Objectives : This study is aimed to seek how to promote oral health care by leading the clients with dental fears to change their behaviors in oral hygiene care based on the analysis of the relationships between the dental fears and oral health care behaviors of the clients who visit the Dental Hygiene Education Room. Methods : This study analyzed the 361 dental hygiene records of the subjects with finished treatment and accurate records among a total of 370 clients who had received dental hygiene care at the Dental Hygiene clinic in Y University from March 2007 till June 2009. According to their general features, the study analyzed whether they had any dental fears and why such fears occurred and conducted Chi-square test to compare their oral hygiene care experiences and behaviors with dental fears. Data analysis was made using the SPSS 12.0K for Window, with level of significance set at 0.05. Results : 1. In terms of dental fear or non-fear, the comparison by gender showed that women had a higher level than men, with 76 women(47.2%) answering yes; the comparison by age showed that the age group of 30 years old or older had a higher level than other groups. 2. In terms of dental fear reasons, "the past pain experiences" recorded 34.2%, showing the highest rate. 3. In addition, dental fears had influences on regular dental examination, scaling and dental hygiene education and the subjects without dental fear showed higher levels in terms of tooth-brushing frequency and time. Conclusions : To control "the past pain experiences", future dental treatment should place priority on preventive treatment and get clients to cope with pains through the preliminary education with pains. Besides, to make an effective oral health care of the clients with dental fears, dental hygienists should control the fears of the clients and perform an appropriate oral health care for them using the communication techniques to make friendly and trustworthy impressions.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between participation in physical activities (PA) and subjective well-being. Methods: We analyzed the data from Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, 2013 containing 36,655 and 35,780 for male and female students respectively. Study variables included PA, participation in physical education class, participation in team sports and subjective well-being. Control variables were school type, socio-economic status, level of parent education, living with parent, academic performance, delinquent behaviors, depression and perceived health. For this study, descriptive analysis, Chi-square test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: Among boys, after adjusting for control variables, PA (past 7 days 0 time reference group vs. over 4 times: OR 1.306), physical education class (past 7 days 0 time reference group vs. over 3 times: OR 1.140), and team sports (no team reference group vs. 2 team: OR 1.206) were associated with subjective well-being. Among girls, control variables were adjusted. PA (past 7 days 0 time reference group vs over 4 times: OR 1.244), physical education class (past 7 days 0 time reference group vs. over 3 times: OR 1.161), and team sports (no team reference group vs. 2 team: OR 1.181) were associated with subjective well-being. Conclusions: Participation in physical activities may help adolescent promote their life satisfaction. Thus, education experts should develop various exercise curriculums to encourage participation in physical activities.
Undernutrition could be a significant deterrent to healthy aging and could negatively affect health outcomes in elderly. This study aimed to assess health-related factors which are associated with nutritional risks in middle-aged and elderly individuals by a cross-sectional study. Interviews were conducted with 2660 subjects (847 males, 1813 females), aged 50 years and over, in 15 cities in Korea. Data on food intake were obtained through a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires. Nutritional status were analyzed according to health-related factors including cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, exercise, stress and depression level. Less regular exercise was associated with a higher likelihood of a poor nutrition [odds ratio (OR) 1.94; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.43-2.65] of middle-aged and elderly male subjects. Cigarette smoking (OR 1.84; 95% CI 1.24-2.71), less exercise (OR 2.58; 95% CI 2.07-3.21), stress (OR 1.73; 95% CI 1.36-2.22), and depression (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.08-1.67) of middle-aged and elderly female subjects was associated with a higher likelihood of a poor nutrition. The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that less exercise proved to be the strongest predictors for the poor nutrition, followed by stress, smoking, and depression (model $R^2= 9.0%$). It suggests that guidance to promote regular exercise, to quit smoking, to minimize stress and depression level might help to improve nutritional status of middle-aged and elderly in Korea. These findings also suggest that having recommendable health behaviors are beneficial to the good nutrition of subjects aged 50 years and over.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct and test a structural equation model of self-management of liver transplant recipients based on self-determination theory. Methods: Participants were 275 outpatients who received liver transplantation. A structured self-report questionnaire was used to assess health care providers' autonomy support, transplant-related characteristics, illness consequence perception, autonomy, competence, family relatedness, depression and self-management. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 program. Results: The modified model showed a good fitness with the data: GFI=.96, RMSEA=.06, CFI=.96, NFI=.93, TLI=.93, PGFI=.43, PNFI=.49. The health care providers' autonomy support, competence, family relatedness and depression were factors with a direct influence on the self-management of liver transplant recipients. The health care providers' autonomy support and illness consequence perception had an indirect influence through competence, family relatedness and depression. However, the transplant-related characteristics and autonomy did not have a significant effect on self-management. This model explained 59.4% of the variance in self-management. Conclusion: The result suggests that continuous education must be done to promote the competence of liver transplant recipients and to encourage the patient to positively perceive their current health condition with a view that enhances one's self-management. Additionally, the liver transplant recipients should be screened for depression, which would affect self-management. Most of all, health care providers, who have the most influence on self-management, should improve therapeutic communication and try to form a therapeutic relationship with the liver transplant recipients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the experiences of depression, suicidal thoughts, and habitual drug use in middle and high school students and examine their relationship with the oral symptoms experiences. Methods: The participants of this study were 54,948 middle and high school students who took the screening and health survey at the 16th "Youth Health Behavior Survey" (2020). The SPSS statistical software (IBM SPSS 23.0 for Windows; IBM) was used for data analysis. The significance level was set to 0.05. Results: Complex-sample logistic regression analysis was performed to confirm the relationship between the experiences of depression, suicidal thoughts, and habitual drug use and oral symptom experienced. The results indicated that the absence of depression, suicidal thoughts, or habitual drugs had a significant effect on oral symptom experience. Conclusion: A systematic counseling program for early detection of oral symptoms and oral health promotion as well as strategies for practicing correct oral hygiene are required. Additionally, it is necessary to develop a customized education program to promote health education in middle and high school students. It can be used as the basis for an integrated support system that students can use to grow healthy. A differentiated program on the topic of mental health promotion for each grade can be planned and its effects can be monitored.
Low energy intakes, poor nutritional quality, and low food diversity are among the factors affecting the nutritional status of elderly in Korea. Therefore, a nutrition counseling and education program was conducted to promote dietary change and to improve nutritional status of elderly. The 7 step program consisted of a individual nutrition counseling and weekly or biweekly group nutrition education programs. Pre- and post-test measurings of dietary behaviors, attitudes, nutrition knowledge, and 24-hour dietary recall data were collected. Positive changes in the attitude related to diet were noted, whereas nutritional knowledge scores were not improved. Significant increases were noted in the frequency of vegetable consumption in female and diversity of food consumption in male. The densities of vitamin C(male & female), $B_1$, $B_2$, and niacin, calculated using the INQ(Index of Nutritional Quality), were significantly improved by nutrition counseling and education programs. These results suggest the appropriateness of nutrition intervention programs for the improvement of elderly nutrition.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate internet addiction among middle school students and to examine the mediating effects of social support in the relationships of self-efficacy and self-control with internet addiction. Methods: The participants in the study were 119 middle school students in J city. The measurements included a self-efficacy scale, a self-control scale, a social support scale, and the Internet Addiction Scale for Youth. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple-regression using SPSS version 22.0. Mediation effects were analyzed by the Sobel test and Baron and Kenny's hierarchical analysis technique. Results: Significant correlations were found among self-efficacy, self-control, and internet addiction. Social support had partial mediating effects in the relationship between self-efficacy and internet addiction, as well as in the relationship between self-control and internet addition. Conclusion: In order to prevent internet addiction, the promotion of interactions among peers, which is a component of social support, is particularly important. It is also necessary to promote face-to-face activities that can strengthen relationships. The findings suggest that intensifying social support may help reduce the level of internet addiction in middle school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of hypertension and its risk factors among community dwelling aged 65 and over in South Korea. Methods: A total of 1,367 subjects from the 2010 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were selected. The data analysis was conducted by SPSS WIN 19.0 using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$-test, and logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of hypertension was found to be 47.70%. Logistic regression analysis shows that hypertension was more prevalent as people became older; in females; in elderly who were not employed as compared to those employed; elderly with diabetes, and obesity as compared to those without these health conditions; as elderly who performed more moderate intensity exercise. While, education, household income, high risk alcoholic drinking, smoking, stress perception, usual activity, and eating out behavior were not associated with prevalence of hypertension in this study. Conclusion: The finding of prevalence of hypertension and its risk factors is expected to promote the screening or prevention strategy for community dwelling aged 65 and over at risk of hypertension in Korea.
This descriptive study was conducted to explore the mothers' perceived temperament of their preschoolers, and its related factors. Survey from 212 mothers of preschoolers residing in Seoul, Daejeon, and Suwon was performed, and Schaefer's MBRI(Maternal Behavior Research Instrument), and PTQ(Parent Temperament Questionnaire) by Thomas and Chess, Child-rearing burden instrument by Han were used to collect data from September 15 to October 31, 2002. Data was analyzed with SPSS 10.0 Win program. Summaries of results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in temperament type-easy or difficult child-depending upon the demographic characteristics. 2. In temperament subscale, boys showed higher activity level than girls, and in working mothers group, adaptability was significantly lower although mood was higher. Preschoolers with expanded families were higher in activity level and intensity of reaction than with nuclear families. 3. Approach-withdrawal, adaptability, and mood showed significant negative relationship with maternal childrearing burden. 4. Temperament showed significant positive or negative relationship with maternal childrearing attitudes. In conclusion, it determined preschoolers' temperament was affected by primary environment such as maternal attitude, childrearing burden, and family type as well as children's gender. It was suggested that parent education and counselling program in nursing would be needed to promote children's desirable temperament.
Aim: The purpose of this paper is to present the importance of multidisciplinary strategies in cancer prevention and control, especially comprehensive breast cancer care. Background: Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Although the incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries is still lower than in Western countries, the rate of increase for the last two decades is striking. Methods: Data on cancer mortality, incidence, and risk factors were summarized by using the most recent data available from population-based cancer registries affiliated with the International Union Against Cancer, the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and the CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). Results: Global differences in breast cancer incidence and fluctuations in rates within a country still exist. The incidence of breast cancer in Asian countries was lower than in Western countries. Breast cancer incidence in the United States decreased each year during 1999-2003. On the other hand, morbidity and mortality related to breast cancer in Asia has increased significantly. Conclusion: Multidisciplinary strategies to reduce breast cancer mortality and promote breast cancer awareness are addressed. Lessons learned from multidisciplinary approaches to cancer treatment and control will be valuable in implementing future breast cancer research in the fields of basic, clinical, and population research in Asia.
