  • Purpose: As the concerns for the environment are gradually prioritized, increasing interests of environment-friendly buildings are drawn. The Green Standard for Energy & Environmental Design (G-SEED) has been strengthened. However, there are no specific assessment criteria that reflect the special situation of healthcare facility. UK, US and Japan have green building certifications specially designed to evaluate sustainable healthcare facilities. This study has been started in order to provide basic information for developing assessment criteria for healthcare facilities in Korean Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design. Methods: In this study, we investigated three foreign green building certifications and compared their assessment system and criteria for healthcare buildings. Results: Each of the three foreign certification standards showed the difference in the system, but all contained the contents specific to healthcare facilities. Evaluation items were affected by regional cultural environment and also medical environment. Patient safety and integrative planning were the most important assessment contents. Implications: Based on this analysis, Korean Green Standard for Energy & Environmental Design for healthcare facilities will be developed.

  • As a result of rapid aging speed in our society, many problems related to elderly people have happened in many parts of our society. Among them, supply for elderly housing is one of the biggest problems. To solve these problems, 'long-term care insurance' has been put in operation from July 2008. By the time of the insurance operation, Ministry of Health and Welfare is increasing facilities every year according to '10-year expending plan of Care service infra' from 2002. As a result, the supply rate of elderly facilities has been raised. But the differences of facility supply rate between regions are very high in some cases. Therefore older people who need care sometimes cannot get proper care services in some areas. In that case, the frail older people have to use other care facilities of other regions. This is not a proper situation from the point of "Aging in Place". In order to prevent that case, it is necessary to set up proper 'Daily Living Spheres' and establish elderly care plan for it. Considering the points above, this study proposes the size of 'Daily Living Spheres' for the elderly, the kind and amount of elderly care facilities in it for the construction of Community Based Elderly Care System.

  • The analysis of outdoor and indoor spatial composition with natural elements is required for the creation of healing environment in healthcare facility to provide basic data for the planning of hospital architecture. Literature review of healing environment and investigation on characteristics of spatial composition in architectural works and healthcare facilities have been conducted. The spatial composition of outdoor space for refuge and prospect from indoor space of Seoul National University Hospital have been analyzed. The result of this research can be summarized as followed. First of all, the main natural elements for healing environment are consisted with refuge in outdoor space and prospect from indoor space. The second one is that natural elements in Seoul National University Hospital are located in central, posterior, and lateral area of main hospital and connectivity, integration, and ERAM(3) which the characteristics of outdoor spatial composition with space syntax are focused on the museum of medicine and landscape area in the center of hospital. The third one is that the outdoor refuge and prospect from indoor space in Seoul National University Hospital can be replaced with cultural heritage like the site of Kyungmogungji and Changgyeonggung palace in and next to the hospital. In addition to the outdoor and indoor spatial composition, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between elements to develop the healing environment of hospital architecture.

For this objective, the code and guideline were analysed, and based on the analysis the checklist was developed for field observation. Convenience facilities ought to consider various aspects like size, and spatial composition of facilities, safety factors. and the present conveniences facility regulation. The research was conducted for municipal buildings located in Jeonbuk province. The procedures for research was made to investigate the finding of architectural related code and faculty standards. The results of investigation should be complemented and clarified guidelines in terms of accessibility and convenience which in detail. If the disabled would be convenient to use municipal buildings facilities, there should be no difficulties. As a result, convenience facilities for disabled in the municipal buildings has been improved that the design concept for the disabled person in general architectural planning.

  • The purpose of healthcare facility should be user healing and health promotion. However, healthcare facilities have a bigger impact on the natural environment than the general buildings, eventually effecting the health of people globally. 'Environmentally friendliness' is a more important concept in hospitals, not just in technical or mechanical performance but in therapeutic effects on users. Therapeutic environment is closely related to the natural environment. Depending on how the natural environment is drawn into the space, the healing effect of the patients is also increased. Most of the previous studies are statistical and comparative researches that cannot provide theoretical basis of architectural planning. Therefore, architectural research on the composition of architectural space and nature is needed. In this study, we categorize 16 types of relation between architectural space and nature, and based on this, analyze the present situation of 7 regional public hospitals' 33 spaces, and provide theoretical background and guideline for therapeutic space.

  • Much has changed in the healthcare field since the beginning of the industrial age. In the healthcare field changes are occurring so rapidly and dramatically that yesterday's paradigm will not be tomorrow's paradigm, creating the need above all else to stay fluid and flexible as strategies(included healthcare architecture planning) for the future are developed. The purpose of this study is to analyze the latest architectural trends of general hospital outpatient department based on the healthcare environment changes in Korea. The major healthcare environment change is to change the object of hospital's healthcare services from inpatient to outpatient. In conclusion, the first, medical faculties of outpatient department are subdivided specialized small faculty. The second, clinic systems for medical examination and treatment of specific disease are activated in the most outpatient department. The third, specialized medical centers for chronical disease(Cancer, Cardiac etc.) control are arranged in existed outpatient department or freestanding facility. Specialized medical center for preventive medicine is regionally decentralized for corresponding with the healthcare paradigm shifts.

  • Considering the rapid growth of elderly population and the increase of medical demand for aged, many of geriatric hospitals are needed in Korea. On the other hand, supplies of hospitals for acute care are considered to be excessive. So many of small and medium hospitals facing management problems have been converged to geriatric hospitals. These attempts are considered resonable for efficient utilization of health care resources in Korea. This paper aims to identify the concept of geriatric hospital and to analyze the problems and then to seek the alternatives for architectural planning on the basis of surveying the geriatric hospitals converged from hospitals for acute care.
