Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that have influence on a health examination among the middle aged living in Busan. Method: The survey was conducted with 235 participants who were the parents of students of five nursing schools in Busan, living in Busan, and subjects to a health examination under the National Health Insurance Corporation. The data was collected from September to November 2004 using a structured self-administered questionnaire that contained general characteristics, characteristics related to a health examination, and health belief variables. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 10.0. Results: Among the subjects, 122(51.9%) had performed a health examination in the past, and 113(48.1%) had not. Variables that have a significant influence on getting a health examination were: previous disease experience, perceived barrier and perceived seriousness. Those who did not have previous disease experience(2.6 times) and whose perceived seriousness was high(1.1 times) were more likely to have a health examination, and those with perceived barrier high(0.9 times) were less likely. Conclusion: Therefore, to increase the rate of health examinations, it is necessary to advertise the importance of health examinations particularly for the people who had disease experience and the seriousness of target diseases; and furthermore, to remove barriers of a health examination.

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between vertical trust in the healthcare system and participation in routine health examinations. Method: Data from the 2008 Pusan Health Survey were analyzed for this study. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the influence of possible confounders (sex, age, education, monthly mean household income, horizontal trust) on participation in routine health examinations according to trust in the healthcare system. Result: In a total sample of 7,683 participants, 3,756 (48.9%) were classified as health examination participants. Respondents with high trust in the healthcare system had significantly higher odds ratios of participation, 1.17 (95% CI 1.03-1.33), after multiple adjustments. Conclusion: Vertical trust in the healthcare system was significantly associated with higher odds of participation in routine health examinations. Improvements to the healthcare system have potential for increasing participation in routine health examinations.
The purpose of this study was to identify the status of health management from Dec 5, 1992 to March 10, 1993. The data. was. collected from 30 industrial nurses, through a structured questionnaire. The results were as follows : 1. 1.50%. of the companies surveyed were manufacturing companies, 24% of them were research center. 2. The sizes of the companies were as follows: 300-499 employees 11(37%). more than 1,000 employees 4(13%). 3. 18 companies(60%) had organized safety and health committees. 4. 25 companies(83%) had there own health clinics. 5. 60% of companies had a Health center assigned as were hospitals 83%. 6. Practical nurses were employed by all industries, 10 companies had their own physicians, and 3 had their own industrial hygienist. 7. The primary health examination rate was 96% and workers who took follow up examinations were 8.5% out of them, 73.6% were evaluated at the C & D grade. Follow Up management to D. evaluations was performed about 50%. 8. 13 personnel(43%) required, special examinations. 9. The relation between the workers health score and the health status, score was negative and not significant. Therefore the better health management the higher health level score.
The purpose of this study was to select the manageable diseases which are prevalent in Korea for periodic health examinations and to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of periodic health examination in detecting these diseases. The data was derived from reimbursement data of the Korea Medical Insurance Corporation over a two year period (April 15, 1986 to April 14,1988) and interviews with Yonsei Medical School professors. This study demonstrated that: 1. The manageable diseases which were selected for periodic health examinations are pulmonary tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, diabetes mellitus, syphilis groups, essential hypertension, renal disease groups, and iron deficiency anemia. 2. The sensitivity of the health screening for each disease was as follows: pulmonary tuberculosis 51.5%, viral hepatitis 60.3%, diabetes mellitus 64.7%, syphilis groups 63.3%, essential hypertension 49.9%, renal disease groups 44.0%, and iron deficiency anemia 80.9%. We conclude that peiodic health esaminations should focus on the manageable diseases that we have defined. The number of items in periodic health screening tests and hospital quality control should be increased for the diseases with a demonstrated low sensitivity.
Objectives : This study describes the current state of medical advertisement and quality of advertisement execution according to the different departments based on 2-year case study of actual medical advertisements which were published in newspapers. Additionally, this paper provides data which will help in the efficient planning of medical advertisements. Methods : This study was based on medical advertisements that were in local newspapers, etc. from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2013. The data were collected from September 20, 2014 to November 2, 2014 (44 days). A total of 4,991 data points were acquired from newspapers supplied by the Busan Public Library directly to the researcher. Results : According to the major findings of this study, the services of clinics had more medical advertisements than that of hospitals. Urology was the most advertised service of clinics while orthopedics and neurosurgery were the most advertised services of hospitals. Conclusions : In the study, the characteristics for the technical advertising factor was evident according to the type of examinations. Some types of examinations showed definite differences compared to other examinations.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of breastfeeding on the occurrence of early childhood caries in Korean infants and toddlers. Methods: Data on oral examinations of infants and toddlers of the National Health Insurance Service were analyzed. The study subjects were children who participated in both the first, second, and third oral examinations and the first general health examination in 2008-2017 (n=142,185). Based on the responses to the questionnaire, the subjects were classified into breastfeeding, formula feeding, and mixed feeding groups. The participants were monitored for the development of early childhood caries in three sequential oral examinations. Results: Based on the oral examination results conducted at 54-65 months old, the decayed-filled teeth index of the breastfeeding group was the highest (2.03±3.08), followed by the mixed (1.96±3.03) and the formula feeding groups (1.82±2.91). The Cox proportional hazard regression model including all the variables showed that the risk of developing dental caries was significantly lower in the formula (hazard ratio [HR], 0.85) and mixed feeding groups (HR, 0.91) than in the breastfeeding group. Conclusions: Breastfeeding children have a higher risk of early childhood caries; therefore, oral hygiene education and regular dental check-ups are necessary.
The National Health Insurance Act, the Industrial Health Act and the School Health Act require chest radiography at least once a year. In chest radiographic examination, most group examinations use indirect X-ray primarily aiming at diagnosing diseases and enhancing people's health. This study purposed to minimize radiation exposure dose by comparing it between direct and indirect chest X-ray studies. According to the result of comparing and analyzing radiation exposure dose, the average incident dose and penetrating dose were 0.929μGy and 0.179μGy respectively in direct chest X-ray and 6.807μGy and 1.337μGy in indirect chest X-ray In order to minimize radiation exposure dose at direct and indirect chest X-ray, indirect X-ray should be excluded from group examination if possible. Moreover, it is necessary to control the quality of equipment (Q/A & Q/C) systematically and to avoid using unqualified equipment in order to reduce radiation exposure dose.
This study was conducted to evaluate the health hazards and to develop early diagnostic methods of the manganism in experienced welders and to know the meaning of signal intensities on the brain Magnetic Resonance images. It was carried out from December 1996 to february 1997 with 277 male welders, the duration of welding was at least 5 years or more. The study was consisted of a questionnaire, physical examination and measurements of blood & urine manganese concentrations. Brain Magnetic Resonance imaging was done on 19 study subjects by random sampling. As the duration of welding increases, the positive rates of clinical symptoms, neurological examinations and blood manganese concentrations were also increased. However, physical examinations and urine manganese concentrations were not statistically significant with the duration of welding. Authors couldn't observe any Parkinsonism-like diseases. There were statistically significant correlations between duration of welding and blood manganese concentration(r=0.16, p<0.01). There were not statistically significant correlations between duration of welding and urine manganese concentrations (r=0.06). There were statistically significant correlations between blood & urine manganese concentration(r=0.34, p<0.01). By viewing brain Magnetic Resonance images, 13 welders(68.4 %) among 19 welders were found to have signal intensities. The positive rates of clinical symptoms, physical examinations, neurological examinations and blood & urine manganese concentrations were not statistically different between those with signal intensities and those without signal intensities. We would like to suggest that some non-specific clinical symptoms and neurological signs are correlated with the duration of welding but any Parkinsonism-like diseases had not been observed with these welders. Next we suggest that the high signal intensities on TlWI of brain Magnetic Resonance images are not the sign of manganese intoxication but the sign of manganese deposition.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the education, certification system, and extent of duty of dental hygienist between Korea and five developed countries including United States, Canada, England, Australia, and Japan. Methods : Internet based access to five developed countries was made and the analysis was done for the definition of occupation, main duties, similar occupations, education policy, job descriptions, license certification system, standards of duty, Q & A management, current status of obtaining certification, and scope of work. Results : United States has a two-year associate degree(AS) and a four-year bachelor degree(BS). Canada has two to three years degree and a two-year course is accepted in england and Australia. In the meanwhile, Korea and Japan have two-year and four-year educational courses. The duty of dental hygienists includes the prevention education for dental health and continuing dental health care. Most of the dental hygienists in Korea and Japan play the assistant roles for the dental surgeons. United States has national board examinations including written examinations, practical examinations, and computer assisted examination. Written and practical examinations are also conducted in Korea. England and Australia have the recognized educational organizations for qualification. Conclusions : Problem based and problem solving skills are the most important in dental hygienist education in Korea. The training of highly competent dental hygienists must be done for the improvement of dental hygiene in Korea in the near future.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis (EMI. %BF and WHR) and results of other oriental health examinations (QSCC II, HRV and APG) on some women. Methods: 114 women who were tested by oriental health examination between May 2006 and August 2008 were studied. Results: As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and sasang constitution, it was found that each of them had significant differences among themselves and Taeumin had the highest significance than other sasang constitution. As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and HRV, it was discovered that there was no significant relationship between BMI and WHR and HRV. However, %BF had negative correlations with autonomic activity, stress resistance and stress index. As a result of the study on the relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and APG, it was found that they had positive correlations with each other. Conclusion: In conclusion, there are significant relations between the index of obesity by body composition analysis and results of other oriental health examinations.
