  • Fe-base amorphous alloy and two crystalline phases composite were fabricated. The effect of temperature and strain rate on mechanical properties was evaluated utilizing compression test. Mixture of non-crystalline and crystalline phases were found using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) tests. Based on glass transition temperature and crystallization temperature. compression tests were performed in the temperature ranging from $560^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ with $20^{\circ}C$ interval. Relationship between microstructure, including fracture surface morphology, and mechanical behavior was studied. The peak stress of Fe-base amorphous alloy was over 2GPa and expected to have a good wear resistance, but it is expected hard to deform because of low ductility. The peak stress and elongation of two crystalline phases composite was over 1GPa and about 20%, therefore it is possible to deform high strength wear resistant materials such as engine valve.

  • The addition of cyclo propane carbonyl (cpc) to chromium electroplating bath resulted in a chromium deposit which had greatly improved mechanical properties compared to conventional chromium deposits in condition of heat treatment at high temperature. The as-deposited layers had a Vicker's hardness of about 1170, which is comparable to that of conventional chromium plating deposits. With annealing, the hardness goes through a maximum of 1650 at $600^{\circ}C$. Generally speaking, the hardness of conventional plating decreases monotonically with heat treatment. X-ray diffraction show that annealing up to above $400^{\circ}C$ causes formation and growth of chromium crystallites and that chromium carbides form at above $500^{\circ}C$ temperature.

  • A corrosion resistance and hard nitrocarburized layer was distinctly formed on 310 austenitic stainless steel substrate by DC plasma nitrocarburizing. Basically, 310L austenitic stainless steel has high chromium and nickel content which is applicable for high temperature applications. In this experiment, plasma nitrocarburizing was performed in a D.C. pulsed plasma ion nitriding system at different temperatures in $H_2-N_2-CH_4$ gas mixtures. After the experiment structural phases, micro-hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated by the optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness testing and Potentiodynamic polarization tests. The hardness of the samples was measured by using a Vickers micro hardness tester with the load of 100 g. XRD indicated a single expanded austenite phase was formed at all treatment temperatures. Such a nitrogen and carbon supersaturated layer is precipitation free and possesses a high hardness and good corrosion resistance.

  • The introduction of two-grid inside a conventional process system produces a reactive coating deposition and increases metal ion ratio in the plasma, resulting in denser and smoother films. The corrosion behaviors of TiN coatings were investigated by electrochemical methods, such as potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution. Electrochemical tests were used to evaluate the effect of microstructure on the corrosion behavior of TiN coatings exposed to a corrosive environment. The crystal structure of the coatings was examined by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and the microstructure of the coatings was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM). In the potentiodynamic polarization test and EIS measurement, the corrosion current density of TiN deposited by two grid-attached magnetron sputtering was lower than TiN deposited by conventional magnetron type and also presented higher Rct values during 240 h immersion time. It is attributed to the formation of a dense microstructure, which promotes the compactness of coatings and yields lower porosity.

  • Diamonds have been widely employed as polishing media for precise machining and noble substrates for microelectronics. The recent development of the split sphere press has led to the enhancement of low quality natural diamonds. Synthesized and treated diamonds are sometimes traded deceptively as high quality natural diamonds because it is hard to distinguish among these diamonds with conventional gemological characterization method. Therefore, we need to develop a new identification method that is non-destructive, fast, and inexpensive. We proposed using new methods of UV fluorescence and X-ray Lang topography for checking the local HPHT stress field to distinguish these diamonds from natural ones. We observe unique differences in the local stress field images in treated diamonds using UV fluorescence and Lang topography characterization. Our result implies that our proposed methods may be appropriate for identification of the treated diamonds.

  • The use of computed tomography for dental procedures has increased recently. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems have been designed for imaging hard tissues of the dentomaxillofacial region. CBCT is capable of providing high resolution in images of high diagnostic quality. This technology allows for 3-dimensional representation of the dentomaxillofacial skeleton with minimal distortion, but at lower equipment cost, simpler image acquisition and lower patient dose. Because this technology produces images with isotropic sub-millimeter spatial resolution, it is ideally suited for dedicated dentomaxillofacial imaging. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of cone beam scanning technology and compare it with the fan beam scanning used in conventional CT and the basic principles of currently available CBCT systems.

  • FeN thin films were deposited on glass by RF diode reactive sputtering. The films were annealed in the air and in vacuum. The film annealed in the air showed sharp decrease of saturation magnetization and change of easy axis direction to hard axis direction and vice versa after $300^{\circ}C$ anneal. The coercivity decreased down to 0.5 Oe after $400^{\circ}C$ anneal. After $450^{\circ}C$ anneal, the film showed ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}N$ phase. The films annealed in vacuum showed coercivity increase after $300^{\circ}C$ anneal for the film deposited with initial substrate temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ and after $400^{\circ}C$ anneal for the film deposited with initial substrate temperatue of $170^{\circ}C$. These films showed $Fe_{16}N_{2}$ X-ray peaks after $450^{\circ}C$ anneal.

  • Electrically assisted pressure joining (EAPJ) utilizes electric current-induced kinetic enhancement to achieve solid state diffusion bonding within a short time. In this study, aluminum alloy specimens, which are known as a hard-to-weld metal, were successfully solid-state joined through EAPJ. The bonding process was performed in two ways: continuous direct current (CDC), which applies relatively low current density, and pulsed direct current (PDC), which applies high current density. It was observed that the bonding strength was higher in PDC than in CDC. The microstructure of the joint was characterized using 3D X-ray microscopy (XRM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).

  • In this study, residual stress and surface roughness were investigated experimentally to evaluate surface integrity on surface layer machined by CBN, ceramics and WC cutting tools. When machining difficult-to-cut material (hardened STD11 steel $H_{R}$C 60), residual stresses remaining in machined surface layer were mainly compressive. The increase of flank wear caused a shift of the compressive residual stress maximum to greater workpiece depths, but the changes did not penetrate the workpiece beneath a depth of 300 .mu. m. Surface roughness was influenced considerably by variations of the cutting speed and feed. In machining hard material, CBN and A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$ ceramics cutting tool materials proved significantly superior to mixed ceramics A1$_{2}$ $O_{3}$-TiC and WC in evaluation of surface integrity.y.

  • We present preliminary results of the VLA archival HI data of local AGN hosts. The sample consists of the galaxies selected from the Swift-BAT hard X-ray survey. The main goal is to probe the gas environment of the sample in order to verify the role of gas accretion as one of the major AGN triggering mechanisms. HI, as a mostly diffuse and extended gas component in many galaxies, is a sensitive tracer to explore the impact of the surroundings on galaxies. In this work, we therefore probe the HI imaging data of a subsample of BAT-BASS AGN hosts, starting with the cases for which relatively high HI fluxes have been reported from the past single-dish observations. Based on their resolved HI properties, we will discuss the possibility of gas accretion and its role in powering AGNs in these examples.
