  • This study is to investigate cardiotonic effect of acupuncture on heart rate variability(HRV) analyzed by a nonlinear way(DFA, Detrended Fluctuation Analysis). It was designed as a randomized, single-blind, waiting list-controlled, cross-over study. We assessed heart rate and R-R intervals in Circadian electrocardiography with a Holter monitoring device for twelve hospitalized participants. The compatible analytical program, Zymed, was used for generating the signals of R-R intervals from 24 hour-ECG. In DFA analysis, we produced DFA alpha 1, alpha 2 parameters according to the process of Cygwin module of Linux server. We tested if there was any difference between HRV parameters using SPSS, a statistical package. There was no difference between acupuncture and no treatment group in DFA alpha 2 parameter {95% Confidence Interval (-)0.058 - 0.037, P = .565}. Two group all showed large intra-individual variations. Consequently, acupuncture treatment did not modulate the complexity of HRV in a DFA analysis. This study can be a rationale for acupuncture's properties on cardiovascular and autonomic systems.

  • Objectives We observed what effects both ratio of inhalation and exhalation(I/E) and posture have on heart rate variability(HRV) according to Sasang Constitution(SC).Methods HRV of 73 healthy participants who filled in self-questionnaires was recorded while they carried out 0.1Hz paced breathing(PB) with sitting, usual breathing(UB) with standing, and 0.1Hz PB with standing. PB was conducted to 4:6 or 6:4 of I/E and UB with sitting was executed before and after each breathing. Finally, HRV indices were analyzed of 60 participants(Soeum: 24, Soyang: 18, Taeeum: 18).Results & Conclusions In both self-questionnaires and HRV indices, there are not statistically significant between SC about the posture and I/E. SOEUM preferred 4:6 of I/E and showed lower mean RR and SDNN. SOYANG preferred 6:4 of I/E and showed higher mean RR and lower mean heart rate. TAEUM did not prefer I/E and showed the highest SDNN.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and the cold-heat pattern in patients with chronic constipation. Methods : Subjects with chronic constipation (n=30) and without chronic constipation (n=20) were recruited, interviewed and measured for heart rate variability (HRV). Chronic constipation was defined as functional constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with constipation based on Rome III criteria. We surveyed patients' general characteristics, categorized by cold-heat pattern, and took measurement of HRV for 5 minutes. Analysis was conducted among these three indices. Results : Women accounted for most of the subjects with chronic constipation (96.7%). In groups with or without constipation, the number of cold patterns was more than of heat patterns. The mean heart rate of subjects without chronic constipation was significantly higher than that of subjects with chronic constipation. No other statistical significance was noted among indices of HRV and cold-heat pattern. Conclusions : Through this study, there were few relationships between autonomic nervous system measured by HRV and cold-heat pattern in chronic constipation.

  • Objective : To evaluate autonomic nerve balance and sympathetic nerve activity in patients with inner ear dysfunction as examined by heart rate variability(HRV) Research Methods and Procedures : One hundred and twenty three patients(between 15 to 59 years old) who visited Dept. of Oriental medical Opthalmology & Otolaryngology, Kyunghee university and had an examination of HRV test, were selected as subjects of our study. We checked items of HRV test(such as SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF, TP, norm-LF, norm-HF, LF/HF ratio), and analyzed time and frequency domain differences between three groups classified as tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo. And we compared HRV items(such as SDNN,RMSSD, TP and LF/HF ratio) with standard levels. Results and Conclusion : Our results showed no significant differences between three groups in HRV items except for mean heart rate. Patients with inner ear dysfunction showed significant lower TP than 2000$(ms^{2})$(p <0.001) and significant higher LF/HF ratio than 1.5(p=0.003). So we suggest that patients with inner ear dysfunctions such as tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss, have sympathetic hypertonus and inactivity of autonomic nerve regulation.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine whether heart rate variability (HRV) and pulse wave of cancer patients can be used as indicators of their health status and prognosis. Methods: We retrospectively compared HRV, pulse wave and body mass index (BMI) of cancer patients and healthy individuals who visited W hospital from November of 2020 to October of 2021. Results: As a result of comparing HRV and pulse wave parameters between cancer patients and healthy subjects, among HRV indices, mean heart rate (MHR), standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN) and total power (TP), very low frequency (VLF) showed significant differences between two groups. Cancer patients' pulse wave parameters showed more rapid and superficial than that of healthy subjects. Also, cancer patients weighed less and had lower BMI. Conclusion: For increased MHR, decreased SDNN, rapid and superficial pulse wave can be indicators of poor prognosis of cancer patients, keep monitoring HRV and pulse wave can help to manage patients efficiently.

  • With the continuous aging of the populations in developed countries, the medical requirements of the aged are expected to increase. In this paper, a ring-type pulse oximeter finger sensor and a 24-hour ambulatory heart rate monitoring system for the aged are presented. We also demonstrate the feasibility of extracting accurate heart rate variability measurements from photoelectric plethysmography signals gathered using a ring-type pulse oximeter sensor attached to the finger. We designed the heart rate sensor using a CPU with built-in ZigBee stack for simplicity and low power consumption. We also analyzed the various distorted signals caused by motion artifacts using a FFT, and designed an algorithm using a least squares estimator to calibrate the signals for better accuracy.

  • Objectives We observed what effects of Paced Breathing(PB) in specific respiration rate have on heart rate variability (HRV) according to Sasang Constitution. Methods HRV of 72 healthy participants in sitting position was recorded while they carried out usual breathing, 0.2Hz, 0.1Hz, and 0.05Hz PB each 5 minutes in consecutive order. Five minute of relaxation was permitted between each breathing. Finally, HRV indices were statictically analyzed of 32 participants (SOEUM: 11, SOYANG: 10, TAEEUM: 11) after data out of accord with respiration rate or outliers were excluded. Results and Conclusions According to respiration rates, there was no statistical significance of HRV among Sasang Constitution. Regardless of Sasang Constituion, 0.2Hz PB increased mean heart rate and decreased natural logarithmic low frequency(lnLF) oscillation of HRV without the change of natural logarithmic high frequency(lnHF), while 0.1Hz PB increased lnLF and standard deviation of N-N interval(SDNN), and slightly decreased lnHF without the change of mean heart rate. 0.05 Hz PB also showed the same effect as 0.1Hz PB, but was impracticable.

  • Objectives Obesity is the major risk factor of the heart disease and the metabolic disease. The autonomic nervous system is a key contributor in the regulation of energy balance, so the blunted activity may contribute to the maintenance of the obese state. So we evaluated the function of the autonomic nervous system in young overweight and obese women with heart rate variability. Methods The subjects were 26 overweight and obese young women(BMI〉$23kg/m^2$) and 25 lean women who visited Kangnam Kyunghee hospital for obesity management from March 2006 to April 2008. Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA), short-term spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) were performed. Results HRV of obese young group was lower than the lean young group, but there is no statistical significance. BMI had significantly a negative correlation with Low Frequency(LF) of HRV. LF power is mediated by sympathetic nervous system activity. These results indicate a decrease of sympathetic modulation in overweight and obese young women. Conclusions Overweight and obese young women have decreased sympathetic nervous system activity. In clinical practice, an assessement of HRV would be noninvasive and sensitive methods for sympathetic nervous system of young overweight and obese women.

  • Heart Rate Variability(HRV) is a parameter that represents monitoring variability of time intervals between R-peak in electrocardiography. HRV serves to various applications, such as indices of autonomic functions, prediction of cardiac sudden death, assessment of stress and emotional, etc. However, as measuring R-peak in ECG needs at least 3-electrodes, and it is inconvenient for end users. In this paper, we suggested the modified laplacian electrodes for measuring HRV at one-point, which are producted by MEMS fabrication and have the two circular electrodes on the pad. For optimal position and direction, we performed an experiment that compared with pearson correlation coefficient and the amplitude of signals, between standard lead II and proposed electrodes. We analyzed the HRV parameters, such as standard deviation of the NN interval(SDNN), high frequency(HF), low frequency(LF), LF/HF ratio. The result showed that the average correlation coefficient and amplitude are 0.967 and 0.685 mVpp at the position 2. The coeffiecient correlation between the standard HRV and proposed electrode-HRV is 0.999
