Xylia xylocarpa is fast-growing trees that are currently planted on trial basis in Sabah, Malaysia. The wood quality of trees grown in Sabah may differ from those grown in other places due to the environmental factors. Five 9-year-old trees of each species were extracted from their respective plots at Luasong, Tawau. Wood specimens were prepared from three height levels; bottom, middle and top, at the inner and outer radial positions. The within-tree and between-tree variations of physical properties of these species were analyzed. The basic density, oven-dry density and green moisture content(MC) are 0.72g/$cm^3$, 0.78g/$cm^3$ and 49.8% respectively. The shrinkage from green to oven-dry conditions for the radial and tangential directions were 3.35% and 5.76%, respectively. The trends of within-tree variations for most properties were more consistent in radial rather than vertical direction. This suggests diameter growth to be a more important factor contributing to the variations compared to height. Samples from the outer part of the stem were found to have higher density, shrinkage and mechanical strengths. The between-trees variations of some wood properties were found to be significantly different, probably due to genetic and micro-environmental factors. Significant correlation was recorded among the physical properties of the species. The true potential of X. xylocarpa for end-uses would be enhanced by further research such as the study on properties of wood from different sites and other properties like durability, seasoning, processing and machining characteristics. The characteristics of X. xylocarpa are comparable to a number of local popular hardwood species, indicating its suitability for heavy construction uses.
Zelkova serrata is an important hardwood species for the timber industry in Japan. Tree breeding programs for this species have mainly focused on growth characteristics such as stem diameter (D), tree height (TH), stem form, and branching. In order to fulfill timber industry needs, wood quality improvement should be included in the tree breeding program of this species. In the present study, growth characteristics, such as D and TH, and the stress-wave velocity (SWV), which is highly correlated with Young's modulus of wood, were measured for 20-year-old Z. serrata from eight half-sib families planted in a progeny test site with three different initial spacings. Significant differences in all the measured characteristics were found among the eight half-sib families. The variance components of the half-sib families for D, TH, and SWV were 27.2%, 47.3%, and 33.5%, respectively. These results indicate that all the measured characteristics of this species could be improved by tree breeding programs. In addition, only low correlation coefficients were obtained between the growth characteristics and SWV, indicating that extensive selection on SWV in tree breeding programs may not always lead to a reduction in yield volume.
Stress wave velocity, wave impedance, and stress wave elasticity of small, clear bending specimens of five domestic softwoods (Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Cryptomeria japonica, and Larix leptolepis) and four tropical hardwoods(Kempas, Malas, Taun, and Terminalia) were correlated with static bending modulus of elasticity(MOE) and modulus of rupture(MOR). The degree of correlation between stress wave parameters and static bending properties was dependent on wood species tested. Stress wave elasticity and wave impedance were better predictors for static bending properties than stress wave velocity for each species individually and for softwood or hardwood species taken as a group, even though elasticity and impedance were nearly equally correlated with static bending properties apparently. Based upon the correlation coefficient between stress wave parameters and static properties, stress wave elasticity and wave impedance were found as stress wave parameters which can be used for the purpose of the reliable and successful prediction of bending properties. The degree of correlation between static MOE and MOR was also different according to wood species tested. Static MOE was nearly as well correlated with MOR as was stress wave elasticity. The results of this research are encouraging and can be considered as a basis for further work using full-size lumber. From the results of this study, it was concluded that stress wave measurements could provide useful predictions of static bending properties and was a feasible method for machine stress grading of domestic softwoods and tropical hardwoods tested in this study.
Huber value and leaf specific conductivity were investigated for determining the hydraulic conductance of six deciduous hardwood species subjected to five levels of artificial shade treatments. Huber values measured in full sun were in the ranges of $1.5{\sim}9.1mm^2/dm^2$, $1.3{\sim}2.6mm^2/dm^2$, $1.5{\sim}5.3mm^2/dm^2$ in June, July, and September, respectively in the first year. The values generally decreased with increasing the shading in most of the species studied. Because of early defoliation in September, most of the values measured were also higher in September than in July. Huber values were quite different between those of the first year and those of the second year in most of the species studied, but the seasonal variation of Huber values and shading effects to the values seemed to be similar between the first and the second years. The values of leaf specific conductivity(LSC) measured in Betula platyphylla var. japonica. B. schmidtii, Zelkova serrata, Acer mono for 2 years were in the range of $4.0{\sim}80.0{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$ by season and by shading treatment. But in Ligustrum obtusifolium and Prunus sargentii, the values were in the ranges of $4.0{\sim}280.0{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$ and $8.0{\sim}120{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$, respectively with having quite different values compared with those of the above species. Seasonal variation of LSC values was more or less irregular by species and by treatment year, but the LSC values of B. platyphylla vac. japonica, B. schmidtii, and P. sargentii in the first year and also those of Z. serrata and P. sargentii in the second year were mostly higher in September than in July. The LSC values seemed to be generally decreased with increasing the artificial shading in all of the species studied.
This study was carried out to improve the forest management method considering the use of high value added timber in the natural broadleaf forests. For this purpose, the criteria for evaluating the quality grade of standing trees were established and applied to the oak stand in the central region of Korea. The evaluation factors of the grade were bending of stem, branch, stem damage, and other defects. If the logs are divided into 2.1 m units and three logs up to 6.3 m are available, they are classified as Grade I (G-I). If two logs are available, they are classified as Grade II (G-II), If only one log is available, it is classified as Grade III (G-III). When any log is not available as timber, it is classified as Grade IV (G-IV). As a result of applying the grade to the oak stand, G-I was 6.7 %, G-II was 28.0 %, G-III was 38.3 %, and G-IV was 27.0 %. The ratio of standing trees by oak species of higher than G-III was 88.2 % for Quercus acutissima, 88.1 % for Q. variabilis, 83.5 % for Q. serrata, 56.3 % for Q. aliena, and 50.3 % for Q. mongolica, respectively. The G-IV ratio for Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica tended to decrease with increasing diameter at breast height. The order of major defect affecting the grading level was bending of stem > branch > stem damage > other defects. Considering the grade level and oak species distribution, it was concluded possible to produce high quality hardwood timber when we concentrate forest tending techniques on Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis stand. In order to improve the accuracy of grading, it is necessary to continuous complement through the monitoring research for evaluation factors.
Recognizing the necessity of the development of ecologically sound silvicultural system for the mature Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), this study was carried out to examine the invasion and growth of understory vegetation after partial cutting. In 1997, the age class VII Korean pine forest in the Experimental Forest of Kangwon National University was opened up about 50% by modified shelterwood cutting with site preparation to induce succeeding regenerations. After 10 years, plenty of hardwood have come to the stand, forming understory vegetation. The abundance and composition of understory vegetation was periodically investigated in the ten $10m{\times}10m$ permanent sample plots, estimating importance values, species diversity index and the distribution of diameter and height of the understory vegetation. Encouraged by canopy opening, the coverage of understory reached perfect closure, composed of 22 tree species and 20 shrub species in 2007. Morus bombycis occupied 29.6% of the total importance value and Cornus controversa was 17.0%, followed by Styrax obassia, Quercus aliena, Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, and Pinus koraiensis. In the year of 2000 the species diversity was highest as 2.547 with 26 tree species and deceasing thereafter, showing 2.220 with 22 tree species in 2007. As understory layer was thickly covered and got grow bigger, some shade intolerant species were disappeared, lowering species diversity. In 2007 the biggest tree was a Quercus aliena with 11.3 cm of DBH and the tallest tree was a Cornus controversa with 9.8m of height. The frequency distribution of number of trees by diameter and height classes formed the inverted-J-shaped curve, supposed to be typical uneven-aged stand.
Changes in breeding bird community and forest structure by thinning were investigated from April 1997 to August 1998 in 10ha ($400{\times}250m$) of temperate mixed hardwood forest in Mt. Gariwang which is located in National Forest, Pyoungchang, Kangwon Province, Korea. Bird community was surveyed by the territory mapping method and forest structure was done by analyzing the vertical structure of foliage, distribution of diameter at breast height (DBH) of trees and tree species composition. After the thinning, tree density, number of tree species and basal area were decreased from 195ea/ha, 18 species and 6.69 $m^2/ha$ into 100ea/ha, 13 species and 3.04 $m^2/ha$, respectively. Foliage coverages in upper and mid layer were decreased, but coverage in low layer was increased. Large trees (Over 40cm of DBH) were decreased. Number of breeding bird species and pairs were decreased from 14 species and 23 pairs into 8 species and 12 pairs after the thinning. Number of breeding pairs of Yellow-breasted bunting Emberiza elegans incresed. There were decrease in number of species in hole & bush-nesting and canopy & bush-foraging guild. The results suggested that the thinning affect the species composition of breeding bird community and the forest structure. Changes of habitat structure might influence in breeding bird's density, species diversity and habitat using pattern of breeding bird community.
This study was carried out to investigate on the catalytic pyrolysis products of hardwood (Alnus hirsuta (Spach) Rupr. Quercus acutissima Carruters, Robinia pseudoacacia L., and Populus tomentaglandulosa T. Lee) and comparing the rate of catalytic pyrolysis from untreated wood (ordinary wood) with that of treated wood with catalizer (Ammonium phosphate, Ammonium sulfate, Ammonium chloride and Urea). The results were summerized as follows; 1) It is the Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee that the species has the most content of holocellulose and pentosan. And Populus tomentiglandulosa exhibited high yield of the distillate in pyrolysis products by Ammonium phosphate with catalizer. 2) The distillate of pyrolysis products is decreased in accordance with increasing catalytic concentration. And untreated wood (ordinary wood) with catalizer has the most distillate of pyrolysis products. 3) The yield of charcoal in pyrolysis products is increased in accordance with increasing catalytic concentration and lignin content of species. 4) The caloric values of charcoal in pyrolysis products is decreased with increasing catalytic concentration. And untreated wood (ordinary wood) with catalizer had the most caloric values, but the caloric values of charcoal did not show statistically significent difference at 5% levels in catalizer.
This study was carried out to research structure of forest vegetation and site condition, and supply basic data for conservation of pine forest and ecologically sustainable forest management and control in Anmyondo area. The forest of Anmyondo were largely classified as four forest community : Pinus densiflora community, Pinus thunbergii community, Pinus rigida community, and Quercus variabilis community. Organic matter, total nitrogen, and other nutrients in soil of the study area were relatively low, and average soil pH was 4.9. Soil texture was sandy clay or heavy clay and so the aeration and permeability could be poor. In this study site, the methods such as the promotion of germination of pine seeds through removal of forest floor and inducement of natural regeneration through such method as regeneration under shelter wood would be better than the method such as afforestation after clear-cutting for conservation the pine forests. Also, it will be a good method to practice tending for hardwood species in the dominant areas by hardwood species.
Noticing the intrinsic growing habit variations of hardwood species which is indigenous to the natural deciduous forest, eighteen tree species in overstory were selected for comparative evaluating tree form so as to develop the tree form index (TFI). Selected six tree form attributes were arbitrarily divided four assessment criteria and given appropriate scores. Eighteen tree species were undergone corresponding scores, converted to percentage base, and estimated TFI by the summation of the six scoring values. Cluster analysis was carried out to review which attribute would have been shared among species based on dissimilarity of scores for each pair of species in $18{\times}6$ data matrix. The result showed that Populus davidiana had the highest TFI value of 80.8 and Carpinus cordata had the lowest TFI va1ue of 46.3. The species which received more than 70 of TFI are Populus davidiana, Betula costata, Fraxinus mandshurica, and Ulmus davidiana var. japonica, characterized by the advantage of straight and longer bole, the narrower crown, and the thinner branch. On the contrary, such species as Sorbus alnifolia. Prunus sargentii, Acer mandshuricum, Juglans mandshurica, and Carpinus cordata received less than 60 of TFI, characterized by the disadvantage of the crooked or forked stem. the wider or deeper crown. and the thicker branch. In the dendrogram produced by cluster analysis, arbitrary value of Euclidean distance 10 divided eighteen species into four distinctive groups. and the typical characteristics of each group were discussed.
