Study on the Improvement of Stow Net Fishing Technigue and the Enlargement of Fishing Groung to the Distant Waters 2 . Model Experiment on the Newly Designed Gear (안강망어법의 개량과 어장의 원해로의 확대를 위한 연구 - 2 . 새로 설계된 어구의 모형실험 -)

  • Some distinctive defects in the conventional stow net were examined and presented in the previous report of this series. To find out the more effective gear by correcting the defects, the authors carried out another experiment by using a newly designed gear. 1. Special features of the newly designed gear are: (1) stretched width of front end on top, bottom and side panel are decreased 20%, on the other hand, the frank of the panels are increased 10% compared with the conventional gear. Front end of top and bottom panels are bias cutten up to 20% of the length of panels. (2) Length of the head rope and ground rope are shortened 6% by changing of the shape of the top and bottom panels. (3) Lacing lines are attached to four longitudinal seaming lines with suitable hanging ratio. (4) Stretched height of the shearing device were shortened 17%, and the buoyancy on top of the device were increased 20%. (5) Length of the biforked pendants were arranged to be shorter on top-most and bottom-most ones, and loner on middle ones. 2. The observed result can be expressed as (1) Wrinkles in the front end of top panels are removed and fringe line of panels become smooth. (2) Opening height of mouth is observed 3% higher than that of the conventional gear. (3) Opening width is 1.5 to 1.6 times wider than that of the conventional gear. (4) Hydrodynamic resistance is decreased 10%-17%.

The Optomotor Response of Killifish and Yellowtail (송사리와 방어의 시각운동반응)

  • The authors carried out an experiment to find the optomotor response of killifish, Orizias latipes(TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL) and Yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata (TEMMINCK et SCHLEGEL) according to the colors of the netting pattern on the visual screen and the revolving velocities of the visual screen. The experimental water tank was made of 0.5 cm thick transparent acryl in the cylindrical shape (100R$\times$42H cm). The water level in the tank was maintained 30cm high from the bottom. The colors of the netting pattern (mesh size: 19.1cm, width of netting twine: 1.5cm, hanging ratio: 84%) on the three visual screens were black, red and green respectively. The revolving velocities of the visual screen were controlled by pulley, bevel gear and variable speed motor in three steps; slow (15.0cm/sec), middle (37.4cm/sec) and high (62.9cm/sec). The fish was put into the water tank before each experiment and released in it for 30 minutes in order to acclimatize itself to the tank. The visual screen was revolved for 4 minutes per each experiment, at first the fish was released for 1 minute, and then the behavior of the fish was observed for 3 minutes. In the course of clockwise and counter clockwise experiments, 10 minutes-pause was given for the rest. The behavior of the fish was observed by video system, and rounding number and swimming speed of the fish were analysed. The results obtained are as follows: (1) Optomotor response rate of Killifish and yellowtail were 95% and 94% respectively. (2) Response of the fish according to the colors of the netting pattern on the three visual screens was best in black, and second in red and third in green. (3) Response of the fish according to the revolving velocities of the visual screen was best in high speed, and second in middle speed and third in slow speed.

Population Ecological Study of Cultured Sea Squirt (Halocynthia roretzi) and Management Implications (양식 우렁쉥이(Halocynthia roretzi)의 자원 생태학적 분석 및 적정관리 방안)

  • A population ecological study was carried out to estimate survival and growth rates, biomass, biological production and turnover ratio of cultured sea squirt, Halocynthia roretzi, by growth stages, using data from in situ culture experiment off Hansando in the southern part of Korea from February 1985 to July 1986. The squirt population followed an exponential decay function and the instantaneous coefficient of total mortality (Z) was estimated to be 0.0614 $month^{-1}$(Var (Z) = 0.000126). Growths in total weight and meat weight of squirts were expressed as linear functions during the period of culture experiment. The growth of squirts showed a negative correlation with the water temperature. The mean biomass per string ranged from 2.14 kg for March of the first year to 16.26 kg for March of the next year. The biological production per string was estimated to range from 3.28 kg for the first summer (June - July) to 6.46kg for the first late winter (February-March). The peak of turnover ratio occurred in the late winter (February-March) as 3.013 and the ratios sharply declined thereafter. Based on the results of this study, management implications for culturing sea squirts were also suggested. The optimum harvest time ($t_{mb}$) when the peak biomass in terms of total weight occurred was estimated to be late June of the second year, which corresponded to 16.7 months after the main hanging. However, the time when the peak biomass in terms of meat weight was occurred was early July of the second year. The maximum harvest biomass was 17.4 kg per string in terms of total weight and 6.3 kg per string in terms of meat weight. In conclusion, the process of culture should be conducted on the basis of the knowledge of population ecological theories as shown in this study.
