Bioterrorism events have worldwide impacts, not only in terms of security and public health policy, but also in other related sectors. Many countries, including Korea, have set up new administrative and operational structures and adapted their preparedness and response plans in order to deal with new kinds of threats. Korea has dual surveillance systems for the early detection of bioterrorism. The first is syndromic surveillance that typically monitors non-specific clinical information that may indicate possible bioterrorism-associated diseases before specific diagnoses are made. The other is infectious disease specialist network that diagnoses and responds to specific illnesses caused by intentional release of biologic agents. Infectious disease physicians, clinical microbiologists, and infection control professionals play critical and complementary roles in these networks. Infectious disease specialists should develop practical and realistic response plans for their institutions in partnership with local and state health departments, in preparation for a real or suspected bioterrorism attack.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the current status and educational contents of the geriatric-related curriculum in dental hygiene departments at colleges across the country. Methods: To analyze the current status of geriatric curriculum, it was investigated by searching the websites of colleges across the country where dental hygiene (curriculum) department was available. Furthermore, a literature review of domestic and foreign textbooks related to geriatric dental hygiene was conducted to analyze the contents of geriatric dental hygiene curriculum. Results: Among colleges that offer dental hygiene (curriculum) department, 8 four-year and 12 three-year colleges (24.4%) offered geriatric dental hygiene courses. A comparison of the contents of the textbooks titled "Geriatric dental hygiene" published by Goonja, Daehan Narae, and Komoonsa showed that basic contents such as the characteristics, health problems, and oral health problems of elderly -people were described in the same context. However, there was a difference in the volume and importance of the concerned contents also. Conclusions: Universities and related organizations which offer dental hygiene curriculum should continue to conduct studies for the development of geriatric hygiene curricula. Moreover, heightened efforts are needed to ensure that geriatric dental hygiene education is more systematically offered.
This study investigated relationship between secondary electrons produced from single gold nanoparticle as a result of its interaction with radiation and particle size and incidence energy, provided basic data related to the dose enhancement effect based on gold nanoparticles. Monte Carlo simulation was applied by using MCNPX MC code, 50, 100, 150 kV and 6, 15 MV x-ray energy was used. In a water phantom, single gold nanoparticles that are 30, 50, 70, 90, and 110 nm in diameter were placed and the tally volume was designated at every 10 nm. Difference in electrons produced from gold nanoparticles was normalized based on absence of nanoparticle. When the X ray energy decreased and the diameter of gold particles increased, more electrons were produced. When the energy was lower, in the linear formula related to nanoparticle size and electron production, the gradient was higher. And, in comparison to the MV X-ray, at kV X-ray, significantly more electrons were produced. This study can be used as data to understand the dose enhancement effect based on gold nanoparticles, and further research related to various materials that dose enhancement including gold nanoparticles needs to be conducted.
Background: The economy is being lifted by the new concept of robotics, but we cannot be sure of all the possible benefits. At this early stage, it therefore becomes important to find out the possible benefits/limitations associated with robotics, so that the positives can be capitalized, established, and developed further for the employment and motivation of employees in the health care sector, for overall economic development. The negatives should also be further studied and mitigated. Methods: This study is an exploratory research, based on secondary data, such as books on topics related to robotics, websites, public websites of concerned departments for data and statistics, journals, newspapers and magazines, websites of health care providers, and different printed materials (brochures, etc). Results: The impact of robotics has both positive and negative impacts on the employment and motivation of employees in the retail sector. So far, there has been no substantial research done into robotics, especially in the health care sector. Conclusion: Replacing employees with robots is an inevitable choice for organizations in the service sector, more so in the health care sector because of the challenging and sometimes unhealthy working environments, but, at the same time, the researchers propose that it should be done in a manner that helps in improving the employment and motivation of employees in this sector.
This study was peformed to explore the current situation of university environmental health and safety (EHS) system and evaluate the effects of such system on university EHS practices. Essential elements for the university EHS system were identified based on the representative examples of foreign universities, and Hey were incorporated into a questionnaire, which was used in this study. Among the academic institutions we surveyed in this study, 89% of the universities employed health and safety manager, and 65% kept departments. However, less than 50% of universities maintained EHS policies, maintained health and established safety committees within the university headquarters, and held health and safety meetings on regular basis. Several basic requirements such as chemical hygiene program and laboratory safety training program lacked in many universities. Some basic surveillance was performed in many universities, however, only few universities carried out surveillance on biological safety, medical examination, and chemical exposure monitoring. EHS system had significant influence on university EHS program (p<0.05). Performances of EHS activities were influenced by presence of EHS policies, and university health and safety committees.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between health behavior and oral symptoms in Korean adolescents. Methods: The subjects were 72,060 adolescents who were selected from the web-based survey of the 10th (2014) Korean Youth Risk Behavior of Korean Center for Disease Control. Data were analyzed by PASW statistics 18.0. A web-based self-reported questionnaire was completed by 74,167 middle and high school students. The subjects consisted of 36,470 boy students (52.2%) and 35,590 girl students (47.8%) from 400 middle schools and 400 high schools. Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that experience of oral symptoms were related with sex, age, academic achievement, economic status, alcohol drinking, moderate physical activity, muscular strength exercises, walking, fruit consumption, milk consumption, fast food consumption, snack consumption, daily tooth brushing frequency, use of fluoride toothpaste, school based oral health education, dental sealant and dental scaling. Conclusions: There were close relationship between heath behavior, oral health behavior, and experience of oral symptoms. To improve the health promotion for the adolescents, oral health program development and primary prevention strategy must be established.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with perceived job satisfaction of TB control nurses in Korea. Methods: This study employed a descriptive survey research design using data for 189 TB control nurses. Variables included in this study were demographic, social, and work-related characteristics (including job stress), and job satisfaction. ANOVA, t-test,and multiple regression analyses were performed using SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: The mean value of perceived job satisfaction was lower in the subjects ($2.9{\pm}0.41$) than in general nurses working in other departments. In multiple regression analysis, factors associated with TB control nurses' job satisfaction were job stress (${\beta}$=-.281, p<.001), marital status (${\beta}$=-.229, p<.001), and the number of TB control nurses employed (${\beta}$=.200, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that job satisfaction was associated more significantly with job-related characteristics than with non-job-related variables in workplace. Along with increased TB control nurse staffing, efforts should be made to reduce negative work-place issues such as job stress and inappropriate pay to improve the subject's job satisfaction.
Purpose. This study was conducted in order to identify levels of stress and self-esteem related to clinical practices of dental hygiene department students. Methods. Data was collected from a group of 249 students from October to November 2015, in the Yeong-nam region. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics frequency and t-test, logistic regressions by a SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results. The results indicate that the characteristics of those who appeared to practice managing teaching was higher than that of the stress levels of clinical practice(p=.044). As well. personal relations(p=.013), degree of major satisfaction(p=.001), levels of satisfaction of practice(p=.019) resulted in higher levels of self esteem. The stress levels of clinical practice and high levels of satisfaction of practice were reduced and resulted in a dental hygienic negative correlation(p=.016). Self-esteem levels increased significantly according to personal relations(p=.001) and satisfaction of practice(p=.014). Conclusion. A strategy for development of a method to reduce the stress of clinical practice among individuals and an improvement of self-esteem programs which is necessary for dental hygiene students.
Radiologic technologists working at the second and third medical institutions are classified as radiation-related workers and radiation workers according to their working departments, and are subject to double regulation by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Nuclear Safety Commission. We will try to understand the system of dualization and to understand the investigation of recognition. The dualized system of radiation-related workers and radiation workers includes the difference in name and terminology, the effective dose limit, the maintenance education and training of radiologic technologists, the period of medical examination, the radiation zone, dose of the woman whose pregnancy is confirmed in radiologic technologists, the qualification criteria of the safety officer, and the period of the regular inspection of the radiological equipment. In the questionnaire survey on the dualization system, there were various items showing significant differences between the radiation-related workers and radiation workers Overall, the radiation workers were more aware of the radiation workers' education and related terms than the radiation-related workers.
Objective: This study was to investigate the relationship between hemoglobin A1c level and self-reported oral health status. Methods: The subjects of this study were 150 diabetic patients (60 male patients and 90 female patients) who went to the internal and family medicine departments of clinic. This study used the questionnaire and NYCOCARD$\square$ READERII to quantify hemoglobin A1c. Results: The proportion of well controlled diabetes subjects was 31.3%. When hemoglobin A1c levels became higher, subjects perceived that there were more decay teeth, bleeding, swollen gums, mobility teeth, and oral disease symptoms. In comparison with the well glycemic control group, poor glycemic control group perceived that the overall oral health status was worse, and had more bleeding teeth, swollen gums and mobility teeth. Conclusion: These results show that hemoglobin A1c level is related to the self-reported oral health status. Therefore, dental professionals should emphasize more the necessity of maintaining the hemoglobin A1c of normal range and monitoring it periodically, and the practice of thorough oral hygiene care in order to promote diabetic patients' oral health.
