  • In this experiment, three kinds of autoclaved poultry by-product meals, P1 (head+feet+viscera), P2(P1+blood), and P3(P2+feathers), mixed as to the yielding ratios, and three kinds of autoclaved hatchery by-products meals, H1 (male d-old chicks of egg strain), H2(dead embryos & infertile eggs), and H3(H1+H2, 2:1) were formulated into the layer diets each at 5% level, respectively, and compared with the control diets(C) containing fishmeal on laying performances and egg qualifies. The egg production, average egg weight, feed intake and feed conversion were not significantly affected by the poultry or hatchery by-product meals. The egg shell qualities, such as the egg specific gravity, egg breaking strength and shell thickness, were not different among treatments. The egg yolk colour was improved by the feeding of hatchery by-products meals (P<0.05). In conclusion, pultry and hatchery by-product meals could be used in layer diets without any adverse effects on laying performances to substitute for fishmeal at about 5% level.

  • Objective: The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of dietary hatchery by-products (HBPs) as a replacement of fish meal (FM) on growth performance, relative organ weight, plasma measurements, immune organ index, meat quality, and tibia characteristics of broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 720 broiler chickens (3 d of age) were randomly allotted to 1 of 9 treatments with 8 replicates. Each replicate consisted of 5 male and 5 female birds. The basal diet was formulated to contain 5.0% commercial FM, whereas eight treatment diets were prepared by replacing 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of FM in the basal diet with infertile eggs (IFE) or a mixture of various HBPs (MIX); therefore, the inclusion levels of IFE or MIX in the experimental diets were 1.25%, 2.50%, 3.75%, or 5.00%. The diets and water were provided on an ad libitum basis for 32 d. Results: Increasing inclusion levels of IFE as a replacement of FM in diets had no effects on growth performance, plasma measurements, immune organ index, and tibia characteristics of broiler chickens. Increasing inclusion levels of IFE in diets increased (linear, p<0.05) meat lightness (L*) but decreased (linear, p<0.05) meat redness (a*). The breast meat pH at 1-h postmortem was increased (linear, p<0.05) by increasing inclusion levels of IFE in diets. Likewise, increasing inclusion levels of MIX in diets had no effects on growth performance, relative organ weight, plasma measurements, immune organ index, and tibia characteristics. However, increasing inclusion levels of MIX in diets increased (linear, p<0.05) 1-h postmortem pH but decreased (linear, p<0.05) 24-h postmortem pH of breast meat. Increasing inclusion levels of MIX in diets decreased (linear, p<0.05) thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values of breast meat. Conclusion: Both IFE and MIX are suitable alternatives to FM as protein ingredients in broiler diets.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic information for hatchery by-products as feed resources. Four kinds of by-products from a commercial hatchery, i. e., autoclaved day-old broiler or egg type chicks, dead embryos & infertile eggs of both chicks were used for chemical composition and bioavailability test. Chemical compositions were obtained by AOAC (1990) method, and amino acid and energy bioavailabilities were determined by the method of Sibbald (1976). The crude protein contents of day-old chicks (60.27∼62.59) were higher than those of dead embryos & infertile eggs (39.24∼40.09) , whereas the crude fat contents of all by-products were not different. The crude ash contents were higher in dead embryos & infertile eggs (29.18∼34.49%) than in day-old chicks (6.50∼6.71%). The Ca contents of dead embryos & infertile eggs (8.79∼10.82%) were higher than those of day-old chicks (1.29∼l.30%). The total amino acid contents, overall amino acid availabilities and ME contents were higher in day-old chicks than in dead embryos & infertile eggs. It seems that the day-old chicks of egg strain can be used as a high protein - high energy feed resources and the dead embryos & infertile eggs of broiler or egg type as a high protein-high calcium feed ingredients.

  • The objective of the current study was to determine calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) utilization in 4 different hatchery by-products (HBPs) for broiler chickens. The four different HBPs included infertile eggs (IFE), unhatched eggs (UHE), low grade and dead chicks (LDC), and a mixture (MIX) of 55% IFE, 10% UHE, and 10% LDC with 25% hatched eggshells. A total of sixty four 50-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 8 replicates per treatment. Two birds were placed together in one metabolic cage. Additional 16 birds were used to measure the endogenous losses of Ca and P. A forcefeeding procedure (i.e., crop intubation) was used to measure the apparent and true total tract retention (ATTR and TTTR, respectively) of Ca and P in the 4 HBPs. The results showed that the TTTR of Ca in the UHE was less (p < 0.05) than that in the IFE, LDC, and MIX. The amounts of available Ca in the MIX were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the IFE and UHE, which were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the LDC. The TTTR of P was not different among the 4 HBPs. However, the amounts of available P in the LDC were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the IFE and UHE, which were greater (p < 0.05) than those in the MIX. In conclusion, HBPs contain high amounts of available Ca and P because of high concentrations of total Ca and P with a high utilization rate. Therefore, the use of HBPs in broiler diets can reduce costs on Ca and P supplements.

  • The basic problem of the broiler industry is that of fluctuating prices, mainly thanks to unstable supply of and inelastic demand for products as usually indicated as a peculiarity of agricultural commodities. This particularly brings the producer to a great economic risk, because he has to sell products under the condition of pure competition, whereas others from whom he has to buy deal under the condition of oligopoly or even monopoly. Therefore, producers economic position is generally placed in the worst comparing others dealing with, which results in unbalanced economic status of elements involved in broiler operation and further obstruction of industry development as a whole. A certain type of business coordination to overcome such a problem should be measured in order to improve the efficiency of entire operation and thus assure the balanced industry development. The concept of the economic integration developed in modern business system had been adapted to U.S. poultry industry which became common later around the world as a means of stabilizing producers price and whole industry as well. There are two main typos of integration; horizontal and vertical The former refers to the general grouping of similar business units, eg. a hatchery tying with other hatchery, while the latter refers to the knitting together of two or more stages of economic activities, eg. tying together among units of hatching, fled milling, production, processing and marketing. By having the industry integrated, risk and uncertainty involved in various stages of operation could be diversified. The typo of integrating contract between producers and integrators include the share of profits, flat fee payment, feed conversion payment and salary basis. In the U.S., extensive changes in production, processing, and marketing during the last few decades have changed the thicken broiler industry from one of small, widely scattered farms to one that is largo, concentrated and efficient. More than 99 percent of all broilers produced are grown under contract and by integrated firms which vary in size of operation and complexity. About 84 percent of all production is concentrated in 10 States. Some of the other factors ;hat contributed to these choses arc costs, energy use, prices, processing, marketing and demand. No integrated broiler production system has yet been applied in Korea's poultry industry, thus all stages all broiler operation run independently seeking for its own profit. Consequently, producers price fluctuate very widely around the year even more than 50 percent in a few months. This also leads to disadvantages of material supplies, processors and distributors and enforce the industry unstable. The current economic environment in Korea seems that the time for broiler integration comes and as an ideal integrator, feed millers, food processors and producers group may be considered.

  • Endogeneous activities of ${\beta}-galactosidase$-like enzyme in various tissues from several finfishes and shellfishes were examined by histochemical analysis based on X-gal staining and by fluorimetric measurement using 4-methylumbelliferyl-${\beta}$-D-galactoside (4-MUG). Species used in this study were 3 freshwater fishes, mud loach (Misgurnus mizolepis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) ; 3 marine fishes, olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), stone flounder (Kareius bicoloratus) and marbled sole (Limanda yokohamae) ; and 4 shellfishes, abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), Pacific oyster (Crassoskra gigas), pearl oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii) and ark shell (Anadara broughtonii). The activities of ${\beta}-galactosidase$-like enzyme in all finfishes examined were significantly different among species, with the wide variations between tissues in a species. In general, the tissues such as kidney, intestine and liver were ones which showed the significantly higher values in 4-MUG fluorimetry and deeper staining patterns in X-gal analysis compared to other tissues. On the other hand, serum and muscle revealed the significantly lower activities than others did, regardless of species. Shellfishes were also found to have endogenous activities of ${\beta}-galactosidase$-like enzyme which were significantly varied depending on both species and organs in a species. Hepatopancreas from all shellfishes examined showed the deepest pattern in X-gal staining and also the highest value in 4-MUG analysis, while activities of ${\beta}-galactosidase$-like enzyme in adductor muscles and mantle muscles from all shellfish species in this study except Pacific oyster were negligible : Pacific oyster had the significant activity of this enzyme in muscle tissues. Putative endogenous lacZ fragment was amplified from both finfishes and shellfishes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The molecular size of PCR products was about 510 bp, and there was no difference in size among species examined.

  • Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNY) is an economically important fish pathogen since it causes the high-mortality disease in early stage of hatchery-reared fishes. In order to develop a rapid, sensitive and highly specific detection method for IPNV, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was carried out using the oligonucleotide primers selected from the sequence of VP2, a major capsid polypertide of IPNV. As little as 40ng of purified IPNV dsRNA was detected by RT-PCR amplification, but no amplification products were obtained when nucleic acid genomes from other fish pathogens such as IHNV were used as RT-PCR templates. in situ RT-PCR methods are useful for the rapid and sensitive identification of IPNV.

  • Survival and growth rates of flounder larvae fed rotifers and Artemia nauplii enriched by various bio-enrichment techniques were investigated. Enriched materials used in the study were $12\omega-yeast$, 2 commercial emulsified oil and microparticulated products. $\omega-yeast$ were added with one kinds of oils (cuttlefish liver oil, sardine oil, Alaska pollock liver oil, linseed oil) at the level of $5\%,\;15\%\;and\;25\%$. The results are as follows: 1. The growth rate of rotifers cultured with $\omega-yeast$ added $15\%$ cuttlefish liver oil was the best among 12 kinds of $\omega-yeast$ and this performance was almost the same with that of rotifers fed on Chlorella. 2. Survival and growth rates of flounder larvae fed on rotifers and Artemia nauplii enriched with $\omega-yeast$ and the other commercial products were higher than that those of larvae cultured with only Chlorella and non-enriched Artemia. The optimum contents of the cuttlefish liver oil in $\omega-yeast$ for rotifers and Artemia enrichment were $15\%\;and\;25\%$, respectively. 3. Optimum enrichment time and supply amount of $\omega-yeast$ for Artemia nauplii were 6 hr., 1.5 g/g cyst, respectively.

  • To evaluate the physiological status of laying flocks, the blood chemistry values were measured and analyzed in various ages under different feeding conditions. Total 671 birds from 48 Hyline brown hens flocks from 13 different poultry farms were bled at the ages of day(s) 1, 11, 21, 50, 80, 120, 180, 240, 300, 400, and 500. The 17 blood chemistries including glucose, lipids, proteins, enzymes, electrolytes and metabolic by-products were measured with an autoanalyzer. Blood glucose showed the highest at the hatching day not relate with the dietary carbohydrates and energy, but tended to decrease during the rest of growth stage in hens. Total blood protein, albumin and globulin increased depending on the ages even though dietary protein was decreased. Blood lipid was greatly changed at different growth stages. Cholesterol was the highest at hatching period and maintained consistently until the 120 days of age. It was increased in birds after 180 days of age. HDL was also highest in hatchery, but decreased greatly after 180 days of age. However, TG was the lowest at one day old, but was increased up to 10 times after 180 days of age compared to that of one day old. The enzyme activities were different. AST, ALT, and GGT showed comparatively contained consistently, whereas amylase was slowly decreased. Blood P, Na, K and Cl showed consistency, but Ca content was increased upto two times of the one day of age. The results from this study showed that the blood chemistry values were affected by the general metabolic status of the host with ages not by feeding conditions. Further, the standard data of age-dependent blood chemistry values in the laying flocks were obtained, which can be utilized for early detection of the changes in the physiological status occurred by the infectious or metabolic diseases. The results of these analyses seemed to be useful to increase the productivity of laying flocks through rapid and proper veterinary medical treatments.
