Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess vision-related quality of life and modes of refractive error correction. We administered NEI-VFQ (National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire) to 137 subjects in two modes of refractive error correction: spectacles and contact lens wearers. The NEL-VFQ was developed to assess vision-related quality of life with respect to 1) visual symptoms 2) social function as well as difficulty with tasks and symptoms 3) economic issues and health concerns 4) psychological well-being. The NEL-VFQ was translated from English into Korean. Methods: All data were analyzed using SAS 8.0. Student's T-test was conducted to determine significant differences in each of the subscale (${\alpha}=0.05$). Result: The Peripheral Vision subscale score ($mean{\pm}SD$) was $52.2{\pm}32.7$ for the spectacle wearers, $88.6{\pm}18.1$ for contact lens wearers; the spectacle wearers' Peripheral Vision score was significantly lower than contact lens wearers (p=0.0001). There were also significant differences between two groups detected in Color Vision (p=0.001), General Vision (p=0.01) and Health Perception (p=0.01). Conclusion: Contact lens wearers and spectacle wearers were mostly high vision-related quality of life except General Vision and Health Perception. Especially, contact lens wearers were higher vision-related quality of life than spectacle wearers. Further studies on developing of good quality of contact lens will be needed to improve quality of life in ametropia.
Objectives: This study aims to identify the impact of subjectively reported oral health status on the quality of life by applying the PRECEDE model. Methods: This study was conducted on a total of 450 people who had dental visit experience among persons above 35 and under 65 years living in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces. Oral health-related quality of life was measured using the OHIP-14. The relationship between subjectively reported oral health status and the quality of life was evaluated by the chi-square test, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: OHIP-14 scores were significantly associated with self-reported oral health problem. Especially the strongest correlations were found between functional limitation, physical psychological social disability on the OHIP-14 7 sub-factor and self-reported periodontitis and dry mouth symptoms. Conclusion: Subjectively reported oral health status is associated with oral heath related quality of life. In order to improve people's the quality of life, taking care of their oral heath is indispensable factor. Therefore, it is required to revitalize regular oral health check system and the development of effective oral health education programs by the government to prevent periodontitis and dry mouth as well.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a rehabilitation nursing program(RNP) for persons with disabilities. Method: a quasi-experimental pretest and post test study was used to examine the changes of patient's muscle strength, flexibility, self efficacy and health related quality of life at the completion of an 8-week education and physical exercise with a Thera-Band and Exercise Ball course. The subjects consisted of 40 adults who were disabled. Twenty-two experimental and 18 control subjects completed pre and post-test measures. Outcome variables were flexibility, hand grip, elbow flexor and extensor, knee flexor and extensor, self efficacy and quality of life. Independent t-test and ANCOVA were used to examine group differences by using SPSS 12.0 Result: Mean comparisons of the change scores revealed that the experimental group increased significantly in knee extremity flexor(p=0.035), extensor(p=0.039), flexibility(p=0.008), self efficacy(p=0.000), and quality of life(p=0.000). No significant group differences were found in each patient's hand grip, elbow flexor and extensor. Conclusion: RNP can improve lower extremity flexibility, muscle strength, self efficacy and health related quality of life in people with disabilities. The intervention to tailor exercise and education to the unique needs of the disability was suggested for further study.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of stretching, muscle strengthening, and walking exercise on the cardiopulmonary function and health-related quality of life in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Twenty-one patients in the intervention and the control group participated in the exercise respectively on maintenance hemodialysis at four university hospitals. The exercise was composed of 20 to 60 min per session, 3 sessions a week for 12 weeks. The effect of exercise was assessed by cardiopulmonary function (peak oxygen uptake, peak ventilation, peak respiration rate, maximal heart rate, and exercise duration) using a cycle ergometer. Grip strength was measured by dynamometer, and flexibility was measured by sit and reach measuring instrument. Health-related quality of life was measured using Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36. Results: Peak oxygen uptake, peak ventilation, peak respiration rate, exercise duration, grip strength, flexibility, and physical component scale were significantly improved in the intervention group after 12 week's exercise compared to the control group. Conclusion: These findings indicate the exercise can improve cardiopulmonary function, grip strength, flexibility, and physical component scale of health-related quality of life in hemodialysis patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on mental health related quality of life (MHRQoL) in adults across the lifespan. Methods: A total of 688 Korean adults aged 19 years and older were selected. Data were collected by personal interviews or self report using structured questionnaires. For data analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression were used. Results: Mental health related quality of life (MHRQoL) differed significantly according to life cycle, especially showing a lower score in the elderly than others. In addition, elderly adulthood reported the highest stress and depression. The most significant predictors of MHRQoL in young and middle aged people were stress, depression, and subjective health status. Predictors of MHQoL in the elderly were stress and religion. Conclusion: The results indicate that MHRQoL of adult is associated with stress and depression. When the programs are developed to enhance mental health in elderly adulthood, religion should be considered as well as stress.

The goals of this study were to investigate depression and oral health-related quality of life in the military and public and to identify the factors affecting depression. The respondents were 278 soldiers and 228 general people of similar ages. An independent t-test was used to examine the differences between the two groups in the oral health impact profile and Self-rating Depression Scale. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with depression in soldiers and the public. The depression level was significantly higher in the general population than in the military personnel (p<0.001). In contrast, the oral health-related quality of life was better in the general population than in the military, but without a statistical significance (p=0.056). Among soldiers, the military rank was the only factor associated with depression, showing a gradient based on the rank. In the general population, the type of work displayed significant associations with depression. As there are some limitations to investigating the factors affecting depression, comparative analyses of the general population groups with similar soldier groups are rare. This study encourages future investigations of the advancements in mental health and improvement programs for oral health in each group.

Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to examine factors contributing the quality of life related to oral heath such as level of oral health knowledge, subjective knowledge on oral health, awareness of oral health and OHIP-14, and furthermore to analyze any relations among these factors. Methods: The questionnaire survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 230 middle school students at the selected middle school in Chungcheongnam-do. T-test and one-way ANOVA and correlation test were conducted over the collected datas using SPSS 12.0(SPSS 12.0 KOR for Windows, SPSS Inc, Chicago, USA). Results: The results of the study are as follows: 1. 6.38 was average score for oral health knowledge and 10.0 was the maximum. Subjective oral health awareness scored of average 2.99 with maximum of 5.0. OHIP-14 corresponded to average 4.30 and maximum 5.0. 2. Different level of oral heath knowledge was resulted from that of education, which means the greater level of oral health knowledge indicated greater awareness of oral health. 3. OHIP-14 was higher for those who lived with their parents than those who in did not(P=0.012). 4. There exhibits a proportional relationship between subjective awareness of oral health and OHIP-14(r=0.297). Conclusion: It was found that subjective awareness of oral health partially influences to OHIP-14. In other words, subjective awareness of oral health has an effect on the quality of life related to oral health. Hence, there needs more effort on oral health education and oral disorder prevention activities in order to improve subjective awareness of oral health.
