This study investigates the effects of long-term artificial-aging on hardness variation in the dissimilar metal weldments for nuclear power plant facilities. These dissimilar welds are inevitably required to join the components in nozzle parts of pressurized vessels, such as austenitic stainless steels and ferritic steels. A artificial thermal aging was conducted in an electrical furnace to simulate material degradation at high temperatures. The test materials were held at the temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ for 10000 hours and interrupted at various levels of degraded specimens. The degradation of hardness is a well-known phenomenon resulting from long-term aging or high-temperature degradation of structural materials. In this study, the variation of hardness at each position was different, and complicated in relation to microstructures such as twins, grains, precipitates, phase transformations, and residual stresses in dissimilar weldments. We discussed the variation of hardness in terms of microstructural changes during long-term aging.
This research conducted to investigate the variation of the moisture content, crack ratio, and hardness of the whole and cracked brown rice after conditioning at the initial moisture content of 13, 14, and 15% with time lapse. The conditioning was conducted by increasing the moisture content of the sample to 0.4 and 0.8%. For basic information and conditioning characteristics for the development of a conditioning machine for the brown rice, predicted models of above three properties were developed using a nonlinear regression analysis of SAS with Gauss-Newton, Gradient, and DUD methods. Results of this research could be summarized as follows. 1. No moisture variation occurred after 0.5 hour conditioning. 2. The increasement of the crack ratio was 7.6 and 17.5% with the sample increased the moisture content of 0.4 and 0.8%, respectively, after 8 hours conditioning. 3. The hardness of the conditioned whole grain of the brown rice decreased 0.82 and 1,000kg$\_$f/ with the sample increased moisture content 0.4 and 0.8%, respectively, after 8 hours conditioning with respect to the non-conditioned sample. 4. The hardness of the conditioned cracked grain of the brown rice decreased 0.54 and 0.81kg$\_$f/ with the sample increased moisture content 0.4 and 0.8%, respectively, after 8 hours conditioning with respect to the non-conditioned sample. The hardness of the broken grain was about 0.81∼1.88kg$\_$f/ lower than whole grain. 5. The moisture content variation, increasing rate of the crack ratio, and hardness of the cracked and whole grain was predicted as a negative exponential function. 6. Each predicted model with the nonlinear regression analysis, which was very accurate and had a very small amount of sum of square of error between experimental value and predicted value, which could be used for predicting the physical variation after conditioning.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the statistical properties of Vickers hardness (HV) for friction welded parts in a Ni-based super alloy (Alloy718). In the case of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) parts, hardness tests were repeated for three different applied loads, 100, 200, and 300 g, with a duration time of 10 seconds. The arithmetic means of the Vickers hardness in heat affected zone (HAZ) materials were smaller than those of the base metal (BM) in all of the applied loads. The coefficient of variation (COV) for the BM and HAZ decreased by increasing the applied load. The probability distribution of the Vickers hardness followed the Weibull distribution well. The distribution of the Vickers hardness was not found to be symmetric. The shape parameter and scale parameter increased by increasing the applied load at both the BM and HAZ.
A composite material consists of two or more different material layers. Copper clad aluminum composite materials are being used for economic and structural reasons. This study is concerned with experimental investigation in the direct extrusion of copper clad aluminum rods through conical dies. The suggestion are given for the proper extrudability of copper clad aluminum rods via hot direct extrusion. This paper presents the variation of flow state and hardness at a variable of extrusion ratio and semi-angle of die. By measuring after and before extrusion radius ratio of Cu sleeve and Al core, proportional flow state has been considered. And also by measuring hardness, through extrusion way, a variation of hardness has been considered.
Variation of welded-joint hardness and tensile strength of a accelerated-cooled fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic steel with heat input was investigated. In a weld heat-affected zone, a softened zone was formed and it had lower hardness than that of a base metal. While the width of a softened zone increased continuously with an increase of heat input up to 100kJ/cm. the minimum hardness in a softned zone was almost constant after a continuos decrease up to 60KJ/cm. Because of a softened zone, the welded-joint was fractured in the HAZ and its maximum reduction of tensile strength was about 20%. Measured welded-joint tensile strength and calculated minimum tensile strength in a welded-joint was almost same, which means that the plastic restraint of a softened zone did not occur in this experiment. It is believed that as a softened zone width-to-specimen thickness ratio is as high as 2~6 in this experiment, the plastic restraint effect does not occur. Theoretical analysis shows that the plastic restraint effect occurs only when the ratio is below 0.5.
The surface rolling method which is one of the plastic deformation processes increases the surface roughness with reduction of diameter and hardness. In this study, three NACHI 6000 ZZ bearing were used for surface rolling tool on a mild steel The following results have been obtained with the mild steel. 1) The load is major factor in getting fine surface roughness of roller finishing after grinding The optimal surface roughness of SS41 steel can be obtained at the contact pressure of 210 kgf/cm$^{2}$. 2) At the contact pressure range of 200kgf/cm$^{2}$-210kgf/cm$^{2}$ for optimal surface roughness, The surface hardness increased to Hv200-Hv240 from Hv 125 before surface rolling. 3) Within the diameter variation of 13 .mu.m the surface roughness and the surface hardness were increased, but out of variation of 14.mu.m. The surface roughness become worse and the surface hardness was increased.
In the present study, the Weibull statistical analysis using the Monte-Carlo simulation has been performed to investigate the micro-Vickers hardness measurement reliability considering the variability. Experimental indentation test were performed with a micro-Vickers hardness tester for as-received and quenching and tempering specimens in SCM440 steels. The distribution of micro-Vickers hardness is found to be 2-parameter Weibull distribution function. The mean values and coefficients of variation (COV) for both data set are compared with results based on Weibull statistical analysis. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulation was performed in order to evaluate the effect of sample size on the micro-Vickers hardness measurement reliability. For the parent distribution with shape parameter 30.0 and scale parameter 200.0 (COV=0.040), the number of sample data required to obtain the true Weibull parameters was founded by 20. For the parent distribution with shape parameter 10.0 and scale parameter 200.0 (COV=0.1240), the number of sample data required to obtain the true Weibull parameters was founded by 30.
Stellite 12 alloy-powders were overlaid on 410 stainless steel valve seat using plasma transferred arc(PTA) process. Variation of the microstructure, hardness, wear and corrosion of overlaid deposit with current change was investigated. The deposit showed hypoeutectic microstructure, which was consisted of primary cobalt dendrite and networked $M_7C_3$ type eutectic carbides. As current increased, the amount of eutectic carbide decreased and its dendritic secondary arm spacing increased. Hardness of the deposit was decreased with increase of current. Stress relief heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for two hours resulted in slight increase of hardness in the deposit and showed uniform hardness distribution in base metal without any hardened layer in HAZ. Specific wear decreased with increase of sliding distance. The deposit of high hardness with a lot of eutectic carbide showed relatively low specific wear. Initial corrosion current density of the deposit in 0.1N sulfuric acid was lower than those of 410 stainless steel, and showed a little variation with PTA current.
Heat-treatment is one of the core technologies to enhance various characteristics such as strength, hardness, toughness, abrasion resistance and fatigue resistance for the mold material. This paper focuses on characteristics of the laser heat-treatment according to the cylindrical bar diameter variation in case of the SM45C. From the results of the experiments, it has been observed that the maximum hardness is 744Hv when the power is 1630W and the travel of laser is 0.5m/min. And then, the hardness width, depth and microstructure were observed for characteristics. Finally, when the cylindrical bar diameter size grow, the hardness width decrease whereas hardness depth increase.
This study investigated the degree to which instrumental measurements explain the variation in pork loin tenderness as assessed by the sensory evaluation of trained panelists. Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBS) had a significant relationship with the sensory tenderness variables, such as softness, initial tenderness, chewiness, and rate of breakdown. In a regression analysis, WBS could account variations in these sensory variables, though only to a limited proportion of variation. On the other hand, three parameters from texture profile analysis (TPA)-hardness, gumminess, and chewiness-were significantly correlated with all sensory evaluation variables. In particular, from the result of stepwise regression analysis, TPA hardness alone explained over 15% of variation in all sensory evaluation variables, with the exception of perceptible residue. Based on these results, TPA analysis was found to be better than WBS measurement, with the TPA parameter hardness likely to prove particularly useful, in terms of predicting pork loin tenderness as rated by trained panelists. However, sensory evaluation should be conducted to investigate practical pork tenderness perceived by consumer, because both instrumental measurements could explain only a small portion (less than 20%) of the variability in sensory evaluation.
