  • In order to do a maintenance task, a maintenance operator should learn the basic skills of the maintenance task such as assembly and disassembly (A/D). However, the key of the learning process is to learn the A/D task intuitively and naturally. Haptic guidance promises to give effectiveness and benefit qualitatively since a person can be trained to do the optimal task based on information that comes from an expert, database, or intelligent algorithms. By applying haptic guidance, a maintenance training process can be made more intuitive and natural in a virtual environment. This paper describes the development of a maintenance training system by using haptic guidance.

  • Haptic device can be a useful rehabilitation tool in balance training. The proposed system is composed of a body-wear smartphone, Phantom Omni(R) device, and its control PC system. Ten young healthy subjects performed balance tasks with different postures during 30 seconds with their eyes closed. An Android program on the smartphone transferred mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) tilt angles to the PC system, which can generate haptic command through haptic device. Statistical data analysis was performed using MATLAB(R). COP (Center of Pressure) related indexes were measured to see reduction in body sway. ANOVA showed that haptic device significantly reduced body sway. Intuitive balance guidance could be generated using an economical and small-sized commercial haptic device, making the system efficient.

  • During the last decade, several Electronic Orientation Aids devices have been proposed to solve the autonomy problems of visually impaired people. When hearing is considered the primary sense for Visually Impaired people (VI) and it is generally loaded with the environment, the use of tactile sense can be considered a solution to transmit directional information. This paper presents a new wearable haptic system based on four motors implemented in shoes, while six directions can be played. This study aims to introduce an interface design and investigate an appropriate means of spatial information delivery through haptic sense. The first experiment of the proposed system was performed with 15 users in an indoor environment. The results showed that the users were able to recognize, with high accuracy, the directions displayed on their feet. The second experiment was conducted in an outdoor environment with five blindfolded users who were guided along 120 meters. The users, guided only by the haptic system, successfully reached their destinations. The potential of tactile-foot stimulation to help VI understand Electronic Orientation Aids (EOA) instructions was discussed, and future challenges were defined.

  • We introduce a learning system for the sight reading of simple drum sequences. Sight reading is a cognitive-motor skill that requires reading of music symbols and actions of multiple limbs for playing the music. The system provides knowledge of results (KR) pertaining to the learner's performance by color-coding music symbols, and guides the learner by indicating the corresponding action for a given music symbol using additional auditory or vibrotactile cues. To evaluate the effects of KR and guidance cues, three learning methods were experimentally compared: KR only, KR with auditory cues, and KR with vibrotactile cues. The task was to play a random 16-note-long drum sequence displayed on a screen. Thirty university students learned the task using one of the learning methods in a between-subjects design. The experimental results did not show statistically significant differences between the methods in terms of task accuracy and completion time.

  • Robotic devices have been widely used in many medical applications due to their accuracy and programming ability. One of the applications is a virtual reality medical simulator, which trains medical personnel in a computer generated environment. In this paper, we are going to present an application, an epidural anesthesia trainer. Because performing epidural injections is a delicate task, it demands a high level of skill and precision from the physician. This trainer uses a robotic device and computer controlled solenoid valve to recreate interaction forces between the needle and the various layers of tissues around the spinal cord. The robotic device is responsible for generation of interaction forces in real time and can be used to be haptic guidance that allows the user to follow a previous recorded expert procedure and feel the encountered forces.

  • Disaster robots have accepted tele-operation in order to share the intelligence of human operators and robot systems. Virtual wall is one of the tele-operation technology to support recognition of human operator. If the virtual wall can block the robot from dangers, the operator will feel comfortable and can concentrate on fundamental missions. In this paper, we proposes and compares three methods for virtual wall visualization in tele-operation using 3D reconstruction. First is a virtual wall visualized only with edges. A wall filled with transparent color is the second method. Finally, third method is a texture-mapped virtual wall. In the experiments, we discuss their merits and demerits in view of robot tele-operation.
