High frequency induction heating (HFIH) is used in many industries and has a number of advantages, including reliability and repeatability. It is a non-contact method of providing energy-efficient heat in the minimum amount of time without using a flame. Recently, HFIH has been actively studied using the finite element method (FEM), however, these studies only focused on the accuracy of the analysis. In this paper, we can measure joule heat distributions by the electromagnetic analysis for HFIH and the temperature distribution from the heat transfer analysis by applying joule heat for a sprocket. The sprocket is heated over $850^{\circ}C$ due to joule heat and then cooled to under $200^{\circ}C$ by using cooling $20^{\circ}C$ water. These processes were used to calculate the FEM and then compared to our experimental results. The calculated outcome may be used to predict hardening depth in HFIH.

An irradiation hardening of Inconel 718 produced by selective laser melting (SLM) was studied based on the microstructural observation and mechanical behavior. Ion irradiation for emulating neutron irradiation has been proposed owing to advantages such as low radiation emission and short experimental periods. To prevent softening caused by the dissolution of γ' and γ" precipitates due to irradiation, only solution annealing (SA) was performed. SLM SA Inconel 718 specimen was ion irradiated to demonstrate the difference in microstructure and mechanical properties between the irradiated and non-irradiated specimens. After exposing specimens to Fe3+ ions irradiation up to 100 dpa (displacement per atom) at an ambient temperature, the hardness of irradiated specimens was measured by nano-indentation as a function of depth. The depth distribution profile of Fe3+ and dpa were calculated by the Monte Carlo SRIM (Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter)-2013 code under the assumption of the displacement threshold energy of 40 eV. A transmission electron microscope was utilized to observe the formation of irradiation defects such as dislocation loops. This study reveals that the Frank partial dislocation loops induce irradiation hardening of SLM SA Inconel 718 specimens.

Recently, with the high performance and efficiency of machine, there have been required the multi-functions in various machine parts, such as the heat resistance, the abrasion resistance and the stress resistance as well as the strength. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out to investigate the fatigue characteristics of high carbon steel (SM53C) experienced by high-frequency induction treatment. The influence of high-frequency induction treatment on fatigue limit was experimentally examined with the specialfocus on the variation of surface microstructure and the fatigue crack initiation and propagation through fractography. Also, the shape of hardening depth, hardened structure, hardness, and fatigue-fracture characteristics of SM53C composed by carbon steel are also investigated.
Specimens of stainless steel reactor internals were irradiated with 240 keV protons and 6 MeV Xe ions at room temperature. Nanoindentation constant stiffness measurement tests were carried out to study the hardness variations. An irradiation hardening effect was observed in proton- and Xe-irradiated specimens and more irradiation damage causes a larger hardness increment. The Nix-Gao model was used to extract the bulk-equivalent hardness of irradiation-damaged region and critical indentation depth. A different hardening level under H and Xe irradiation was obtained and the discrepancies of displacement damage rate and ion species may be the probable reasons. It was observed that the hardness of Xe-irradiated specimens saturate at about 2 displacement/atom (dpa), whereas in the case of proton irradiation, the saturation hardness may be more than 7 dpa. This discrepancy may be due to the different damage distributions.
A simplified numerical procedure to predict drawbead restraining forces(DBRF) has been developed based on the hybrid membrane/bending method which superposes bending effects onto membrane solutions. As a semi-analytical method, the new approach is especially useful to analyze the effects of various constitutive parameters. The present model can accommodate general anisotropic yield functions along with non-linear isotropic-kinematic hardening under the plane strain condition. For the preliminary results, several sensitivity analyses for the process and material effects such as friction, drawbead depth, hardening behavior including the Bauschinger effect and yield surface shapes on the DBRF are carried out.
A methodology is developed and used to evaluate the response sensitivity of the thermal systems to variations in their design parameters. Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed to decide the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment is considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method is applied to the sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameters are taken as the laser scan velocity and laser beam radius ( $r_{ b}$), and the sensitivities of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ are analyzed. These sensitivity results are obtained with another parameters fixed. To verify the numerical analysis results, hardened layer dimensions (width and depth) of the numerical analysis are compared with the experimental ones.nes.
This work was to investigate suitable tool steels for hardening using laser beam, and was studied on carbon tool steels and alloyed tool steels such as STC3 steel, STS3 steel, STD11 steel and SKH51 steel. The surface hardness of HV700-1000 and the hardening depth of 2-2.5mm were obtained on STC3 steel and STS3 steel, and HV800-1000 was obtained on SKH51 steel, but STD11 steel was not enough. Except STD11 steel, all steels used in this study can be hardened by laser quenching or laser rapid melting.
In this paper, a comparative study of the effects of soil modelling on the interaction between tunnelling in soft soil and adjacent piled structure is presented. Several three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed to study the deformation of pile caps and piles as well as tunnel internal forces during the construction of an underground tunnel. The soil is modelled by two material models: the simple, yet approximate Mohr Coulomb (MC) yield criterion; and the complex, but reasonable hardening soil (HS) model with hyperbolic relation between stress and strain. For the former model, two different values of the soil stiffness modulus ($E_{50}$ or $E_{ur}$) as well as two profiles of stiffness variation with depth (constant and linearly increasing) were used in attempts to improve its prediction. As these four attempts did not succeed, a hybrid representation in which the hardening soil is used for soil located at the highly-strained zones while the Mohr Coulomb model is utilized elsewhere was investigated. This hybrid representation, which is a compromise between rigorous and simple solutions yielded results that compare well with those of the hardening soil model. The compared results include pile cap movements, pile deformation, and tunnel internal forces. Problem symmetry is utilized and, therefore, one symmetric half of the soil medium, the tunnel boring machine, the face pressure, the final tunnel lining, the pile caps, and the piles are modelled in several construction phases.
In an attempt to make a numerical modeling of the nailed walls with a view to assess the stability has been used. A convenient modeling which can provide answers to nearly situ conditions is of particular significance and can significantly reduce operating costs and avoid the risks arising from inefficient design. In the present study, a nailing system with a excavation depth of 8 meters has been modeled and observed by using the three constitutive behavioral methods; Mohr Coulomb (MC), hardening soil (HS) and hardening soil model with Small-Strain stiffness ensued from small strains (HSS). There is a little difference between factor of safety and the forces predicted by the three models. As extremely small lateral deformations exert effect on stability and the overall deformation of a system, the application of advanced soil model is essential. Likewise, behavioral models such as HS and HSS realize lower amounts of the heave of excavation bed and lateral deformation than MC model.
We fabricated flanged outer races for wheel bearing units using 0.52%C clean steels, and then characterized and studied the transformation behavior. The outer races produced by hot forging and high frequency induction hardening in this study were analyzed through microstructural characterization using OM, SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffractometer and their microhardness depth profiles of the raceway contacted by balls were measured using MVH tester. The surface hardened layers with a uniform hardness profile in the raceway consisting of very fine martensite with sub-micron sized retained austenite could be formed for very short time during high frequency induction hardening after hot forging. The very fine martensite may be transformed on rapid cooling, from the inhomogeneous austenite nucleated on rapid heating in small particles of pearlitic cementite fragmentated by hot forging. On the other hand the sub-micron sized retained austenite may be chemically stabilized due to their extremely small size, from the small austenite nucleated at the grain boundaries.
