To establish the mass propagation methods of Weigela subsessilis,, a promising native plant species for horticultural use, several factors influencing rooting from stem cuttings were evaluated. Softwood cuttings showed best rooting rate, 70~77%, in all the cutting media tested, 2.8 times more than hardwood cuttings in which perlite was best medium. The rooting from hardwood cuttings was promoted by higher concentration of all growth regulators used,500 mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA being the best with 80%. More than 80% of softwood cuttings treated by growth regulators produced roots, especially 100, 500, and 1000mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA producing 97%. Roofings from semi-wood cuttings was enhanced by all the growth regulators, except 1000 mg.L$^{-1}$ concentration in which rooting was reduce. Higher rooting rate was obtained by higher concentration and longer soaking duration of NAA in case of hardwood cutting. Softwood cutting showed 100 % rooting by soaking treatment with 500 mg.L$^{-1}$ NAA for 3 min. Rooting rate of semi-hardwood cuttings was promoted by higher concentration and longer soaking with growth regulators, However, the degree of improvement was lower than soft and hardwood cutting.
Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.
We have relatively heavy stocks of hardwood which consist of inferior and nonproductive natural hardwood species in Korea. As conception above to develope these forest resources, the study was carried out to obtain the basical data for the reasonable and efficient utilization of hardwoods. The sample trees were selected 11 natural hardwood species grown in Kangwon-do region and Kwangnoong Experimental Forest. We have investigated anatomical, physical and mechanical properties of them. Especially, Quercus species which is a major species in the forests was investigated on qualities of trees, logs and lumbers, recevery of bucking and lumber yield, etc.
The objective of this study was to find optimal amount of fertilization of container seedling production for Zelkova serrata, Ulmus parvifolia, Betula costata and Tilia amurensis. To reach our goal, we measured root collar diameter (RCD), height, biomass and seedling quality index (SQI) of container seedlings of four deciduous hardwood species grown at three different fertilization treatments ($0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $1.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Z. serrata seedlings grown at $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization and B. costata seedlings grown at $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization showed the highest RCD, height, biomass and SQI. The RCD and height of U. parvifolia and T. amurensis seedlings showed no significant differences by fertilization treatments. Seedlings of two species at $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization showed the lowest SQI, however, SQI at 1.0 and $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization treatments were not significantly different. Based on these results, it is appeared that container seedlings of Z. serrata at minimum $2.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization, U. parvifolia and T. amurensis at $1.0g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization and B. costata at maximum $0.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ fertilization were optimal nutrient conditions. Practice of optimal fertilization rate will make us get better quality seedlings and reduction of production costs in the container nursery system as well as good field performances with higher survival rate after planting.
To find out the wood species used in national wood structures in the late Joseon Dynasty, 11 volumes of Yeonggeon-Uigwes were reviewed. It was confirmed that the wood was mainly used for the repair and restoration of palaces, shrines, and fortresses. In the 17th to 20th centuries, the wood species specified in Yeonggeon-Uigwes have revealed either hardwood or softwood. As hardwood species, Juglans mandshurica, Zelkova serrata, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Betula schmidtii, Paulownia coreana, or Quercus spp. (Quercus aliena; Q, variabilis; Q, dentata; Q, acutissima; Q, mongolica; Q, serrata) were used. As softwood species, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were used. Investigation of the wood species is important part because the same species is required as a principle when reparing cultural heritage. In this study, the anatomical images of the wood species were investigated for some samples which were taken from the same species that has been stored in the wood specimen room of the National Institute of Forest Science, instead of the actual wood material used. It was possible to find out the wood species of each member in the wooden cultural heritage buildings by reviewing the Yeonggeon-Uigwes in the late Joseon Dynasty, and the anatomical images of the wood species required for determining the wood species in the repair or restoration of the buildings.

The eco-friendly preservatives such as ACQ or CUAZ have been used in landscape architectural facilities these days. In this study, the decay efficacies of ACQ treatments were evaluated according to domestic veneer species, concentration of ACQ, weathering test, adhesive type, and fungus type. In case of veneer species, hinoki cypress and yellow poplar showed the highest and lowest decay resistance, respectively. And the decay resistance appeared to be greater in plywoods bonded by resorcinol resin-bonded plywood and non-weathering treated plywood than polyurethane resin-bonded plywood and weathering treated plywood.

The conventional pulping processes in Iran were reviewed in this paper. On account of forest resources restriction, a considerable extent of non-harvestable hardwood forests, the possibility of accessable non-wood resources and Poplar fast-growing species for using in pulp and paper industry was investigate. The cultivated area and abundance of each mentioned raw material (Wheat Straw, Sugarcane Bagasse, Poplars) were specified and the quality of their produced papers were compared in strength and opacity properties. Spruce species data was used for experiments comparisons. Regarding to environmental pollutions, low yield, inflexibility in wood and non-wood species resulted from the existent conventional processes of paper manufacturing, APMP is recommended due to high quality paper, desirable opacity properties, high yield and also the usage for all the raw materials.
Conclusion: The results of this study are encouraging for the development of a set of interpretable diagnostic criteria for a reasonably reliable identification of some species. The present study has been limited in the characteristics studied and was made on relatively poor photography. Further study on high quality photography, over wider areas and including such additional characteristics as crown texture and shadow intensity should prove useful. A preliminary examination has been made of some photo-image characteristics of a number of important tree species on large scale (1:9,000) contact prints of panchromatic mm. The characteristics studied were crown image tone, and shape. Image tone was estimated against a standard grey-scale and shows within-species consistency and a range between species. Crown shapes were subjectively assessed but there appears to be a within-species consistency and interpretable between-species differences. The results of this trial suggest that it should be practicable to make a number of important species distinctions by photo-interpretation with a useful degree of reliability. Other characteristics beside those studied might be usefully examined. Photography: Hand-printed glossy contact prints of vertical 1:9,000 scale panchromatic photography of Kwangnung Experimental Forest flown May 1964. The filter used is unknown (probably minus-blue). The camera is unknown but was probably a military type K-17 or K-22 with 6"(apostfophy) lens. The photography shows notably poor resolution. Species: 143 individual trees ranging through 11 species (7 softwood, 4 hardwood) were included in the study. A range of size classes were included for each species.
The effect of the treatment with CCFZ, FR-4, and PEG400 from butt end on the dimensional stability and bending properties was examined. Three softwood species such as red pine, Korean white pine and Japanese larch and three hardwood species such as poplar, alder and oak were investigated in this research. Shrinkage of red pine, Korean white pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400 decreased. However, there was no significant decrease of shrinkage in Japanese larch and oak. The decrease of shrinkage when moisture content changed from about 20% to 10% was larger than that at any other phase. In regard to the effect of treatment on bending properties, bending MOE and MOR of all specimens treated with PEG400 decreased significantly. Especially in the case of red pine, poplar, and alder treated with PEG400, bending MOR reduced 9%, 14%, and 12%, respectively. Reductions of MOR of the hardwood was also much larger than that of the softwood. However, in all species, treatment with CCFZ and FR-4 did not affect the change of bending MOE and MOR significantly. Comparing the large specimen which also included heartwood with the small specimen which included only treated sapwood, there was a difference in the change of bending MOE and MOR between them. The large specimens of Korean white pine, alder and Poplar, which had a relatively low proportion of sapwood(18~22%), showed the decrease of MOR by 11~13% more than that of small specimens, while red pine, Japanese larch and oak, which had a relatively high proportion of sapwood(35~40%), showed little decrease. It means that bending MOE and MOR of structural wood treated from butt end should be considered in terms of sapwood proportion as well as effect of treated chemicals.

The pulp yield was improved by about 4.5-5% when polysulfide (PS) and anthraquinone (AQ) were added to the kraft cooking liquor (white liquor). The exchange of the black liquor with fresh white liquor further increased the yield. The highest pulp yield was obtained when the PS cooking liquor containing 70% of total active alkali (AA) and 100% of AQ was used from the beginning of the reaction and the black liquor was exchanged with fresh white liquor containing the residual 30% of AA just after temperature reached $135^{\circ}C$. There was a good correlation between kraft pulp yields of a hardwood species and the ratios of the amount of xylose to glucose (X/G ratio), liberated by an acid hydrolysis of the pulps. However, the correlation was dependent on raw material wood species. Therefore, it is required in advance to establish a correlation between the yields and X/G ratios for raw material wood species of a target pulp in order to estimate pulp yield using X/G ratio. The X/G ratios of relatively high yield pulps showed higher values than those expected from the correlation. In a mill trial, the superiority of the PS-AQ isothermal cooking (ITC) process over the kraft ITC process was confirmed by examining X/G ratio of pulps obtained. The pulp yield in the PS-AQ ITC process was estimated at about 57.0%. This yield is very high, which indicates that reaction conditions of the PS-AQ ITC process are optimal.
