  • Laser direct patterning of the coated photoresist (PMER-NSG31B) layer was studied to make halftone dots on gravure printing roll. The selective laser hardening of photoresist by Ar-ion laser(wavelength: 333.6~363.8nm) was controlled by the A/O modulator. The coating thickness in the range of 5~11$\mu m$ could be obtained by using the up-down directional moving device along the vertically located roll. The width, thickness and hardness of the hardened lines formed under the laser power of 200~260㎽ and irradiation time of 4.4~6.6 $\mu$sec/point were investigated after developing. The hardened width increased as the coating thickness increased. Though the hardened thickness was changed due to the effect of the developing solution, the hardened layer showed good resistance to the scratching of 2H pencil. Also, the hardened minimum line widths of 10$\mu m$ could be obtained. The change of line width was also found after etching, and the minimum line widths of 6$\mu m$ could be obtained. The hardened lines showed the good resistance to the etching solution. Finally, the experimental data could be applied to make gravure halftone dots using the developed imaging process, successfully.

  • Effect of Mn addition on rolling contact fatigue of C-base induction hardened bearing steels has been investigated to develop inexpensive surface-hardened bearing steels with improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted in elasto-hydrodynamic lubricating conditions at a shaft speed of 5,000rpm, under max. Hertzian stress of $492kg/mm^2$. It was found in the C-Mn steels that effective depth of induction hardened layer and amount of retained austenite were slightly increased in comparison with those of C-base steels. finer interlamellar spacing of pearlite in the C-Mn steels was also observed using TEM. Decomposition of retained austenite during rolling contact fatigue was smaller in quantity in the C-Mn steels than C-base steels. This might be associated with enhanced mechanical stability of retained austenite with addition of Mn. Statistical analysis of fatigue life for C-Mn steels using Weibull distribution indicated that improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue was mainly attributed to transformation induced plasticity and mechanical stability of retained austenite.

  • The effective case depth for case-hardened rolling bearing has been discussed. For this purpose, rolling contact fatigue tests for ball bearings built with inner race of various hardness values were conducted until L10 calculating rating life using a bearing life test machine under radial loading. Then, the distribution of residual stress below the inner raceway, which depended on the hardness value, was measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result, the linear relationship was established between the hardness value of the inner race and the theoretical shear stress evaluated at the depth where the residual stress disappeared below the inner raceway. Based on the relationship, it could be found that the factor of safety in bearing manufacturer’s rules for the effective case depth of case hardened rolling bearings was set higher. However, it could be also found that the hardness values at the depth where the maximum shearing stress acted below the raceway surface in a tapered roller bearing hardened by the carburizing process, were not sufficient for preventing plastic deformation under the basic dynamic load rating. Consequently, further efforts were still required to reduce or to disperse the contact load on the material design of a rolling bearing in order to prolong its life.

  • This study has been performed to investigate into some effects of power density and traverse speed of laser beam on optical microstructure, hardness and wear characteristics of gray cast iron treated by laser surface hardening technique. Optical micrograph has shown that large martensite and a small amount of retained austenite appear in outermost surface layer with fine martensite in inside hardened zone. Hardness measurements have revealed that the range of maximun hardness value is $Hv=650{\pm}15$ and as the power density increases and the traverse speed decreses, the depth of hardened zone increases due to as increase in input power density. Wear test has exhibited that wear rasistance of laser surface hardened specimen is superier compared to that of untreated specimen under the condition of same load at a given sliding distance, showing that absorption results of an wxidized substance due to a heavy abrasion appear in untreated specimen. The amount of weight loss of laser surface hardened specimen with respect to sliding distance at a given load decreses with increasing traverse speed at a given power density and with increasing power density at a given traverse speed.

  • The successful completion of the present research would be achieved using ground waste glass (GWG) microparticles in self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Here, the influences of GWG microparticles as cementing material on mechanical and durability response properties of SCC are investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate the hardened mechanical properties, percentage of water absorption, free drying shrinkage, unit weight and Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) of binary blended concrete with partial replacement of cement by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 wt% of GWG microparticles. Besides, slump flow, V-funnel, L-box, J-ring, GTM screen stability, visual stability index (VSI), setting time and air content tests were also performed as workability of fresh concrete indicators. The results show that the workability of fresh concrete was increased by increasing the content of GWG microparticles. The results showed that using GWG microparticles up to maximum replacement of 15 % produces concrete with improved hardened strengths. From the results, when the amount of GWG increased there was a gradual decrease in ASR expansion. Results showed that it is possible to successfully produce SCC with GWG as cementing material in terms of workability, durability and hardened properties.

  • This paper reveals the effect of the effective case depth(ECD) on the fatigue behavior of a high-frequency induction hardened SM45C in rotated bending fatigue test. In addition, the effects of fracture modes(surface origin type, inner origin type) on it are discussed. The fatigue limit of the induction hardened steel is remarkably increased compared with that of base metal. In addition, the fatigue limit is linearly increased as the effective casedepth grows deep in the region of this experiment (ECD/R;0.23-0.49). The S-N curve and fracture mode in the induction case hardened steel are classified into two kinds, as a result : N$_{f}$<10$^{5}$ ;surface origin type fracture(at high stress), N$_{f}$>10$^{5}$ ; in ner origin type fracture(at low stress). In case of inner origin type fracture; as the effective case depth(ECD) gets deep, the fatigue limit is increased by the reason that the fracture origin moves toward center; in reverse, is decreased by reason that the compressive residual stress gets low. As a result, the increasing effect of the former is much bigger than the decreasing effect of the latter, and the fatigue limit is increased as the ECD gets deep.eep.

  • Effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of hardened and austempered 3.60wt%C - 2.50wt%C ductile cast iron were investigated. Strength and hardness were increased and ductility was decreased as the amount of alloying element increased. The increasing effect of copper addition on the strength was the most pronounced. The strength and hardness were greatly increased and ductility was decreased by hardening. The effect of alloying element on the mechanical properties of the hardened ductile cast iron was not so pronounced due to the high contents of C and Si. The strength and hardness of austempered ductile cast iron were greatly increased, meanwhile the difference of strength from that of hardened one was not so big. The ductility of the former was higher than that of the latter. The strength and ductility of austempered ductile cast iron with 0.25%Mn were the maximum of all Mn added ones. The maximum strength of that was obtained with the addition of 0.80wt%Cu or 2.00wt%Ni along with this amount of Mn added.

  • This study proposes the physical properties of the hardened lightweight cement using the polyethylene tube and to make the fundamental data regarding a new lightweight concrete development. The aerated concrete is displaying various effects such as lightweight, insulation characteristic and it is coming to be widely applied the slab layer of apartment as an insulating material but currently the aerated concrete has many problems. Therefore, demonstrating similar property of former aerated concrete and improving the defects, developing new hardened cement is needed. In this study, we predict adopting possibility of hollow core polyethylene tube, as a material to make cement hardening containing a lot of void. So we changed the mixing ratio, a diameter and length of the polyethylene tube and improved the compressive strength and unit capacity weight of the lightweight cement hardening body. From the test results, we judge that the aerated concrete is a developmental possibility.

  • This study showed the development process of structural design method of BHB(Blast Hardened Bulkhead) which are applicable in preliminary design stage. In the previous 1st report, the simplified structural scantling equations of BHB were formulated theoretically using the modified plastic hinge method supplemented by considering the membrane effects due to large plastic deformation. And the scantling methodology of plate thickness and section area of stiffeners of the curtain plate type BHB was dealt with. In the present 2nd report, derivation process of the correction factors which can adjust the developed scantling equations considering the uncertainties contained in the design parameters was introduced. Considering the actual BHB structures of 3 warship, the correction factors for the developed scantling equations for curtain plate type BHB were derived. Finally the applicability, validity of them and the strategy of future improvement were considered.

  • Blast Hardened Bulkheads (BHB) are used to suppress damage propagation by internal explosions to reduce ships'vulnerability. However, for this reason, the weight of the ship inevitably increased, and other functions such as the ships'mobility were bound to deteriorate. Therefore, it is essential in the initial design of the ship to optimize the dimensions of the bulkhead to minimize the weight while decreasing the vulnerability of the ship. Research on design optimization of BHB has been conducted, but it has not considered explosive load in various hit scenarios. This study proposed an optimal design method for the curtain plate type blast hardened bulkhead, which is currently frequently applied by the Korean Navy in consideration of various hit scenarios. Using genetic algorithms, multiobjective design optimizations that minimize weight increase as well as minimize damage to ships were obtained. By optimizing the dimensions of the BHB considering various hit scenarios, the ship's vulnerability was improved while maintaining its mobility due to weight reduction.
