Examining the microbial populations in the Han River estuary, we conducted this experiment at six sites of the estuarine area, Chollyu-ri, Cholsan-ri, Wolgon-ri, Chogi-ri, Inhwa-ri, and Oepo-ri for 5 months since May 1967. From the results obtained it could be summarized as follows. 1) The salinity of the estuarine water increased in order of the distances from the base point of the Old Han River Bridge to every site of the estuary, and pH of the water, which were between 7. 3 and 8. 1, showing little difference each other in both the sites and dates of experiment. 2) The populations of the general bacteria and coliform group bacteria were highest at the site of Chollyu-ri, and it decreased with the downstreaming of the river water toward Oepo-ri site. As for fungi which have comparatively high tolerance to the salinity, its population was shown hi hest at Chogi-ri. 3) The relationship between the salinity and the number of the general bacteria have indicated that the incresed salinity reduced the growth rates of the bacteria. By this it can be assumed that the fresh-water bacteria decreased due to the sea water as well as its dilution effects. 4) The high pollution of the esturarine water was caused by the increases of inhabitants and water thrown by industries in Seoul and Kyung-In Industrial District as well as the excrements fertilized to the farms.

To investigate geochemical characteristics and the sources of the dissolved ion species in the river water in the Han river drainage basin, samples were collected at 60 sites from the Han river drainage basin. The data for. pH, conductivity, TDS (total dissolved solid), temperature, and concentrations of dissloved ions were obtained as follows : (1) The geochemical characteristics of the surface water in the South and North Han river drainage basins are mainly controlled by bed rock geology in the drainage basin and in the main stream of the Han river considerably affected by anthropogenic pollution. The South Han river water samples have high concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ (ave. 15.42 ppm), $Mg^{2+}$ (ave. 2.74 ppm), HC $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ (ave. 51.9 ppm), which evidently indicates that the bed rock geology in a limestone area mainly controls the surface water chemistry. The concentration of S $O_4$$^{2-}$ is remarkably high (SHR10-2 : 129.9 ppm) because of acid mine drainage from the metal and coal mines in the upper reaches of the South Han river. (2) The South Han river and the North Han river join the Han river. in the Yangsuri, Kyounggido and flow through Seoul metropolitan city. The mixing ratio is about 60:40 at the meeting point (sample number HRl0). (3) The result of factor analysis suggests that the pollution factor accounts for about 79% and the bed rock type factor accounts for about 7% of the data variation. This means that the geochemical characteristics of the Han river water mainly controlled by anthropogenic pollution in the South Han river and main stream of the Han river drainage basin. (4) The chemical data for four tributaries such as the Wangsukcheon, the Tancheon, the Zunuangcheon, and the Anyangcheon show that the concentration of pollution elements such as N $O_2$, C $l^{-}$, P $O_4$$^{3-}$, S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and Mn are high due to municipal waste disposal.
Studies on the molluscan fauna in Han River were chronologically summarized in this review. In summarizing the related reports, the fauna in the middle- and down-streams of Han River consisted of 2 classes, 5 subclasses, 5 orders, 10 families and 21 species with 3 variations. In addition to the chronological review on molluscan fauna, water pollution problems of Han River according to the urbanization and industrialization around the Seoul areas were ecologically discussed.
This study has performed flood routing computations considering the upstream and intermediate dams in Han River using DAMBRK. Hypothetical reservoirs with variable dimensions are used to compare the validity of the reservoir routing methods, that are storage routing and dynamic routing. The flood events in September, 1990 and August, 1995 are used to verify the applicability of the model. The model performs the flood analysis more accurately considering multiple dam effects in Han River. The methodologies presented in this study will give a good contribution for basin-wide flood forecasting in Han River basin.
Variations of water quality parameters were investigated for last 13 years in Han river. Deviation from 3 month moving average was suggested for the variation analysis. Many parameters of mainstream and tributaries showed similar monthly fluctuations. Suspended solid of mainstream showed higher fluctuation than that of tributaries due to summer flood. Contrarily, the organic parameters such as BOD, COD, and TN showed lower fluctuations in the mainstreams. The magnitude of deviation was in the order of pH < DO, COD, temp. < BOD, TN < TP, SS. Strong correlation was found in BOD data of adjacent sites. Main sites showed low deviation in comparison to adjacent common sites of mainstream (1:2.4). Mainstream showed low deviation in comparison to tributaries (1:1.7). Seasonal tendency of monthly BOD was confirmed using autocorrelation function. The deviation was in inverse proportion to the magnitude of BOD.

The purpose of this study was assessment the quality of water by using the statistical analysis technique of the Water flow and water quality from January 2012 to December 2016 at the unit basin for total pollutant load management system (TPLMS) in the Imjin River. Water flow and water quality were monitored at an average of 8 day intervals, 11 parameters were used for correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), and cluster analysis (CA). The Hierarchical CA was classified into three according to the change of space, such as natural rivers, urban rivers, point with large influence of point pollution source, it was found that the type of contamination source the similarity of water quality affected the classification of cluster. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Analysis, there were statistically significant differences between mean values among the clusters. Correlation analysis showed the correlation coefficient between $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC was 0.951 (p<0.01) and the correlation was statistically significantly higher. According to the result PCA and FA, 3 principal components can explaining 72% of the total variations in water quality characteristics and main factor was EC, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, TN, TP and TOC indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients were influenced. This study presented the regression equation obtained by applying the factor scores to the multiple linear regression analysis and concluded that the management Indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients is important for water quality management in the Imjin River basin.

Water quality in four major river basin in Korea was managed with Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) System. The unit watershed in TMDL system has been evaluated with Target Water Quality (TWQ) assessment using average water quality, without considering its volume of water quantity. As results, although unit watershed are obtained its TWQ, its allocated loads were not satisfied and vice versa. To solve these problems, a number of TWQ assessments with using Load Duration Curve (LDC) have been studied at other watersheds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate achievement of TWQ with Flow Duration Curve (FDC) and Load Duration Curve(LDC) at 26 unit watersheds in Han river basin. The results showed that achievement rates in TWQ assessment with current method and with LDC were 50~56 % and 69~73%, respectively. Because of increasing about 20% of achievement rates with using LDC, the number of exceeded unit watershed at Han river Basin was decreased about 4~6 unit watersheds.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the instream flow in the North Han River basin according to the operation of Imnam Dam in North Korea. The water budget and instream flow satisfaction were analyzed using hourly, daily and monthly data of Water Management Information System (WAMIS) from Jan. 1991 to Dec. 2018. As a analysis result of water budget using hourly data in the North Han River basin, although inflows compared with dam release in the upstream basin of Peace Dam-Hwacheon Dam and Chuncheon Dam-Soyanggang Dam-Uiam Dam were calculated as negative values, the reasonable results using daily and monthly average data were estimated. It showed that the results of water budget analysis of dam inflow and total release may be different by time units of data. The monthly average inflow of Hwacheon Dam decreased significantly after the construction in 2003 of Imnam Dam, which confirmed that the operation of Imnam Dam had a significant effect on the dams in the North Han River basin. The operation of Imnam Dam is one of the main reasons for the lack of instream flow and total shortage amounts and shortage period increased up to +330% due to the decrease in inflow and total release of dams in the North Han River water after the operation of Imnam Dam. It is necessary to study various plans to secure instream flow including transboundary river management

In the study, the water quality of the Imjin River basin with pollutants of changing characteristics it was determined through statistical analysis, correlation analysis, principle component and factor analysis, and cluster analysis. Among all analyzed data points, the average water quality concentration at the Sincheon 3 site shows high levels of BOD 13.4 mg/L, COD 19.9 mg/L, T-N 11.145 mg/L, T-P 0.336 mg/L, TOC 14.2 mg/L, indicating that Sincheon basin requires intersive water quality management out of the entire drainage basin. The correlational analysis of comprehensive water quality data shows statistically significant correlation between COD, TOC, BOD, T-N water quality factors, as well as finding of high correlation between organic and nutrients. The principal component analysis show that 2 main components being extracted at 81.221% from the measuring station's entire data, while seasonal data show 3 main components being extracted at 96.241%. Factor analysis of the entire data set and the seasonal data identify BOD, COD, T-N, T-P, TOC as the common factors influencing water quality. The spatial and temporal cluster analysis showed 4 groups and 3 groups, respectively, according to seasonal characteristics and land use. By analysing the water quality factors for the Imjin River basins over an 8 year period, with consideration to the spatial and temporal characteristics, this study will become the fundamental analytic data that will help understand the future changes of water quality in the Imjin River basin.
Areal Reduction Factor(ARF) has been developed and used to convert point Rainfall intensity-Duration-Frequency(I-D-F) to areal I-D-F in many countries. In Korea, though ARF was estimated in Han river basin by several researchers, it has some limitations to apply to other regions due to low denisity of rainfall gauging station and shortage of data. In this study ARF has been developed in area of relatively high density of rainfall gauging station, i.e., Pyungchang river(Han river), Wi stream(Nakdong river), and Bochung stream(Guem river) basin by geographically fixed-area method. And coefficient of variation of mean annual precipitation was presented to use ARE in other areas and its applicability was analyzed.
