Educational Status in Bilateral Prelingual Deaf Children with Cochlear Implantation

  • Background and Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the educational status in bilateral prelingual deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI), also known as early cochlear implantees (CIs). Type of schooling and enrollment rate of tertiary education were analyzed as primary results. Subjects and Methods: Participants in this study comprised a highly homogeneous group of deaf patients who underwent cochlear implantation at a similar age. Sixty-four Korean patients were enrolled. Statistical data for disabled populations and the general population were obtained from the National Statistics Korea. Results: Among 64 patients, 46, 8, and 10 attended mainstream, integrated, and special schools, respectively. Notably, there was a significant difference in the type of school between hearing-impaired and CI groups (p=0.007). Ten of 13 patients enrolled in tertiary education. Conclusions: CI users were more likely than hearing impaired students to attend mainstream school. The enrollment rate of CI users in tertiary education was the same as that of the general population.

  • In this research, we had two experiments. In the first experiment we focused on the comparison of loaming between two groups of hearing impaired students (multimedia training group and traditional print-based method group). The results from the first experiment indicated that there was no numerical difference in test scores between the two groups of students but the students enjoyed learning with computer. We then carried out the second experiment. This time, we focused more on measuring the qualitative nature of the learning using multimedia technology. The results of the second experiment indicated that the two methods of teaching and learning affected students similarly since the average scores of both groups showed no statistically significant difference. About 89% of the students in the second experiment enjoyed learning from the CD-ROM. This result was based not just on the CD-ROM Life in Saskatchewan, but included any kinds and subjects of CD-ROM used in the classroom. Although multimedia training is as good as, but no better than, the traditional print-based method, multimedia can be used as a valuable supplement in adaptive technology.

QLF-D를 이용한 청각장애 청소년의 구강상태에 관한 조사 (Research on Oral Status of Hearing Impaired Youth by Using QLF-D)

  • 본 연구는 울산시에 소재하는 특수학교에 재학중인 청각장애학생과 청각장애와 언어장애를 동시에 겪고 있는 학생 38명을 대상으로 Q-ray를 이용하여 구강 내를 촬영하였다. 대상자의 구강위생 상태의 분석을 위하여 치면세균막 지수를 이용하여 평가하였고 치아 상태는 건전치아 수, 우식치아 수, 우식충전 치아수로 구분하여 분석하였다. 연구결과 남학생에 비해 여학생에서 치면세균막 관리가 소홀한 것으로 나타났고, 칫솔질 시간 및 부위에 따라 치면세균막 관리정도와 우식치아 수에 있어 현저한 차이를 보였다. 또한, 새로운 장비를 이용하여 교육시킴으로서 기존의 구강보건교육 방법에 비해 만족도도 높게 나타났다. 장애학생들의 구강건강수준의 향상을 위해서는 자신 스스로 구강건강을 관리할 수 있도록 반복적인 훈련과 동기화를 일으켜 실천도를 높여야 하겠다. 그리고 시각적인 효과가 큰 장비의 이용으로 장애학생뿐만 아니라 차후 여러 계층의 대상자들의 효과적인 구강보건교육에 도움이 되어 질것으로 사료된다.

Acoustic Characteristics of Korean Deaf Speakers

  • This study was attempted to analyze the acoustic characteristics of profoundly deaf students. The 59 profoundly hearing-impaired and 36 normal subjects were divided into 3 age groups: 6-10 yrs group, 11-15 yrs group, and 16-20 yrs group. The voice was sampled in /a/ prolongation, counting, reading, and conversation using the Computerized Speech ,Lab (CSL). The vocal pitch of the deaf subjects was significantly higher than the normal subjects. The younger in age was tended to be higher in pitch and jitter values of the deaf subjects. The three age groups of the deaf subjects did not show any difference in loudness and shimmer, excepted to minimum loudness. The pitch mean of males was significantly lower than that for females.

장애학생의 학습을 위한 화상과 이러닝 시스템의 융합 개발 (Convergence Development of Video and E-learning System for Education Disabled Students)

  • 현재 정상적인 학생의 교육 규칙으로만 되어있는 학교체제에 대한 장애 학생에 대한 교육적인 환경의 대안을 제시한다. 신체장애가 있는 학생들을 위한 연구로, 특히 손사용이 어려운 신체장애인이 사용할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 장애자학습 화상 e-러닝 시스템의 개발 목적은 장애학생의 자기주도적 학습이 가능할 수 있도록 하는데 있다. 이러닝 시스템의 구성은 웹 기반의 멀티미디어 시스템으로 화상회의시스템과 음성을 글자로 바꾸어주는 시스템을 이용해 청각장애 학생이 채팅 시스템을 통해서 1:1통신함으로써 교사와 양방향 통신할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 개발한 장애자학습 이러닝 시스템은 교사와 장애학생 사이의 1:1양방향 통신 알고리즘을 이용하여 교육이 진행된다.

딥러닝 표정 인식을 활용한 실시간 온라인 강의 이해도 분석 (Analysis of Understanding Using Deep Learning Facial Expression Recognition for Real Time Online Lectures)

  • Due to the spread of COVID-19, the online lecture has become more prevalent. However, it was found that a lot of students and professors are experiencing lack of communication. This study is therefore designed to improve interactive communication between professors and students in real-time online lectures. To do so, we explore deep learning approaches for automatic recognition of students' facial expressions and classification of their understanding into 3 classes (Understand / Neutral / Not Understand). We use 'BlazeFace' model for face detection and 'ResNet-GRU' model for facial expression recognition (FER). We name this entire process 'Degree of Understanding (DoU)' algorithm. DoU algorithm can analyze a multitude of students collectively and present the result in visualized statistics. To our knowledge, this study has great significance in that this is the first study offers the statistics of understanding in lectures using FER. As a result, the algorithm achieved rapid speed of 0.098sec/frame with high accuracy of 94.3% in CPU environment, demonstrating the potential to be applied to real-time online lectures. DoU Algorithm can be extended to various fields where facial expressions play important roles in communications such as interactions with hearing impaired people.

음성특징의 거리 개념에 기반한 한국어 모음 음성의 시각화 (Speech Visualization of Korean Vowels Based on the Distances Among Acoustic Features)

  • 음성을 시각적으로 표현하는 것은 외국어를 습득하는 과정의 학습자나 음성을 직접 들을 수 없는 청각장애자에게 매우 유용하며 기존에 다수의 연구가 이루어졌다. 그러나 기존의 연구들은 발음의 특징을 단지 컬러로 표현한다든가 입모양을 3차원 그래픽으로 표현하거나 입과 구강의 변화하는 형태를 애니메이션으로 보여 주는 방식에 머물러 있다. 따라서 이런 방식을 사용하는 학습자들은 자신의 발음이 표준 발음과 얼마나 멀리 떨어져 있는지 알 수가 없고 더 나아가서 학습 중에 스스로 교정을 해 나가는 시스템을 개발하기가 기술적으로 어려운 단점이 있다. 이를 극복하기 위해 본 논문에서는 음성 간의 상대적 거리를 토대로 음성을 시각화하는 모델을 제시하고, 이를 한국어 모음에 적용하여 모음의 음성적 특징을 이용한 시각화의 구체적인 구현 방법을 제시한다. 음성데이터에서 F1, F2, F3의 세 개의 포먼트를 구하고 이들 특징벡터를 코호넨 자기조직화맵 알고리즘으로 2차원 화면에 사상하여 각 음성을 화면 위의 각 점에 대응하여 표현하였다. 제안하는 시스템의 실제적인 구현은 인터넷에 공개된 음성처리 공개소프트웨어를 사용하고 한국인 교사의 표준 발음과 한국어를 배우고 있는 외국인 유학생의 음성을 이용하여 음성특징의 상호간 거리를 구하였으며, 사용자 인터페이스는 자바스크립트를 이용하여 구현하였다.
