Analytical models for the prediction of the size of hardened zone in laser surface hardening are presented. The models are based on the solutions to the problem of three-dimensional heat flow in plates with infinite thickness. The validity of the model was tested on medium carbon steel for Gaussian mode of beam. Then the model for rectagular beam was used for the predicition of the size of hardened zone on various hardening process parameters. From the calculation results it appeared that the size and shape of the hardened zone are strongly dependent on process parameters such as beam mode, beam size, and traverse speed.
Roughing of tool steel in its hardened state represents a real challenge in the die and meld industry and process improvement depends on research of tool material, coating technique, and lubrication. However, roughing of hardened steels generates extreme heat and without coolant flooding, tool material cannot withstand the high temperature without choosing the right tools with proper coating. This research conducted milling tests using coated ball end mills to study effects of cutting conditions and geometric parameters of ball end mills on the machinability of hardened tool steel. KP4 steel and STD 11 heat treated steels were used in the dry cutting as the workpiece and TiAIN coated ball end mills with side relief angle of 12$^{\circ}$ was utilized in the cutting tests. Cutting forces, tool wear, and surface roughness were measured in the cutting tests. Results from the experiments showed that 85 m/min of cutting speed and 0.32 mm/rev of feed rate were optimum conditions for better surface finish during rough cutting and 0.26mm/rev with the same cutting speed are optimum conditions in the finish cutting.

It is well known that concrete is typical porous material. We pay attention to Hansen's idea that concrete may be expected to act as semi-permeable membrane, and report the effect of concentration of solution and temperature on water flux in forward osmosis. In order to measuring volume of water flux from distilled water to solution of sodium chloride through hardened cement paste, specially designed apparatus was constructed, and the following result were obtained: (1) hardened cement paste acts as semi-permeable membrane, consequently, water flux in forward osmosis may occur. (2) Rate of water flux is proportion to concentration of dilute solution, and this suggests hardened cement paste is agreeable to the theory of membrane. (3) Effect of temperature on water flux is agreeable to Arrehenius equation and is great.

This paper presents the performance of CBN tools in the machining of hardened die-materials, SKD11 and SKD61 steel with HRC 50, by high-speed face milling. Generally, grinding or EDM is being used in machining of hardened materials but the cost is very high. If those can be replaced by cutting, it will be a greatly economical advantage. CBN tool has been recognized as an effective tool in turning, but it has not been in milling. So wear and surface roughness mode of CBN tool for hardened SKD11 and SKD61 steel were investigated by high-speed face milling in this study Also the relation between cutting force and wear mode of CBN tools was investigated.
The laser beam hardening has been experimentally tried to find the hardened characteristics of STD11. Experiment was performed on the optimum hardening condition with 2kW $CO_2$ laser. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed using the microscope. The hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 720 Hv, however, the deoxidation was observed under the surface of hardened area. The case depth of hardened zones is about 0.6mrn and case width is 4mm. FEM-simulation on laser surface hardening of STD11 steel are described. With the proper assumption of the absorbed energy density, the calculated case depth and width in 2 kW $CO_2$ laser hardening were in good agreement with the experimental result. It was found that there is optimum absorbed energy density of STD11.
Slipforming is a construction method in which the forms move continuously during concrete placement. This paper presents a numerical procedure based on the finite element method to simulate the thermal behavior of concrete during slipforming operations. The validity of the model was successfully tested by simulating a very complex but well documented field case of actual slipforming operations performed during the construction of an offshore concrete oil platform structure. The results obtained have been related to the shape of the concrete "hardened front" in the forms, which allows quick evaluation of the operation. The results of the numerical investigation have shown that the shape of the "hardened front" can be affected by the temperature of the fresh concrete and ambient conditions. For a given initial concrete temperature, there are limitations for the ambient temperature that, when exceeded, can create an unfavorable shape of the concrete "hardened front" in the forms. Similarly, for a given ambient temperature, the initial concrete temperature should not be fall below an established limit in order to avoid unfavorable shape of the "hardened front".
Contact tip is located so near to welding arc that it is heated to high temperature during long time welding. In such a situation, tip changes in its microstructure and in turn its mechanical properties. This study was intended to investigate those changes by using simulated heat treatment. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that tip of Cu-P alloy hardened with severe cold deformation lose its initial hardness to a large extent within 60 min due to the occurrence of rapid recrystallization while that of Cu-Cr composition hardened by proper aging treatment can preserve its intial hardness for about 1,000 min or longer. Based on these results, suggested was a guideline that can classify contact tips into two different grades: deformation-hardened type and precipitation-hardened type. Following a guideline, a tip with Cu-Cr composition can be classified into the deformation-hardened type if it is in the over-aged condition. Such a guideline is well described.

An instrumentation amplifier (IA) and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are essential circuit blocks for accurate and robust sensor readout systems. This paper introduces recent advances in radiation-hardening by design (RHBD) techniques applied for the sensor readout integrated circuits (IC), e.g., the three-op-amp IA and the successive-approximation register (SAR) ADC, operating against total ionizing dose (TID) and singe event effect (SEE) in harsh radiation environments. The radiation-hardened IA utilized TID monitoring and adaptive reference control to compensate for transistor parameter variations due to radiation effects. The radiation-hardened SAR ADC adopts delay-based double-feedback flip-flops to prevent soft errors which flips the data bits. Radiation-hardened IA and ADC were verified through compact model simulation, and fabricated CMOS chips were measured in radiation facilities to confirm their radiation tolerance.

Settlement with crack on the hardened liners may occur in the weak clay due to waste load since the stiffness of the hardened liner is greater than that of the clay layers. Way of reducing deformation crack in the hardened liner is investigated using two computer programs, CONSOL and FLAC. The computer program CONSOL estimates the magnitude of settlement with time in clay layers and FLAC analyses the stress and deformation relationship between the foundation of landfill and waste load. The results show that a representative block of the analyzed area reaches the consolidation settlement of 1.32m, 8.8 years after the disposal of waste started with the degree of consolidation U=90%. The stress within the hardened liner exceeds the allowable vertical stress of 5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and horizontal stress of 1.67kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the concave part of the liner where the main and branch drainage pipes of leachate are located. It was recognized that the thickness of the interested area should be enlarged or the strength of the same area should be improved to tolerate the planned waste load.

In this paper hardened SCM440 material and annealed SCM440 material are for cutting experiments by the cutting con-dition which is chosen respectively by tool three components of cutting force are recorded using multicorder, Then the surface roughness for various force are measured by Roughness Tester. The results of the experiment are summarized as follow. The hardened material cut by ceramic tool(BX20) gives the highest radial component values among the cutting resistance radial components is increased higher for the higher cutting speed even though vertical component and axial component tend to decrease. But when the annealed material was cut increase in cutting speed results in the increase of three component forces. Since ceramic insert tip used the experiment hardly affect Built-up Edge and heat the cutting resistance decrease slightly regardless of the increased of cutting speed. The hardened material has higher three compo-nent force value than the annealed material because the material of high hardness is increased cutting resistance. The low-est cutting forces for hardened material and annealed material are shown in the cutting speed of 60m/min and 180m/min. respectively.
