This article investigates the energy harvesting characteristics of a magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) cantilever beam reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT) under transverse vibration. To this end, the well-known lumped parameter model is used to represent the coupled multiphysics problem mathematically. The proposed system consists of the MEE-CNT layer on top and an inactive substrate layer at the bottom. The substrate is considered to be made of either an isotropic or composite material. Basic laws such as Gauss's Law, Newton's Law and Faraday's Law are used to arrive at the governing equations. Surface electrodes across the beam are used to harvest the electric potential produced, together with a wound coil, for the generated magnetic potential. The influence of various distributions of the CNT and its volume fraction, substrate material, length-to-thickness ratio, and thickness ratio of substrate to MEE layer on the energy harvesting behaviour is thoroughly discussed. Further, the effect of external resistances and changes in substrate material on the response is analysed and reported. The article aims to explore smart material-based energy harvesting systems, focusing on their behaviour when reinforced with carbon nanotubes. The results of this study may lead to an improved understanding of the design and analysis of CNT-based smart structures.

Recently, RF energy harvesting technology is a promising technology for small-size IoT(Internet of Things) devices such as sensor to resolve battery scarcity problem. When applied to existing cognitive radio networks, this technology can be expected to increase network throughput through the increase of cognitive user's operating time. This paper proposes a optimal channel-selection policy for RF energy harvesting CR networks model where cognitive users in harvesting zone harvest ambient RF energy from transmission by nearby active primary users and the others in non-harvesting zone choose the channel and communicate with their receiver. We consider that primary users and secondary users are distributed as Poisson point processes and contact with their intended receivers at fixed distances. Finally we can derive the optimal frame duration, transmission power and density of secondary user from the proposed model that can maximize the secondary users's throughput under the given several conditions and suggest future directions of research.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to optimize energy efficiency in a multi-user decoupled RF energy harvesting network and experiment on the trend of energy efficiency change assuming users' various geographical distribution scenarios. In the RF energy harvesting network where both wireless data transmission and RF energy harvesting are simultaneously performed, the energy efficiency is a key indicator of network performance, and it is necessary to investigate how various factors can affect the energy efficiency. In order to increase energy efficiency effectively, we can confirm that users' distributions are important factors in the RF energy harvesting network from the simulation results.

In the fruit harvesting field, interest in automatic robot harvesting is increasing due to various seasonality and rising harvesting costs. Accurate apple detection is a difficult problem in complex orchard environments with changes in light, vibrations caused by wind, and occlusion of leaves and branches. In this paper, we introduce a dataset and an adaptive heatmap regression model that are advantageous for robot automatic apple harvesting. The apple dataset was labeled with not only the apple location but also the visibility. We propose a method to detect the center point of an apple using an adaptive heatmap regression model that adjusts the Gaussian shape according to visibility. The experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed method was applicable to apple harvesting robots, with MAP@K of 0.9809 and 0.9801 when K=5 and K=10, respectively.

Recently, energy harvesting technology is considered as a tool to improve the lifetime of sensor networks by mitigating the battery capacity limitation problem. However, the previous work on energy harvesting has failed to provide practical information since it has assumed an ideal channel knowledge model with perfect channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). This paper proposes an energy efficient resource allocation scheme that takes account of the channel estimation process and the corresponding estimation error. Based on the optimization tools, we provide information on efficient scheduling and power allocation as the functions of channel estimation accuracy, harvested energy, and data rate. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional energy harvesting networks without considering channel estimation error in terms of energy efficiency. Furthermore, with taking account of channel estimation error, the results provides a new way for allocating resources and scheduling devices.

Battery has major drawbacks including its size and life expectancy, and environmental problem. As an alternative, energy harvesting is emerging as a potential solution to replace battery along with more energy-efficient IT devices. The idea of harnessing energy from our living environment is sustainable, semi-permanent, and eco-friendly. Also, unlike battery, energy harvester does not require much space to store energy. Therefore, energy harvesting can provide a better source of power for small, portable, and wireless devices. Among various ways of harvesting energy from our surroundings, triboelectricity is chosen due to its potential to be miniaturized, and efficient. Triboelectric effect occurs as two different materials with different polarity of charge separation come into contact through friction, and then become separated so that electric potential difference is achieved. In this research, such characteristic of triboelectricity is used as a way to convert ambient mechanical energy into electric energy.Series of recent researches have shown promising results that the triboelectric energy harvester can be simple and cost effective. However, sufficient electricity level required to operate mobile devices has not yet been achieved. In this research, our group focuses on the design and optimization of triboelectric energy harvesting device to enhance its output. By using maskless lithography to pattern Kapton film and silicon substrate, which is used as a mold for PDMS thin layer, and sputtering metal electrodes on each side, we fabricate and demonstrate different designs of triboelectric energy harvester that utilizes the contact electrification between a polymer thin film and a metal thin foil. In order to achieve optimized result, the output voltage and current are measured under diverse conditions, which include different surface structure and pattern, material, and the gap between layers.
The role of drones has been expanded to various fields such as agriculture, construction, and logistics. In particular, agriculture drones are emerging as an effective alternative to solve the problem of labor shortage and reduce the input cost. In this study therefore, we proposed the fruit recognition algorithm and harvesting mechanism for fruit harvesting drone system that can safely harvest fruits at high positions. In the fruit recognition algorithm, we employ "You-Only-Look-Once" which is a deep learning-based object detection algorithm and verify its feasibility by establishing a virtual simulation environment. In addition, we propose the fruit harvesting mechanism which can be operated by a single driving motor. The rotational motion of the motor is converted into a linear motion by the scotch yoke, and the opened gripper moves forward, grips a fruit and rotates it for harvesting. The feasibility of the proposed mechanism is verified by performing Multi-body dynamics analysis.

Recently, the energy harvesting technology in which energy is collected from the wireless signal which is transmitted by mobile communication devices, has been considered as a novel way to improve the life time of wireless sensors by mitigating the lack of power supply problem. In this paper, we consider the optimal sensing time and power allocation problem for cognitive radio systems, where the energy efficiency of secondary user is maximized while the constraint are satisfied, using the optimization technique. Based on the derived optimal solutions, we also have proposed an iterative resource allocation algorithm in which the optimal power and sensing time allocation can be found without excessive computations. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme achieves the optimal performance and it outperforms the conventional resource allocation schemes in terms of energy efficiency while the constraints are guaranteed to be satisfied.

Energy harvesting (EH) and network coding (NC) have emerged as two promising technologies for future wireless networks. In this paper, we combine them together in a single system and then present a time switching-based network coding relaying (TSNCR) protocol for the two-way relay system, where an energy constrained relay harvests energy from the transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals from two sources, and then helps the two-way relay information exchange between the two sources with the consumption of the harvested energy. To evaluate the system performance, we derive an explicit expression of the outage probability for the proposed TSNCR protocol. In order to explore the system performance limit, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability. Since the problem is non-convex and cannot be directly solved, we design a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization algorithm for it. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show that in such an EH two-way relay system, if NC is applied, the system outage probability can be greatly decreased. Moreover, it is shown that the relay position greatly affects the system performance of TSNCR, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the relay is placed in the middle of the two sources. This is the first time to observe such a phenomena in EH two-way relay systems.

Energy harvesting techniques, particularly radio frequency energy harvesting (RF-EH) techniques, which are known to provide feasible solutions to enhance the performance of energy constrained wireless communication systems, have gained increasing attention. In this paper, we consider a wireless-powered cooperative communication network (WPCCN) for transferring energy in the downlink and forwarding signals in the uplink. The objective is to maximize the average transmission rate of the system, subject to the total network power constraint. We formulate such a problem as a form of wireless energy transmission based on resource allocation that searches for the joint subcarrier pairing and the time and power allocation, and this can be solved by using a dual approach. Simulation results show that the proposed joint optimal scheme can efficiently improve system performance with an increase in the number of subcarriers and relays.
