Association between Obesity and Self-Rated Health in Korean Males and Females (우리나라 성인 남녀의 비만이 주관적 건강상태 지각에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of obesity on self-rated health in Korean males and females. Methods: The 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-1) data were used. Participants included 1,231 males and 1,289 females aged 20 years or older and had no disease. Chi-square test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression with dummy variables using SAS 9.2 were performed. Results: From univariate analysis, total body fat was significantly greater in males with a self-perception of poor health (p=.006), and the percentage of total body fat was significantly greater in males and females with a self-perception of poor health (p for all=.001). After controlling for demographic and health behavior variables, similar results were found. Females with higher education had a healthy perception of their health. Smoking for males and drinking for females were significantly related to unhealthy perception of their health. Conclusion: The current study provides evidence that obese Korean males and females had worse self-rated health, even though they had no disease. In particular, it is important to note that the relatively direct obesity measures from Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, such as total body fat and percentage of body fat, were significantly related to self-rated health.

  • The effects of sex and age on the serum transaminase activity of 57 healthy Korean cattle (22 females and 35 males) were observed. Serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT) activity of the female revealed significantly higher value than that of the males. In the females, SGOT activity of 4 and 5 years group was a little decreased than 2 and 3 years, but difference was not recognized. On the other hand, SGOT activity of 4 and 5 years showed high significant increase as compared with that of 2 and 3 years in the males. The effects of sex and age on serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) activity and total protein levels were not found.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of age and gender on the value of electroretinogram (ERG) in healthy dogs. The ERG responses of 68 eyes of 34 dogs (22 males, 12 females) were recorded following the diagnostic protocol for dogs recommended by International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision under general anesthesia using medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam combination. There were significant differences in the implicit time of a-wave of Hi-int R & C response among age groups (P < 0.05) and in the implicit time of a-wave of cone response between male and female (P < 0.05). The rest ERG responses seem to be not affected by age and gender of healthy dogs.

  • Failure Renal is the function of the kidneys to remove waste products and keep them on the periphery. and minerals for the body. Chronic renal failure is a syndrome characterized by a slow, irreversible deterioration of renal function due to the slow destruction of renal parenchyma. Calcium is one of the important minerals that the body contains in the blood and important tissues, and it has an important role in vital processes such as muscle contraction, nerve impulse conduction, the efficiency of heart muscle work, and blood clotting processes. The aim of the study is to study and compare calcium levels in men and women. It includes studying abnormal levels of calcium that cause many diseases, including chronic renal failure, and studying changes associated with renal failure. The method of this study was conducted on patients with chronic renal failure at Murjan Teaching Hospital in Babylon city during the period. The study included a sample of 70 patients (40 males, 30 females) with chronic renal failure, their ages ranged from 30-65, and 60 (30 males, 30 females) healthy without the disease of the same age. The result was a significant decrease in the number of red and white blood cells, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and platelets in patients with chronic renal failure, The result has been showed significant level in enzymes activity for transfer of amine group (alanine amino transferase, aspartate amino transferas) and phosphatase alkaline and also concentration of total bilirubin in patient with compare with healthy, Significantly increases, were found in the concentration of urea, uric acid and creatinine, as well as the concentration of calcium and phosphorous ions in the blood serum of patients compared to healthy controls.

  • Objective: To investigate the association of genetic background between MTHFR C677T genotype and infertile females with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Materials and Methods: We compared 86 infertile females with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with 100 healthy fertile females with one or more offspring. Pyrosequencing analysis for MTHFR C677T variation was performed on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product of study group. To validate pyrosequencing data of C677T variation for randomly selected 50 samples, we compared the pyrosequencing result with the PCR-RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) result of MTHFR C677T genotype. Results: The prevalence of the C677T mutant homozygous (TT) was significantly lower (p=0.0085) in females with PCOS (8.14%) than in fertile females (21.00%). MTHFR 677 TT genotype had a decreased risk (3.7-fold) of PCOS compared with wild type (MTHFR 677 CC). Conclusion: Our data support a role for MTHFR mutant homozygous (677 TT) genotype in reducing risk in Korean infertile females with Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Influence of Healthy Image on Preference and Intake of Vegetables (채소 식품의 건강 이미지가 기호와 섭취에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of image on the preference and intake frequency of 19 vegetables. A total of 359 usable surveys were collected using a convenient sampling method. The subjects included females (51.8%), university students (50.7%), home residents (66.9%) and subject's spending 20,000~40,000 won on meals/week (41.5%) and eat out 2~3 times/week (29.5%). The intake frequency of vegetables was 2~3 times per month. The healthy image of all vegetables was good overall and the average preference was 3.78 (out of 5 on the Likert). Tomatoes had the healthiest image, onions the highest preference, and Korean cabbage the highest intake frequency. For males, the vegetable with the healthiest image was sesame leaf, while the healthiest foods for females were broccoli and tomatoes. Elementary students had a healthier image of cucumber, bean sprouts, radish, sesame leaf, lettuce, radish leaf, and cabbage than university students and adults. Home residents had a healthier image of cabbage and burdock than other types of residents. Subject that st over 20,000 won per week on meals had a higher image of most vegetables. In terms of preference, males liked Korean cabbage, green pumpkin, balloon flower roots, radish leaf, and lotus root, but female liked tomatoes. In addition, elementary students, home residents, and subjects who eat out less often tended to prefer vegetables. In terms of intake, there was a high frequency of intake for all vegetables in adults. Home residents specifically had a higher intake of cucumber, carrot, bean sprouts, spinach, green pumpkin, balloon flower roots, lettuce, radish leaf, broccoli, burdock, lotus root, and tomato. Overall, the healthy image of vegetables had a positive influence on their preference and intake frequency. Therefore, to encourage the intake of vegetables, direct or indirect variables should be examined.

Assessment of Isokinetic Muscle Strength in the Knee Extensor Through the Ankle Joint Angles (발목관절 각도에 따른 무릎 폄근의 등속성 근력 평가)

  • Purpose:This study was designed to investigate difference in isokinetic muscle strength in the knee extensor muscle and characteristic differences in muscle strength between males and females through the ankle joint angles. Methods: Seventy-four subjects participated in this study. There were two groups: 36 males and 38 females. The mean age of the men was 24.58 years and women was 23.74 years. Subjects were seated on a CON-TREX LP (leg press) lean to back of chair, and there bodies were fixed by straps with the hip joint at an angle of $130^{\circ}$. After randomly fixing the ankle joint at $0^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $40^{\circ}$ of plantar flexion (PF) in range of full extension of knee joint. We studied force max average, force max average/kg, power average, and total work through the angle of the ankle joint when the knee joint was extended from $90^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$. Results: In the male group, all maximum measured value showed at the ankle joint $0^{\circ}$, all minimum measured value showed at $40^{\circ}$ PF (p<0.01). In the female group, all maximum measured value showed at the ankle joint $20^{\circ}$ PF, especially the power average increased significantly. All minimum measured value showed $40^{\circ}$ PF (p<0.01). Conclusion: There are differences between males and females in isokinetic muscle strength of the knee extensor through ankle joint angles in healthy adults. Males and Females have different characteristics of muscle strength through the ankle joint angles.

Comparison of the Changes in the Activation of the Quadriceps Muscle based on the Plantar Flexion Degree of the Ankle Joint in Healthy Young Females during the Stand-to-Sit movement

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in the muscle activation of the quadriceps muscle (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis) during the stand-to-sit (StandTS) movement according to the plantar flexion angle of the ankle joint. Methods: A total of 22 healthy young females participated in this study. During the StandTS under the three conditions (plantarflexion angle 0°, 20°, and 45° of the ankle), electromyography (EMG) data (% maximum voluntary iso¬metric contraction) of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis were recorded using a wireless surface EMG system. Results: There was a significant difference in the muscle activation of rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis according to the plantar flexion angle (0°, 20°, and 45°) of the ankle. The muscle activation of the quadriceps was the highest at a 45° angle of plantarflexion and the lowest at 0°. One-way repeated ANOVA was used to analyze the muscle activation data of the lower extremity muscles according to the angle of the ankle joint. Conclusion: Based on the results of our study, it was confirmed that the muscle activity of the quadriceps can be increased even in the StandTS movement, which involves the eccentric contraction of the quadriceps muscle. This suggests that maintaining a plantar flexion posture for a long time, say by wearing high-heeled shoes, can quickly cause muscle fatigue in the lower-limb muscles, which can cause a decrease in balance ability leading to falls.

Cerebral Blood Flow as Measured by TCD in Hyperlipidemic Group (TCD를 이용한 정상군과 고지혈증군의 혈류측정에 관한 비교연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare cerebral blood flow between hyperlipidemic patient group and normal healthy aldult group using transcranial doppler ultrasonography(TCD). I investigated cerebral blood flow of 63 hyperlipidemic patients and 42 healthy adults. To evaluate the cerebral blood flow, I measured the systolic peak velocity(Vs) and mean flow velocity(Vm) of the milddle cerebral artery(MCA), anterior cerebral artery(ACA), posterior cerebral artery(PCA), basilar artery(BA), internal carotid artery(ICA) in the two groups using TCD. In normal healthy adults, subjects showed a decerease in Vs and Vm with advancing in age. There was a significant difference in the Vm of ICA. There was no significant differences in the Vm of ACA and ICA. In normal healthy adults, females showed high velocities of all examined vessel. There was a significant difference in the Vs of ICA. There was a significant differences in the Vm of MCA and ICA. Normal healthy adults higher than hyperlipidemic patients in the Vs of MCA, ACA, PCA. There was no significant difference in the Vs of all exmined vessels. Hyperlipidemic patientsincrease higher than normal healthy adults in the Vm of ACA. There was a significant difference in the Vs of BA. In the patients aged under 50's, normal healthy adults higher than hyperlipidemic patients in the Vs and Vm except BA. But there was no significant difference in all exmined vessels. In the patients aged over 50's, hyperlipidemic patients higher than normal healthy adults in all examined vessel expect PCA. There was a significant difference in the Vs of BA and ICA. And hyperlipidemic patients higher than that normal healthy adults in all exmined vessels. There was a significant difference in BA and ICA. In this study, visible differences in blood flow between hyperlipidemic patient group and normal healthy aldult group were shown. However, these results do not come up to the previous values that were reported and known worldwide.
