ambient temperature was $40^{\circ}C$.

  • OBJECTIVES : Schizandra chinensis is well known for its efficacy at liver function reinforcement, relieving thirst and recovery from fatigue. In this study, we examined the effects of sports drink containing Schizandra chinensis on serum metabolic substrate, electrolyte, stress indicators, related-enzyme and exercise performance, rectal temperature, and heat shock proteinb70 (HSP70). METHODS : Elite long-distance runners (male, 21.3yrs, n=16) were selected and divided into two groups; an experimental group (EXP, n=8) and a control group (CON, n=8). A beverage containing Schizandra chinensis was supplemented 3 times per day to EXP for 4 weeks. Serum biochemical elements (glucose, lactate, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, creatinine, creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea nitrogen, Na, K, Cl) were analyzed by auto blood analyzer. Exercise performance was measured by treadmill exercise test, HSP70 was detected by electrophoresis and Western blotting, and rectal temperature was measured by rectal temperature probe. RESULTS : Administration of the beverage increased significantly the rest level of blood Na, Cl and glucose and decreased significantly lactate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase. No difference was found in exercise performance, rectal temperature increment or HSP70 concentration between groups. CONCLUSIONS : Administration of a sports drink containing Schizandra chinensis altered blood glucose, lactate dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, Na and Cl levels.

  • A numerical study has been performed for the 2-dimensional film cooling employed in the cooling of hot components such as gas turbines. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are numerically simulated using FLUENT software. Blowing ratios vary from 0.25 to 5.0 and coolant injection angles vary from $15^{\circ}\;to\;60^{\circ}\;in\;15^{\circ}$ increment. The result shows that, for all cases, there exists a blowing ratio which maximizes film cooling effect (measured by the distance from the slot exit to the downstream wall location at which temperature increases to 900 K) for a given injection angle. It is also observed that the film cooling effectiveness decreases when downstream wall is sunk or lifted. The simulation has been performed using both constant properties and temperature dependent variable properties. It is found that the cases with constant properties overestimate the film cooling effect considerably.

  • An experimental investigation was executed to determine the capacity degradation due to fin conduction and non-uniform refrigerant distribution in a multi-path evaporator with cross-counter flow. The finned-tube evaporator, which had a three-path and three-depth-row, was tested by controlling inlet quality, exit pressure, and exit superheat for each refrigerant path. The capacity reduction due to superheat unbalance between each path was as much as $25\%$ for non-cutting evaporator, even when the overall evaporator superheat was kept at a target value of $5.6^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the internal heat transfer within the evaporator assembly causes the partial capacity drop. The capacity of cutting-evaporator with respect to non-cutting evaporator was enhanced according to the increment of air flow rate when superheat or superheat unbalance increased.

  • The influence of subsequent annealing treatment on the dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior of submicrocrystalline Al-4.4%Mg alloy is investigated in this study. After inducing an effective strain of 8 via equal-channel angular pressing at $200^{\circ}C$, most of the grains are considerably reduced to nearly equiaxed grains of $0.3{\mu}m$ in size. With an increment of various subsequent heat treatments for 1 hour, resultant microstructures are found to be fairly stable at temperatures up to $200^{\circ}C$, suggesting that static recovery will be dominantly operative, whereas grain growth is pronounced above $250^{\circ}C$. The results of tensile tests show that yield and ultimate tensile strength decrease, but elongation-to-failure and strain hardening rate increase with an increase in annealing temperatures. The dynamic deformation and the fracture behavior retrieved with a series of torsional tests are explored with respect to annealed microstructures. Such mechanical response is analyzed in relation to resultant microstructure and fracture mode.

  • This study aims to investigate the influence of the droplet volume on the evaporation characteristics of the sessile droplet. In particular, the effect of the free convection in the vapor domain on the evaporation rate was analyzed through the numerical simulation. The commercial code of the ANSYS Fluent (V.2020 R2) was used to simulate the heat transfer in the liquid-vapor domain. Moreover, we used the diffusion model to estimate the evaporation rate for the different droplet volume under the room temperature. It was found that the evaporation rate significantly increases with the droplet volume because of the larger surface area for the mass transfer. Also, the effect of free convection on the evaporation rate becomes significant with an increment of droplet volume owing to the increase in the droplet radius corresponding to the characteristic length of the free convection.

  • The spinel structured $LiMn_2O_4$was obtained by two consecutive heat treatment on xerogel; the first heat treatment was at $150^{\circ}C$ and the second at $350^{\circ}C$ was obtained by sol-gel process using an aqueous solution of lithium hydroxide and manganese acetate. The synthesized $LiMn_2O_4$ by the sol-gel process showed a discharge capacity of 88~56 mAh/g after 15 cycles in Li/lM $LiClO_4$(in PC)/$LiMn_2O_4$at a current density of 0.25 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the voltage ranged 3.5 V to 4.3 V. For the second heat treatment above $350^{\circ}C$, $Mn_2O_3$was formed as a by-product during the synthesis of $LiMn_2O_4$. The heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$, for example, showed a lower discharge capacity 81~47 mAh/g, after the 15 charge/discharge cycles. The lower capacity was due to the increment of $Mn^{3+}$ ion and this phenomenon was in agreement with the Jahn-Teller distortion.

  • The present study was conducted to estimate energy requirements for maintenance in laying hens by using indirect calorimetry and energy balance. A total of 576 28-wk-old Nongda-3 laying hens with dwarf gene were randomly allocated into four ME intake levels (86.57, 124.45, 166.63 and 197.20 kcal/kg body weight $(BW)^{0.75}$ per d) with four replicates each. After a 4 d adaptation period, 36 hens from one replicate were maintained in one of the two respiration chambers to measure the heat production (HP) for 3 d during the feeding period and subsequent 3 d fast. Metabolizable energy (ME) intake was partitioned between heat increment (HI), HP associated with activity, fasting HP (FHP) and retained energy (RE). The equilibrium FHP may provide an estimate of NE requirements for maintenance (NEm). Results showed that HP, HI and RE in the fed state increased with ME intake level (p<0.05). Based on the regression of HP on ME intake, the estimated ME requirements for maintenance (MEm) was 113.09 kcal/kg $BW^{0.75}$ per d when ME intake equals HP. The FHP was decreased day by day with the lowest value on the third day of starvation. Except for lowest ME intake level, the FHP increased with ME intake level on the first day of starvation (p<0.05). The FHP at the two higher ME intake levels were greater than that at the two lower ME intake levels (p<0.05) but no difference was found between the two lower ME intake levels. Linear regression of HP from the fed state to zero ME intake yielded a value of 71.02 kcal/kg $BW^{0.75}$ per d, which is higher than the extrapolated FHP at zero ME intake (60.78, 65.23 and 62.14 kcal/kg $BW^{0.75}$ per d for the first, second and third day of fasting, respectively). Fasting time, lighting schedules, calculation methods and duration of adaptation of hens to changes in ME intake level should be properly established when using indirect calorimetry technique to estimate dietary NE content, MEm and NEm for laying hens.

  • To get well matured farm yard manure from ricestraw as quickly as possible during winter season, straw piles wrapped with polyethylene film and/or straw thatch were stored in the vinyl house or open air. Their maturities and changes of temperature in heap were investigated from the beginning of December 1983 to March of next year. Heat increment in vinyl house was high $2-5^{\circ}C$ than at open air at the lowest temperature but it didn't rise over the freezing point. However, the highest temperature was arisen over than $20^{\circ}C$ averagely at the vinylhouse compared to those of open air during three months. Temperature in piles of straw manure was reached to about $70^{\circ}C$ in maximum and rose again very rapidly after repiling in the vinyl house, whereas increment of temperature after repiling was delayed and took long times to reach the maximum temperature at open air. Wrapping with P.E. film also affected the insulation of decomposing heat of straw pile and promoted the repeat of piling even at open air. By these results, ricestraw would be decomposed rapidly by insulation with P.E. film in the vinyl house and could be reached to matured compost for application to field on next spring season. P.E. film covered for vinyl house was endured until May of next year without tear by weathering.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the temperature rise on the root surface while the root canal is being obturated using continuous wave of condensation technique. Maxillary central incisor was prepared for repeated canal obturation. Ten thermocouples (Omega Engineering Inc., Stanford, USA) were placed at 1 mm increment from the anatomical root apex. The real temperature of Buchanan plugger was recorded before insertion into the root canal. The root canal was obturated with continuous wave of condensation technique as described by Buchanan and the root surface temperature was recorded during obturation at $150^{\circ}C,{\;}200^{\circ}C,{\;}250^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}300^{\circ}C$ temperature settings of System B HeatSource (Model 1005, Analytic technologies, Redmond, WA, USA). After completion of the temperature recording, the dentinal-cementum thickness at each sites was measured. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe's test and linear regression test. The results were as follows. 1. When the temperature was set at $150^{\circ}C,{\;}200^{\circ}C,{\;}250^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}300^{\circ}C$ on the digital display of System B HeatSource, the real temperature of the plugger at the 1mm point from the tip revealed $130.82{\pm}2.96^{\circ}C,{\;}158.00{\pm}5.26^{\circ}C,{\;}215.92{\pm}6.91^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}249.88{\pm}3.65^{\circ}C$ respectively. 2. The position of 8 mm from the anatomical apex showed the highest temperature increase at each temperature settings and it was significantly higher than those of other positions (p<0.0l). The temperature rise was constantly increased toward coronal portion from apex of the root. 3. The maximum temperature increase on the root surface was $2.37{\pm}0.09^{\circ}C{\;}at{\;}150^{\circ}C{\;}setting,{\;}3.11{\pm}0.12^{\circ}C{\;}at{\;}200^{\circ}{\;}setting,{\;}3.93{\pm}0.09^{\circ}C{\;}at{\;}250^{\circ}C{\;}setting{\;}and{\;}5.69{\pm}0.15^{\circ}C{\;}at{\;}300^{\circ}C$ setting respectively. These results suggest that it be relatively kind to the supporting tissues of the root that the root canal is obturated using continuous wave of condensation technique at $150^{\circ}C,{\;}200^{\circ}C,{\;}250^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}300^{\circ}C$ temperature settings on digital temperature display of System B HeatSource.
