  • The load-insensitivity of the balanced power amplifier(PA) for W-CDMA handset applications is analyzed. The load impedances of the two parallel amplifiers in the balanced PA depending on the output load mismatch are mathematically calculated and with the result, the phase of reflection coefficient at which the linear output power is severely degraded is investigated. From the analysis, we proposed that the linearity of the balanced PA at the phase can be improved by properly increasing the transistor size and thus, multiple balanced PA's with different transistor size are designed and simulated. The simulation result showed that the balanced PA with larger transistor size has improved linear output power under VSWR=4:1.

  • In this paper, an internal integrated microstrop patch for PCS handset is designed. To increase the bandwidth of microstrip patch antenna, a configuration of stacked type using parasitic element is used. Furthermore, to reduce the size of microstirip patch antenna, the main radiator in the substrate is shorted to the ground plane using five shorting-posts while three parasitic elements on the superstrate are also shorted to the ground plane using two shorting-posts respectively. The antenna bandwidth and radiation characteristics are calculated by HFSS 7.0 software, and compared with the experimental results. Experimental results show that the return loss is less than -10dB over the band of 1766MHz to 1900 MHz(134MHz) and the size of the fabricated microstrip patch antenna are $23\times20\times6.35mm$.

  • Login process uses both ID and password information to authenticate someone and to permit its access privilege on system. However, an attacker can get those ID and password information by using existing packet sniffing or key logger programs. It cause privacy problem as those information can be used as a hacking and network attack on web server and web e-mail system. Therefore, a more secure and advanced authentication mechanism should be required to enhance the authentication process on existing system. In this paper, we propose a multi-factor authentication process by using software form of secure card system combined with existing ID/Password based login system. Proposed mechanism uses a random number generated from the his/her own handset with biometric information. Therefore, we can provide a one-time password function on web login system to authenticate the user using multi-factor form. Proposed scheme provide enhanced authentication function and security because it is a 'multi-factor authentication mechanism' combined with handset and biometric information on web login system.

  • In this papre, the design and the fabrication of the surface mountable voltage controlled oscillator is described for local oscillator in PCS(WACS/TDMA) handset. The VCO employs two silicon bipolar transistors of $f_{gamma}$ of 4 GHz as active devices. These are asembled to form the VCO on the 4 layer PCB of the size $12{\times}10mm$which provides the strip line resonator at the third layer. The fabricated VCO shows tuning rage over 50 MHz, phase noise -100 dBc/Hz at the 100 kHz frequency offset, and 0 dBm output power with the consumption of 22 mA at 3V. It is belived that the size will be more reduced by employing 1005 chip components and that the current consumption will be improved by employing transistors of higher $f_{gamma}$.

  • In this paper, a planar antenna that is small and light, is designed and analyzed aiming handset antenna of IMT-2000. Employing the Ensemble simulator based on a MoM, design-parameters are found to determine a resonant frequency. Therefore, it is analyzed with the Ensemble simulation and FDTD numerical for resonating at the allocated frequency for IMT-2000 in the fixed antenna dimension of 21$^{\circ}$wing angle that is a design parameter. Analyzing with FDTD method, Though the results of FDTD are very exact, this analysis introduces errors due to the staircasing approximation in the slope of bowtie. To reduce this error, it is divided to 4-ranges where the cell contains the boundary of perfect conductor/free space. Then, each range is calculated by different by different equation, which modify the H-field to add the component of the area and length of the cell filled with free space. Therefore, the modified FDTD algorithm provided with a narrow bandwidth of return loss calculated with a standard FDTD algorithm that can be extended to the desired ranges.

  • Location-based services (LBS) are used in various applications such as emergency support, navigation, location, traffic routes, information gathering, and entertainment due to the rapid growth of information communication technologies and mobile phones. In general, locations are represented by coordinates and are related to terrain. These are of great interest in mobile-based data transmission. This paper proposes a method to exchange the contact of the other party by detecting the movement of the mobile phone of the individual user based on the location-based service. The proposed method extracts motion using the acceleration sensor of the mobile phone and transmits the location and time information to the server when the motion continues for a predetermined time. Attempts to establish a connection between users who are experiencing motion in mobile phones in the short distance have been made from the server. Once the connection between the users is made, the encrypted contact is received from the server. Experimental results show that the proposed method can exchange data by minimizing the processing in the handset compared with the existing method.

  • In the communication, a reconfigurable antenna using two PIN diodes is presented for quad-band(GSM900/GSM1800/GSM1900/UMTS) mobile handset applications. The proposed antenna has a size $45{\times}11{\times}6mm^3$. By independently adjusting the on/off states of two PIN diodes located on the radiating element, the proposed structure can be operated in the PIFA and loop mode, respectively. The PIN diodes are replaced by conducting tape in order to verify the concept. In regards to the fabricated reconfigurable antenna, when operating in the PIFA mode, the measured results show that the 7 dB bandwidth is 8.62 %. which covers the GSM900(880~960 MHz) band. When operating in the loop mode, the measured results show that the 7 dB bandwidth is 26.36 %, which covers the GSM1800(1,710~1,880 MHz), GSM1900(1,850~1,990 MHz), and UMTS(1,920~2,170 MHz) bands, respectively.

  • Our research brings managerial insights for developing new digital convergence of devices and services. To explain the phenomenon of device and service convergence, we combine two different approaches from separate research fields: a perceptual mapping technique generally used for segmentation in marketing and associative network analysis mobilized to understanding network structure of core and peripheral as well as the information mediating role of nodes in network science. By combining these two approaches, we provide an in-depth analysis of the associations among devices and services by assessing the centrality of device and service nodes in an associative network. This is done by examining the connections between these services and devices as well as investigating the role of mediation in the combined device-service associative network. Our results based on bi-partite network analysis of survey responses from 250 Internet Protocol (IP) television viewers show which device and which service will play the major role in future device and service convergence as well as which characteristics and functionalities have to be incorporated into future convergence. Among the devices, the mobile handset with the betweenness centrality of 0.26 appears to be the device that would lead future device convergence. Among the services, wireless broadband with the betweenness centrality of 0.276 appears to be the service on which future service convergence needs to be developed. This result is quite unexpected, since wireless broadband has a lower penetration rate than other services, such as fixed broadband and cable TV. In addition, we indicate the possibility of converging devices, such as personal digital assistant (PDA) and mobile handset, and services, such as IPTV and mobile Internet, into wireless broadband services in the future.

  • Wireless bio-signal sensing system, which is based on the principle of Doppler radar, can measure a respiration and heart rates with a periodic movement of skin and muscle near the heart. Though the sensing monostatic system using a circulator has been studied, this bistatic system can be improved by using a circular polarized antenna which has a high isolation between transmitter and receiver. In this paper, we measured the bio-signal without the direct contact with the person. The design of each system and experimental results are discussed.
