The hand coordinate systems for measuring vibration exposures and biodynamic responses have been standardized, but they are not actually used in many studies. This contradicts the purpose of the standardization. The objectives of this study were to identify the major sources of this problem, and to help define or identify better coordinate systems for the standardization. This study systematically reviewed the principles and definition methods, and evaluated typical hand coordinate systems. This study confirms that, as accelerometers remain the major technology for vibration measurement, it is reasonable to standardize two types of coordinate systems: a tool-based basicentric (BC) system and an anatomically based biodynamic (BD) system. However, these coordinate systems are not well defined in the current standard. Definition of the standard BC system is confusing, and it can be interpreted differently; as a result, it has been inconsistently applied in various standards and studies. The standard hand BD system is defined using the orientation of the third metacarpal bone. It is neither convenient nor defined based on important biological or biodynamic features. This explains why it is rarely used in practice. To resolve these inconsistencies and deficiencies, we proposed a revised method for defining the realistic handle BC system and an alternative method for defining the hand BD system. A fingertip-based BD system for measuring the principal grip force is also proposed based on an important feature of the grip force confirmed in this study.

The use of hand gesture provides an attractive alternative to cumbersome interface devices for human-computer interaction(HCI). Many methods hand gesture recognition using visual analysis have been proposed such as syntactical analysis, neural network(NN), Hidden Markov Model(HMM) and so on. In our research, a HMMs is proposed for alphabetical hand gesture recognition. In the preprocessing stage, the proposed approach consists of three different procedures for hand localization, hand tracking and gesture spotting. The hand location procedure detects the candidated regions on the basis of skin-color and motion in an image by using a color histogram matching and time-varying edge difference techniques. The hand tracking algorithm finds the centroid of a moving hand region, connect those centroids, and thus, produces a trajectory. The spotting a feature database, the proposed approach use the mesh feature code for codebook of HMM. In our experiments, 1300 alphabetical and 1300 untrained gestures are used for training and testing, respectively. Those experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields a higher and satisfying recognition rate for the images with different sizes, shapes and skew angles.

Biometrics are getting more and more attention in recent years for security and other concerns. So far, only fingerprint recognition has seen limited success for on-line security check, since other biometrics verification and identification systems require more complicated and expensive acquisition interfaces and recognition processes. Hand-Geometry can be used for biometric verification and identification because of its acquisition convenience and good performance for verification and identification performance. It could also be a good candidate for online checks. Therefore, this paper proposes a Hand-Geometry recognition system based on geometrical features of hand. From anatomical point of view, human hand can be characterized by its length, width, thickness, geometrical composition, shapes of the palm, and shape and geometry of the fingers. This paper proposes thirty relevant features for a Hand-Geometry recognition system. This system presents verification results based on hand measurements of 20 individuals. The verification process has been tested on a size of $320{\times}240$ image, and result of the verification process have hit rate of 95% and FAR of 0.020.
In this study, we investigated spatio-temporal eye-hand coordination by the "Global effect paradigm", a target-distracter configuration Global effect is observed a variety of visual tasks, for example, during rapid automatic tracking, scanning for target detail, and the comparison of target configurations. Global effect used to investigate eye-hand coordination with a task that presents a target close to a distracter. Eight young subjects participated in the experiments. The experiments consist of using a distracter less eccentric than the targe1 and using a distracter more eccentric than target. Each experiment consist of tasks which are making reference, pointing the target with watching visual stimulation(saccade) and pointing the target. The subject's task was to move towards the target as quickly as possible. We measured the eye movement by using EOG and the hand movement by using NDI Optotrak system. This study shows that eye and hand movement exists for global effect paradigm in spatio-temporal coordination.

In this paper, we propose a method dividing effectively the hand and fingers using general webcam. The method executes 4 times empirically preprocessing one to erase noise. First, it erases the overall noise of the image using Gaussian smoothing. Second, it changes from RGB image to HSV color model and YCbCr color model, executes a global static binarization based on the statistical value for each color model, and erase the noise through bitwise-OR operation. Third, it executes outline approximation and inner region filling algorithm using RDP algorithm and Flood fill algorithm and erase noise. Lastly, it erases noise through morphological operation and determines the threshold propositional to the image size and selects the hand and fingers area. This paper compares to existing one color based hand area division method and focuses the noise deduction and can be used to a gesture recognition application.
Measurement protocols for hand anthropometry have been studied for ergonomic product design. The present study developed a 3D semi-automatic measurement protocol (3D-SAMP) which semi-automatically measures various hand dimensions using a 3D scanner. The 3D-SAMP was compared with the conventional direct measurement method (DMM) to examine its effectiveness. The 3D-SAMP consists of (1) fabricating a plaster cast of the hand, (2) placing landmarks on the plaster hand, (3) scanning the plaster hand with a 3D scanner, (4) identifying automatically the positions of the landmarks on the digital hand, and (5) extracting automatically hand anthropometric measurements (lengths, widths, thicknesses, and circumferences). An evaluation experiment conducted in the study found the 3D-SAMP preferred to the DMM in terms of reliability (the number of dimensions exceeding the variability criteria SD=2 mm and CV=5% : 3D-SAMP =2 and DMM=24) and ease of measurement (3D-SAMP=5.2 and DMM=4.3 out of 7). The 3D-SAMP can be applied to ergonomic design of a hand-held product.

Background Professional affiliation between medical centers and professional sports teams can be mutually beneficial in the provision of healthcare and marketing strategy. Anecdotal evidence suggests a link between trauma volume and sporting events; however, there is limited data. This study aims to characterize the incidence of operative hand and facial trauma during professional baseball home games. Methods A retrospective review of surgical cases for traumatic hand or facial injuries at a level 1 center between 1999 and 2012 was performed. Demographic information including date of injury, admission status, and operative repair were collected. Patients were grouped based on whether their trauma occurred on the date of a home game. Results Operative hand and facial trauma occurred at a rate of 33.4 injuries per 100 days with home games, compared to 22.2 injuries per 100 days (incidence rate ratios, 1.50; 95% confidence interval, 1.34-1.69). When home games were played, patients were more likely to present as a result of motorcycle accidents (3.1% vs. 1.5%; P=0.04) or bicycle accidents (5.0% vs. 2.6%; P=0.01). Other mechanisms of trauma were not statistically different. There was an increase incidence of injuries during home games in August; weekly variability showed an increased incidence during the weekends. Conclusions There was an increased rate of operative hand and facial injuries on dates with professional home games. The incidence of injuries during home games was higher in the late summer and on the weekends. Further analysis may allow improved resource allocation and strategies for injury prevention and treatment.

Hand shape recognition is a fundamental technique for implementing natural human-computer interaction. In this paper, we discuss a method for effectively detecting a hand region in Kinect-based hand shape recognition. Since Kinect is a camera that can capture color images and infrared images (or depth images) together, both images can be exploited for the process of detecting a hand region. That is, a hand region can be detected by finding pixels having skin colors or by finding pixels having a specific depth. Therefore, after analyzing the performance of each, we need a method of properly combining both to clearly extract the silhouette of hand region. This is because the hand shape recognition rate depends on the fineness of detected silhouette. Finally, through comparison of hand shape recognition rates resulted from different hand region detection methods in general environments, we propose a high-performance hand region detection method.
