  • A study was conducted to investigate the availability of Fitts' Law to Hangul input systems on mobile phones. Three different Hangul input systems were experimented to measure the performance time to evaluate the physical interface of all. The measured performance time was found to be well fitted with the modified Fitts' Law by Hangul input systems on mobile phones. As a result, the physical interfaces for Hangul input systems could be evaluated quantitatively with the prediction of the performance time by Fitts' Law.

  • Owing to the spread of smart devices using touch screen, the Korean language (Hangul) input methods have been varied. In this paper, we have researched and analyzed for finding the best input way of Hangul, which is appropriate to smart devices. By using automata theory, we have suggested easy and efficient automata. The automata, which we suggested, can be used in a Hangul input of gesture type.

  • There are many Hangul input systems to input Korean letter on computer or smart phone. However, the existing systems need to be required more efforts to modify the already inputted letters. This research suggests the Hangul letter modification method which can modify letter effectively based on reusing the alphabets previously inputted. The Hangul modification system using "Jamo Modification Window" follows the composition principle of Hangul, and utilize the already inputted alphabets. It can be applicable to the existing input system without any modification using only "Jamo Modification Window". Especially, this system is very useful on smart phone with small screen.

  • In this paper we discuss optimization of neural network parameters, such as inclination of the sigmoid function, the numbers of the input layer's units and the hidden layer's units, considering application to recognition of hand written Hangul. Hangul characters are composed of vowels and consonants, and basically classified to six patterns by their positions. Using these characteristics of Hangul, the pattern of a given character is determined by its peripheral distribution and the other features. After then, the vowels and the consonants are recognized by the optimized neural network. The constructed recognition system including a neural network is applied to non-learning Hangul written by some Korean people, which are the names randomly taken from Korean spiritual and cultural research institute.

  • This paper describes the development of a window manager based on the real time operating system, Qplus-p, for small internet appliance. Current window managers for small internet appliance are originally developed for desktop environment and then modified for embedded systems. So they have inadequate functions for small internet appliances and do not perfectly support Hangul. The Qplus-P window manager adds the Hangul processing function to Matchbox window manager, a royalty-free window manager for small Internet appliance and provides a new Hangul input method called Amikey. Input mode can be changed automatically from Hangul mode to English mode and vice versa by Amikey. In addition, Qplus-P window manager provides Hangul supported basic applications such as web browser, e-mail client, MP3 player. We developed the window manager by porting open sources to target system after adding Hangul supported functions to them.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient two-step pattern matching method which promises shape distortion-tolerant recognition of handwritten of handwritten Hangul syllables. In the first step, nonlinear shape normalization is carried out to compensate for global shape distortions in handwritten characters, then a preliminary classification based on simple pattern matching is performed. In the next step, nonlinear pattern matching which achieves best matching between input and reference pattern is carried out to compensate for local shape distortions, then detailed classification which determines the final result of classification is performed. As the performance of recognition systems based on pattern matching methods is greatly effected by the quality of reference patterns. we construct reference patterns by combining the proposed nonlinear pattern matching method with a well-known averaging techniques. Experimental results reveal that recognition performance is greatly improved by the proposed two-step pattern matching method and the reference pattern construction scheme.

  • New developments in IT already impact wide segments of a young and mobile population. It is evident that applications of information technology can be of equal benefit to the aged and the disabled. `Eye-Gaze'(EGI) technology was designed for people with paralysis in the upper body. There is a compeling need for a dedicated Korean Language interface for this system. The purpose of this study is to research 'Barrier Free' software using a control group of the mobility impaired to assess the Eye-Gaze Interface in the context of more conventional input methods. TheEGI of this study uses Quick Glance System of Eye Tech Digital Systems. The study will be evaluated on criteria based upon the needs of those with specific disabilities and mobility problems associated with aging. We also intend to explore applications of the Eye-Gaze Interface for English and Japanese devises, based upon our study using the Hangul phonology.

  • Objective : UMLS is 'Ontology' which establishes the database for medical terminology by gathering various medical vocabularies representing same fundamental concepts. Method : Although Chinese character are represented in the Chinese part of Korean Unicode system in a computer, writing of Chinese characters is vary depending on Chinese input systems and Chinese writers' levels of knowledge. As the result of this, representation of Chinese writing in a computer will be considerably different from an old Chinese document. Therefore, a meaningful relationship between digital Chinese terminology and translated Korean is necessary in order to build Ontology for Chinese medical terms from Oriental medical prescription in a computer system. Result : This research will present 1:1 mapping information among the Chinese characters used in the Oriental medical prescription with analysis of 'same character different sound' and 'same meaning different shape' in Chinese part of Unicode systems. Conclusions : Furthermore, the research will provide top-down menu of relationship between Chinese term and Korean term in medical prescription with assumption of that the Oriental medical prescription has its own unique meaning.

  • There are many difficulties to develop a mobile contents due to many constraints on mobile environments. It is difficult to make a good mobile contents with only visual reduction of existing contents on wire Internet. Therefore, it is essential to devise the data representation and to develop the authoring tool to meet the needs of the mobile contents market. We suggest the compact mobile contents to learn Chinese characters and developed its authoring tool. The animation which our system produces is realistic as if someone writes letters with pen or brush. Moreover, our authoring tool makes a user generate a Chinese character animation easily and rapidly although she or he has not many knowledge in computer graphics, mobile programming or Chinese characters. The method to generate the stroke animation is following: We take basic character shape information represented with several contours from TTF(TrueType Font) and get the information for the stroke segmentation and stroke ordering from simple user input. And then, we decompose whole character shape into some strokes by using polygonal approximation technique. Next, the stroke animation for each stroke is automatically generated by the scan line algorithm ordered by the stroke direction. Finally, the ordered scan lines are compressed into some integers by reducing coordinate redundancy As a result, the stroke animation of our system is even smaller than GIF animation. Our method can be extended to rendering and animation of Hangul or general 2D shape based on vector graphics. We have the plan to find the method to automate the stroke segmentation and ordering without user input.
