  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the relationship between socioeconomic characteristics and the prevalence of periodontal disease, with a focus on employment status, in a representative sample of Korean adults aged 19-39 years. Methods: Data were obtained from 3,178 adults who completed the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, health-related questionnaires, and an oral examination. Socioeconomic, demographic, and oral health-related behavior data were adopted as independent variables. The chi-square test was used to assess differences in the distribution of socioeconomic status, oral health behavior, and nutrition factors according to employment status. Logistic regression analysis was performed to confirm the relationships between the prevalence of periodontitis and the related variables. Results: Significant differences in sex, educational level, income, marital status, smoking status, prevalence of periodontitis, number of dental check-ups in a year, and unmet dental care were confirmed according to employment status. The prevalence of periodontal disease was not significantly related to employment status. Conclusions: These results suggest a significant difference in periodontal disease according to socioeconomic factors in Korean adults. However, the prevalence of periodontal disease was not related to employment status. To prevent the progression of periodontal disease, attention should be paid to oral health, time available for dental treatment, smoking cessation, and use of floss.

  • The aim of this study was to confirm the association between obesity and periodontitis in adults and identify the convergence relationship between periodontal disease and health-related behavior at each stage of obesity among 10,058 adults aged 30-79 years from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey data. We performed chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses, adjusting for demographic characteristics and health status. We found that the higher the obesity stage, the higher the risk of periodontitis. Smoking, not using oral care products, and not attending dental check-ups were associated with periodontitis. In addition, we found a difference in influence factors according to the stage of obesity. Increase in obesity stage is a negative influence on the prevalence of periodontitis. Hence, an oral health program should be applied to the obesity management process.

  • This study aimed to identify the association between each stage of Community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) and oral health behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on the data obtained from 11,002 adults aged between 19 and 79 years, using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. When interdental care products such as floss or interdental brush were used, the risk of CPITN1 to CPITN3 and periodontitis was significantly reduced. Brushing more than 3 times a day significantly reduced the risk for CPITN1 and CPITN2, and dental check-ups reduced the risk for CPITN1, CPITN2, and periodontitis. There were differences in related factors depending on the stage of CPITN and periodontitis. Therefore, it is essential to include training on the use of interdental care products in oral health education. In addition, it will be helpful educate subjects on select oral health behaviors based on their periodontal status.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between socioeconomic characteristics and prevalence of periodontal disease in a representative sample of Korean adults older than age 20. Methods: Data of 3,837 adults were collected by the six Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted in 2015. Socioeconomic, demographic, and oral health-related behavior data were collected as independent variables. We determined frequencies, percentage, and determining statistical significance using multiple regression analysis. Results: Prevalence of periodontal diseases showed statistically significant difference in accordance with sex, age, socioeconomic and demographical characteristics and oral health-related behavior. It was confirmed that the prevalence of periodontal diseases was increased in the lower educational level and income (OR, 1.478 and 1.520) after adjusting for conditions such as age, sex, recent dental check-ups, visiting dental clinic, tooth brushing frequency, use of self-care devices. Conclusions: The prevalence of periodontal disease was related with socioeconomic factors in Korean adults. Therefore, differentiated oral health service policies and dental health education among adults with lower education and income is required in order to reduce the prevalence of periodontal disease.

  • Recently, the oriental medicine industry in Korea has faced much hardship, due to the decreasing number of patients. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the reasons why patients are avoiding oriental medicine, because the percentage of people consuming medical service is an important marker that assesses the value of medical service. The researcher(s), based on theories on factors that affect health, health behaviors, and diseases, sought to find reasons why oriental medicine clinics saw a decline in the number of patients. Also, by proposing the problems inside the oriental medicine, I came to the following conclusion. -Because Koreans have low expectations for oriental medicine, they do not consider it as full medical service. Also, when they get sick, they are reluctant to seek oriental medicine because of reasons such as the limits of oriental medicine and check-ups, expensive medical cost, negative perception of oriental medicine, not enough support from the media, the old image of the oriental medicine and the little power the industry has on the society. -Among the inner problems of the oriental medicine community was the limitations that the science face on incurable and chronic diseases in terms of treatment and management, little professionalism, lack of scientific evidence, the attitude of the oriental medicine society, lack of sophistication in research methodology, and limitations in responding to changes in public health and the surroundings. The purpose of medicine is to eliminate the possibility of shortened life and dangers by treatment of diseases and health maintenance. For this to happen, structural and developed medical theories and means of treatment are necessary. The researcher hypothesizes that the problems that the oriental medicine society is facing mainly come from the lack of efforts and ability to provide such necessities.

  • The concept of parish nursing began in the late 1960s in the United States when increasing numbers of churches employed registered nurses (RNs) to provide holistic, preventive health care to the members of their congregations. Parish nursing role was developed in 1983 by Lutheran chaplain Granger Westberg, and provides care to a variety of church congregation of various denominations. The parish nurse functions as health educator, counselor, group facilitator, client advocate, and liaison to community resources. Since these activities are complementary to the population-focused practice of community health' CNSs, parish nurses either have a strong public health background or work directly with both baccalaureate-prepared public health nurses and CNSs. In a Midwest community in U.S.A., the Healthy People 2000(1991) objectives are being addressed in health ministries through a coalition between public health nurses and parish nurses. Parish nursing is in the beginning state in Korea and up untill now, there has been no research was conducted on concrete role of korean parish nurses. The main purpose of this study was to identify, classify and analyze activities of parish nurses. The other important objective of this study was to establish an effective approach and direction for parish nursing and provide a database for korean parish nursing model through analysis and' classification of the content of the nursing record which included nursing activities. This study was a descriptive survey research. The parish nurses were working in churches where the demonstration project developed on parish nursing. The study was done on all nursing records which were working in churches where the demonstration project developed on parish nursing. The study was done on all nursing records which were documented by parish nurses in three churches from March, 1995 to February, 1996. Namsan, Taegu Jeei and Nedang presbyterian churches in Taegu and Keimyung nursing college incooperated together for the parish nursing demonstration project. The data analysis procedure was as follows: First, a record analysis tool was developed and second, the data was collected, coded and analyzed, the classification for nursing activities was developed through a literature review, from which the basic analysis tool was produced and cotent validity review was also done. The classification of the activities of parish nurses showed 7 activitity categories. 7 activity categories consisted of visitation nursing, health check-ups, health education, referring, attending staff meetings, attending inservices and seminar, volunteers coordinating. The percentage of activities were as follows: Visitation nursing(A: 51.6%, B: 55%, C: 42.6%) Health check-ups(A: 13.5%, B: 12.1%, C: 22.3%) Health education(A: 13.5%, B: 13.2%, C: 18.2%) Referring(A: 1.4%, B: 4.2%, C: 2.4%) Attending staff meeting(A: 18.8%, B: 13.0%, C: 12.2%) Attending inservices and seminar(A: 1.5%, B: 2.2%, C: 2.1%) Volunteers coordinating(A: 0.3%, B: 0.4%, C: 0.0%) To establish and develope parish nursing delivery network in Korea, parish nurses role, activities and boundaries of practice should be continuously monitored and refined every 2 years. Also, It is needed to develope effective nursing recording system based on the need assessment research data of various congregation members. role, activities and boundaries of practice and arrangement of the working structure, continuing education, cooperation with community resources and structuring and organizing parish nursing delivery network. Also, It is needed to develope effective nursing recording system based on the need assessment research data of various congregation members.

  • PURPOSE: This research was designed to study the correlations between physical activities such as foot sensory impairment, balance and ambulatory abilities, as well as fall risk factors and mental activities such as cognitive performance and depression in order to provide fundamental data for the prevention of falling in the elderly. METHODS: A total of 36 elderly people over the age of 65 years who voluntarily joined the research were selected as subjects. Sensory perception in both feet was measured by using a monofilament in 10 parts with each part given one point. The points for each foot were integrated to analyze the correlations between physical and mental activities indices, and the results were analyzed by using Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The results of this research show that the extent to which senses in feet were impaired was correlated to TUG, a functional activity index involved in tranfers, gait, and turning movements, which was correlated to BBS (balance index) as well as MMSE-K and K-GDS (mental activities index). BBS was interrelated to FES-K (physical activities index) and MMSE-K. The muscular strength of the right ankle dorsiflexor had mutual relations with FES-K. CONCLUSION: The results of this research indicate that TUG is widely correlated to foot sensory impairment as well as general physical and mental activities in elderly people. BBS was also shown to be correlated with TUG, FES-K, and MMSE-K. Thus, it might be necessary that TUG and BBS be included as two items in physical and mental check-ups for the elderly, and further studies on correlations using evaluation items for physical and mental activities should lead to the simplification of the evaluation criteria.
