  • The purpose of this study was to develop an impact force measurement device in order to facilitate the acquisition of quantitative data for the analysis of various sporting events. The device was designed to include cylindrical aluminum supports of 220 mm diameter, which allows mounting and dismounting of the device on walls and frames. In addition, a hard sponge for impact absorption, as well as 4 springs, were attached to the plate. Both were attached to prevent psychological variables and injuries. When a subject applies force on the device, accurate data about the maximum repulsive force is acquired in real time, with a lag of only 0.001 s. The device was calibrated in four steps: (1) increase, (2) increase, (3) increase-decrease, and (4) increase-decrease. The maximum relative expanded uncertainty was 0.166%, indicating that the impact force measurement was sufficiently reliable. The proposed device can be applied to various sporting situations and is expected to be useful for studying kinetics.

  • Baked black soybean has great nutritional value, so it is a great potential ingredient in cake. To find an acceptable ingredient ratio, baked black soybean powder was to wheat flour in different experimental groups. The control was pure wheat flour, and the experimental groups had 0 (control), 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% baked black soybean powder added. The baked black soybean powder consists of moisture (4.88%), crude protein (34.46%), crude fat (11.35%), crude ash (4.84%), and carbohydrates (44.47%). The specific gravity, spreadability, and baking loss increased with an increase in the amount of baked black soybean powder, but specific volume decreased. The 'L' and 'b' chromaticity values of a sponge cake decrease with increased amounts of added baked black soybean powder. The texture becomes more hard and stuff with added baked black soybean powder, but springiness decreases. A sensory test found the best experimental group to be that of 20% powder added.

  • Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of hard board applied to acute low back pain patient by using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Score(PRS). Methods From March. 2005 to October. 2005, 20 cases of acute low back pain were divided into 2 groups in sequence. Control group took a rest on the bed(marble-sponge mattress) and sample group took a rest on the hard board. Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Score(PRS) were used to assess the change of pain. VAS and PRS were checked 3 times before the treatment, after 3day treatment and 6day treatment. Results 1. After 3day and 6day treatment, there was statistical significance between control and sample group by VAS. 2. After 3day and 6day treatment, there was statistical significance between control and sample group by PRS. Conclusions On treating acute low back pain, it is more effective taking a rest on the hard board than taking a rest on the bed. Further study is needed about effects of hard board applied to acute low back pain patient.

  • Sponges of the family Irciniidae are poorly known in Korean waters. This paper describes a new species of new genus, Bergquistia coreana n. sp. in the family Irciniidae (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida) from Jejudo Island, Korea from 1998 to 1999. Bergquistra n. gen. is characterized by extremely simple fasciculated and uncored primary fibres. However, in the choano-somal region, primary fibres are made of wider clear web. Secondary fibres form a very thin regular uncored network. The sponge surface has thick and regular conules. The colour is beige throughout the sponge, and the texture is slightly hard and compressible. Thickness of filament is variable.

  • This study deals with the vibration ride quality for passenger car when running on straight highway at the speed of 70km/h. Ten accelerations were measured at four positions, three axes each at the feet, hip, and head, and one axis at the back. Five seats that have different static sponge stiffness were used, and two subjects were participated. These accelerations were analyzed to produce the ride values such as component ride value and overall ride value. It was hard to see the difference of ride value by the change of sponge stiffness. However we could rank the ride quality by the total vibration exposed to passengers. From the transfer function between the hip and the foot, the fundamental mode was observed to be around 5.8Hz. Also the transfer function between the head and hip was studied. The optimal damping ratio of the seat was calculated according to the seat natural frequency with human weighting filter which makes the optimal damping ratio different from that without weighting filter.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the differneces in milling, physicochemical, rheological and end-product properties between Korean and American wheat cultivars. Also, rheological and bread baking properties of Korean wheat flour in blends with U.S. standard flour were investigated. The milling yield of Korean wheat rated 71.1% similar to 71.6% of U.S. wheat. The average AWRC 61.8% of the three Korean wheats ranked higher than the conventional value of 60% for classifying hard and soft wheat. The cookies made from Korean wheat flour showed comparatively good spread with diameter of 8.5-8.9 cm, and marked recommendable top grain score. The volume ranges 975-1175 cc of sponge cake made from all cultivars tested were lower about 4-26% than that of standard cake flour. especially, Wonkwang was selected as one which has special characteristics good for cookie and sponge cake. The volumes of breads from Korean wheat 리ours ranged 924-1020 cc, and Yongkwang of 1020cc marked the most appropriate characteristics for bread-making among the tested wheats. The proper blending ratio of Korean wheat flour to U.S. bread standard flour was revealed 30% in bread-making.

  • We describe Ophichthus asakusae from Korea based on a single specimen (426.0 mm TL) collected from the southern sea off Jeju Island. The species is characterized by a pointed, hard, sponge-like tail tip without a caudal fin and 126-132 total vertebrae. We propose a new Korean name, "Je-ju-ba-da-baem" for the species.

  • Measurement of cardiac output during exercise by noninvasive technique is very needed in the area of sports medicine. However there are only two noninvasive techniques, one of which is $CO_2$ subscript rebreathing technique and the other one is impedance cardiography. While $CO_2$ rebreathing technique needs special breathing and metablic steady state, impedance cardiography has motion Uiiau problem. In this study maior sources of the mothion artifact during treadmill exercise was found experimentally to. be the impact caused by each step on the treadmill. Thus special shoes to reduce the impact were developed. These are the shoes with silicon rubber and hard sponge attached to the soles. It was possible to measure cardiac output with the newly developed shoes for Burke protocol whose speed of the treadmill was constant 3.5 miles/hour while it was impossibel with the conventional exercise shoes.

  • Ceramics have some properties that are unmatched by other kind of materials like metals or polymers. The ability of high thermal and chemical resistance and in case of being superior in specific mechanical properties makes the ceramic materials suitable for arange of applications. The microstructure and morphology of a material arguably permit the use of many advanced application otherwise difficult to achieve.Porous structures have some important applications in biomedical and environmental field. For human hard tissue reconstruction and augmentation procedure suitable biomaterials are used with a desirable porosity. A range of porous bioceramics were fabricated with tailored design to meet the demand of specific applications. Channeled and interconnected porosity was introduced in alumina, zirconia, and hydroxyapatite or tri calcium phosphate ceramics by different methods like multi-pass extrusion process, bubble formation in viscous slurry, slurry dripping in immiscible liquid, sponge replica method etc. The detailed microstructural and morphological investigations were carried out to establish the unique features of each method and the developed systems. For environmental filters the porous structures were also very important. We investigated a range of channeled and randomly porous silicon based ceramic composites to enhance the material stability and filtration efficiency by taking advantage of the material chemistry of the element. Detailed microstructural and mechanical characterizations were carried out for the fabricated porous filtration systems.
