  • Methods for measuring the physical workload of construction workers are classified into posture assessment techniques (i.e., OWAS, RULA, etc.) and physiological measurement techniques (i.e., EMG, heart rate, etc.). The one does not quantify the workload on a specific body part of a worker by considering the weight of the hand tools or materials on hand and time for holding a particular posture. This paper presents a procedure for evaluating a physical demand using the electromyography (EMG) sensor. This study compares the EMG measurement and the posture assessment. The case study is carried out on a masonry operation.

  • Patients with pain, numbness, and weakness in their elbows, wrists, and hands often need proper rehabilitation treatments. Among them, musculoskeletal injection therapy should be performed after a full evaluation of the patient, taking into account history and physical examination leading to clinical diagnosis. General rules such as accurate diagnosis and injection materials selection are used to achieve maximum benefit with minimal side effects. During injection, patient location, aseptic care, penetration techniques, follow-up and follow-up care must be maintained. Specific techniques may vary depending on the type, lesion, and location of the injection therapy. For optimal effectiveness, physician should inject directly into the lesion and avoid the injection of surroundings as much as possible. Therefore, ultrasound-guided injections are needed to accurately inject. These conditions and other conditions of the hands, wrists, and elbows can be effectively diagnosed and treated with diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections.

  • Recently, vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques have been developed for assisting elderly and disabled people to control home appliances. Frequently occurred problems which lower the hand gesture recognition rate are due to the inter-person variation and intra-person variation. The recognition difficulty caused by inter-person variation can be handled by using user dependent model and model selection technique. And the recognition difficulty caused by intra-person variation can be handled by using fuzzy logic. In this paper, we propose multivariate fuzzy decision tree learning and classification method for a hand motion recognition system for multiple users. When a user starts to use the system, the most appropriate recognition model is selected and used for the user.

  • Background: Preoperative traditional software planning (TSP) is a method used to assist surgeons with implant selection and glenoid guide-pin insertion in shoulder arthroplasty. Mixed reality (MR) is a new technology that uses digital holograms of the preoperative plan and guide-pin trajectory projected into the operative field. The purpose of this study was to compare TSP to MR in a simulated surgical environment involving insertion of guide-pins into models of severely deformed glenoids. Methods: Eight surgeons inserted guide-pins into eight randomized three-dimensional-printed severely eroded glenoid models in a simulated surgical environment using either TSP or MR. In total, 128 glenoid models were used and statistically compared. The outcomes compared between techniques included procedural time, difference in guide-pin start point, difference in version and inclination, and surgeon confidence via a confidence rating scale. Results: When comparing traditional preoperative software planning to MR visualization as techniques to assist surgeons in glenoid guide pin insertion, there were no statistically significant differences in terms of mean procedure time (P=0.634), glenoid start-point (TSP=2.2±0.2 mm, MR=2.1±0.1 mm; P=0.760), guide-pin orientation (P=0.586), or confidence rating score (P=0.850). Conclusions: The results demonstrate that there were no significant differences between traditional preoperative software planning and MR visualization for guide-pin placement into models of eroded glenoids. A perceived benefit of MR is the real-time intraoperative visibility of the surgical plan and the patient's anatomy; however, this did not translate into decreased procedural time or improved guide-pin position.

  • In this paper, we evaluated prediction accuracy of Euler angle spectrograph classification method using a convolutional neural networks (CNN) for hand gesture recognition in augmented reality (AR) cognitive rehabilitation system based on Leap Motion Controller (LMC). Hand gesture recognition methods using a conventional support vector machine (SVM) show 91.3% accuracy in multiple motions. In this paper, five hand gestures ("Promise", "Bunny", "Close", "Victory", and "Thumb") are selected and measured 100 times for testing the utility of spectral classification techniques. Validation results for the five hand gestures were able to be correctly predicted 100% of the time, indicating superior recognition accuracy than those of conventional SVM methods. The hand motion recognition using CNN meant to be applied more useful to AR cognitive rehabilitation training systems based on LMC than sign language recognition using SVM.

  • Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) is a nonenveloped, single stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Picornavirudae. Transmission by direct contact such as hand-to-hand, hand-to-nose, and hand-to-eye has been readily demonstrated in experimental settings. HRV are the most frequent causes of common cold infection, however, they are also known to replicate in the lower respiratory tract and associated with more severe respiratory illnesses such as asthma. New technique such as reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and molecular typing in HRV has been developed and our understanding of the importance of these respiratory viruses. HRVs consisted of 101 serotypes that are classified into groups A and B according to sequence variations. And there is a newly identified set of HRVs, called Group C, and it is currently under investigation. In recent study using PCR techniques, HRVs accounted for approximate 50-80% of common colds and 85 % of childhood asthma exacerbations and in more than half of adult exacerbations. However, the mechanisms of HRV- induced asthma exacerbations are poorly understood. This review discusses the association between HRVs and childhood asthma.

  • Normality is one of the most common assumptions made in sampling and statistical inference procedures without suffering from lack of attention. Its results may lead to an invalid conclusion. We present several testing procedures that can be used to evaluate the effects of departure from normality using concrete examples by hand or with the aid of Minitab. The goal is to influence prospective teachers in order to learn statistical concepts and techniques for testing normality on the basis of the didactical theory.
