In this study, the lumen loading technology for preparing magnetic papers were evaluated. The rice husk fiber, softwood kraft pulp, hardwood kraft pulp were applied and the morphological properties of pits on the those fibers were investigated with SEM. The softwood kraft pulp had the bigger size of pits, $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ in diameter, which resulted in higher loading amount. The comparison of two methods for lumen loading such as the low concentration method with the disintegrator and the high concentration method with the Hobart mixer showed the Hobart mixer could resulted in the higher efficiency. The conditions of lumen loading process such loading time, addition amount of metal particles and addition of PEI were also evaluated. The magnetic hysteresis loop of handsheet samples made of lumen loaded fiber with $Fe_3O_4$ and $Fe_2O_3$ were examined. The differences in magnetic properties could be found according to the ferrite types.

Nalita wood(Trema orientalis) is one of the fastest growing woods in the world. It may be a viable species for pulpwood. The physical, chemical and morphological properties of Nalita were studied. The total lignin, pentosan and holocellulose content in Nalita wood were 24.7%, 22% and 81.2%, respectively. Its fiber length was about 0.92 mm, which are comparable to Acacia mangium. Nitrobenzene oxidation of Nalita wood meal indicated that the guaciayl and syringyl unit were the major constituent of Nalita lignin. Nalita produced 50% pulp yield at Kappa number 21 in soda-anthraquinone process. The strength properties of Nalita pulp were comparable to other tropical hardwood pulp. At $40_{\circ}$ SR, the breaking length, burst index, tear index and total energy absorption were 6000 m, $3.5kPa{\cdot}m^2/g\;and\;7.0mN{\cdot}m^2/g\;and\;75J/m^2$, respectively.
This report describes the wood anatomy and 1% safranine solution penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions of Anthocephalus chinensis belonging to the family Rubiaceae native to Bangladesh. The wood of this species was mostly characterized by diffuse porous, vessel with simple perforation plate, vestured alternate intervessel pittings, relatively medium vessel elements and fiber, and nonseptate fiber with distinctly bordered pits at radial wall. The body ray cell was procumbent with 2 to over 4 rows of upright and square marginal cells. Sometimes, the rays with procumbent, square and upright cells were mixed. Latewood fiber was thin to thick walled while it was very thin walled in earlywood. Axial parenchyma was diffuse, vasicentric, 5-8 cells per parenchyma strand dominantly present. Liquid penetration depth was observed in radial and longitudinal directions at moisture level of 7.42%. Longitudinal penetration was found 6.3 times higher than radial penetration. The initial penetration rate of safranine solution was high, but gradually decreased during the course of time. Different anatomical features were found to be responsible for the variation of safranine solution penetration depth compared to Gmelina arborea.

Pulping properties of the imported mixed eucalyptus chips and the domestic yellow poplar chips were investigated for comparing two chips as the raw materials for the hardwood chemical pulp. Soda-AQ (anthraquinone) pulping was applied for this study. The pulp from yellow poplar showed higher pulp yield than pulp from mixed eucalyptus, which comes from the lower hot-water soluble extractives and the higher polysaccharides in yellow poplar chips than those of the mixed eucalyptus chips. The yellow poplar pulp had higher average fiber length and fiber width than those of the mixed eucalyptus pulp, which led to the better respond to beating and the higher tear strength than those of the pulp from the mixed eucalyptus chips.

In this study, effects of alkali swelling at low concentration below 2 percent on properties of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) were elucidated. Swelling treatment of HwBKP was performed at various NaOH concentrations with/without beating. Then, the swelling characteristics of pulp fiber was evaluated by measuring the solvent retention values such as water retention value (WRV) and isopropyl alcohol retention value (LRV). It was found that fiber characteristics were influenced by NaOH swelling even at low alkali concentration and beating treatment as well. The values of WRV and LRV were decreased when the alkali concentration was increased. It is the result from the decreased acidic groups of pulp which were formed during beating. The acidic groups could be neutralized and then removed by alkali. The difference between WRV and LRV was decreased with increasing alkali concentration while the difference was increased when the alkali swollen pulp was beaten. In addition, the crystalline structure of HwBKP was almost not changed while the crystallinity was influenced by swelling treatment at a low alkali concentration.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood G. biloba, ring-porous wood A. altissima, and diffuse- porouswood D. kaki. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Radial flow speed was found highest in ray parenchyma of G. biloba. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of G. biloba was found the highest among all cells considered in D. kaki and A. altissima.

In this study, we investigated the physical properties of kraft pulps made from rice husk, peanut husk and garlic stems. These agricultural byproducts were collected individually, and then various pulps were manufactured from them by controlling active alkali, sulfidity, reaction time and the liquor ratio in the kraft pulping process in order to analyze the applicability of these agricultural byproducts as raw materials for kraft pulps. After kraft pulping, we measured yield, flake content, fiber length, fiber width and freeness of pulps, and the fiber shapes of the pulps were observed by using an optical microscope. When the higher active alkali, longer reaction time and lower liquor ratio were applied in kraft pulping process, reject content decreased and fiber yield increased. The pulp from garlic stems had the longest fiber length and that from rice husk showed the highest intial freeness. All of the pulps from agricultural byproducts showed higher initial freeness, shorter fiber length and the similar fiber width compared to OCC, BCTMP and hardwood BKP. The fibers of the pulps made from agricultural byproducts showed a similar shape to those of commercial pulps. It was concluded that these agricultural byproducts had a potential as raw materials to produce an alternative pulp to the commercial pulps.
Of the vast number of plant taxa in the world, the wood is one of the most useful resources. It is important to identify the fibers of wood and pulp for the plant taxonomy and for the uses, but we do not have enough information on them, on them, especially for the computerizd data. The fiber identification is one of the difficult tasks. In addition to the plant taxonomy and the fiber-using industries, such identification is also important in many other fields, including education. document examiners, etc. For these purpose, the fibers should be exactly distinguished. The TISS system I have programed to identify various woods would also be useful in the identification of fibers by the genus and species in the features of unknown samples and in searching the features of a species based on its scientific name. Such searching programs are being developed in many other countries with a view to searching for the species name by using the features of the cells of the woody materials. With the survey of all the available literature, the features of the fibers of 124 species both of softwood and hardwood were examined under the electron and optical microscopies. Each species were coded and carded by the feature, and the databases were built. The microscopic were inputted into a personal computer program called and by a slide film scanner. The new computer program called TISS 2 was developed using C computer language. Korean language fonts were added to the TISS 2. The TISS 2 can be in adding and searching a image of fiber features both of a known fiber and an unknown fiber. The databases were corded for the DELTA system with was developed by Dallwitz and Paine in Australia, 1986.

Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest among all cells considered in Anthocephalus cadamba and Fraxinus rhynchophylla In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest depth and the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.

The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Castanea crenata. The large vessel of Castanea crenata was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Betula davurica higher than the one of Castanea crenata.
