  • In the laser surface hardening process the geometrical parameters, especially the depth, of the hardened layer are utilized to assess the integrity of the hardening layer quality. Monitoring of this geometrical parameter ofr on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation, however, is an extremely difficult problem because the hardening layer is formed beneath a material surface. Moreover, the uncertainties in monitoring the depth can be raised by the inevitable use of a surface coating to enhance the processing efficiency and the insufficient knowledge on the effects of coating materials and its thicknesses. The paper describes the extimation results using neural network to estimate the hardening layer depth from measured surface temperanture and process variables (laser beam power and feeding velocity) under various situations. To evaluate the effec- tiveness of the measured temperature in estimating the harding layer depth, estimation was performed with or without temperature informations. Also to investigate the effects of coating thickness variations in the real industry situations, in which the coating thickness cannot be controlled uniform with good precision, estimation was done over only uniformly coated specimen or various thickness-coated specimens. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the hardening layer depth, temperature and process variables. The estimation results show the temperature informations greatly improve the estimation accuracy over various thickness-coated specimens.

  • In this paper, the hardening depth in Laser surface hardening process is estimated using a multilayered neural network. Input data of the neural network are surface temperature of five points, power and travelling speed of Laser beam. A FDM(finite difference method) is used for modeling the Laser surface hardening process. This model is used to obtain the network's training data sample and to evaluate the performance of the neural network estimator. The simulational results showed that the proposed scheme can be used to estimate the hardening depth on real time.

  • The relationship between eddy current response and case hardening depth has been studied on SM40C(KS D-3752) and SCM440(KS D-3711) steels which were surface hardened by high frequency induction hardening. The results obtained in this study were as follows ; 1) Case hardening depth was successfully measured by observing the eddy current impedance changes of each steel. The impedance decreased linearly with increasing case hardening depth. 2) For large impedance gradient between the hardened surface and core metal, the eddy current response was more sensitive to case hardening depth than for low impedance gradient.

  • An on-line measurement of the workpiece hardened depth in laser surface hardening processes is very much difficult to achieve, since the hardening process occurs in depth wise direction. In this paper, the hardened depth is estimated using a multilayered neural network. Input data of the neural network are the surface temperatures at arbitrary chosen five surface points, laser power and traveling speed of laser beam torch. To simulate the actual hardening process, a finite difference method(FDM) is used to model the process. Since this model yields the calculation results of the temperature distribution around the workpiece volume in the vicinity of the laser torch, this model is used to obtain the network's training data and laser to evaluate the performance of the neural network estimator. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can be used to estimate the hardened depth with reasonable accuracy.

  • In this study we tried to determine the work-hardening exponent using continuous indentation test. Work-hardening exponent, which was determined by Hollomon equation, in tensile test, is an important parameter to determine plastic deformation and brittle/ductile property of materials. For using Hollomon equation, true stress and true strain were defined by indentation depth and indentation load. Using them the new equation, which is constituted by indentation depth, indentation load and work-hardening exponent, was induced. Indentation depth was calibrated because of elastic deflection and pile-up/sink-in phenomena. Work-hardening exponents of various steels derived by it showed good agreement to the results of tensile tests. In addition to experiments, FEM simulation was accomplished to investigate changes of real contact depth with materials properties changes. Through this simulation it is concluded that the real contact depth is changed by Y/E value which affect the early stage of indentation, and work-hardening exponent which the latter stage.

  • This paper deals with the effects of silica fume content and polymer-binder ratio on the properties of ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar using silica fume and ethylene-vinyl acetate redispersible polymer powder instead of styrene-butadiene rubber latex to shorten the hardening time. The ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar was prepared with various silica fume contents and polymer-binder ratios, and tested flexural strength, compressive strength, water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth. As results, the flexural, compressive and adhesion strengths of the ultrarapid-hardening polymer-modified mortar tended to increase as increasing polymer-binder ratio, and reached the maximums at 4 % of silica fume content. The water absorption, carbonation and chloride ion penetration resistance were improved according to silica fume content and polymer-binder ratio.

  • SCM440 steels were nitrided using pulsed dc plasma combined with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) generated by 13.56 MHz rf power in order to enhance case hardening depth. The case hardening depth was increased with rf power. The effective case-depth with ICP at 900 watt was as 1.6 times as that nitrided without ICP. The hardening depth was also increased up to 1.45 times. The compound layers formed on top surface were dense and thin when pulsed dc plasma was combined with ICP.

  • In order to predict the case depth and case width in laser transformation hardening, a finite element method was used to analyze the temperature distribution on the material. Laser hardening of the specimens of SM45C and STE11steels was experimented by using the continuous wave CO$_{2}$ laser with the various travel speeds and the defocused Gaussian beam mode. Phosphate coating was adopted on the surface of SM45C to increase the absorption of 10.6 .mu. m laser energy. Experimental data show good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The maximum possible case depth can be predicted for the given laser hardening conditions, such as laser power, and travel speed.

  • Laser surface hardening is an effective technique used to improve the tribological properties and also to increase the service life of automobile components such as camshafts, crankshatfs, lorry brake drums and gears. High power $CO_2$ lasers and Nd:YAG lasers are employed for localized hardening of materials and hence are of potential application in the automobile industries. The heat is conducted rapidly into the bulk of the specimen causing self-quenching to occur and the formation of martensitic structure. In this investigation, the microstructure features occurring in Nd:YAG laser hardening SM45C steel are discussed with the use of optical microscopic and scanning electron microscopic analysis. Moreover, This paper describes the optimism of the processing parameters for maximum hardened depth of SM45C steel specimens of 3mm thickness by using CW Nd:YAG laser. Travel speed was varied from 0.6m/min to 1.0m/min. The maximum hardness and case depth fo SM45C steel are 780Hv and 0.4mm by laser hardening.

  • In this study, we derived work-hardening exponent using continuous indentation test technique. Continuous indentation test technique is a powerful method to evaluate mechanical properties, such as hardness, modulus, ${\sigma}-{\varepsilon}$ curves and etc. It has many merits conventional indentation test has. The relationship between true stress and mean contact pressure and between strain and indentation depth were derived. While the indenter pushes the materials, the region around the indenter is deflected elastically. It is called elastic deflection. And pile-up phenomenon related to plastic deformation around the indenter increased the contact depth, and sink-in phenomenon decreases. So we calibrated contact depth change by considering elastic deflection and pile-up/sink-in. Using calibrated contact depth we redefined the relationship between true stress and mean contact pressure and between strain and contact depth. Through these relationship we could derive work-hardening exponent by analyzing load-depth curves. And it showed good agreement with tensile test results.
