  • The purpose of this study was assessment the quality of water by using the statistical analysis technique of the Water flow and water quality from January 2012 to December 2016 at the unit basin for total pollutant load management system (TPLMS) in the Imjin River. Water flow and water quality were monitored at an average of 8 day intervals, 11 parameters were used for correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA), and cluster analysis (CA). The Hierarchical CA was classified into three according to the change of space, such as natural rivers, urban rivers, point with large influence of point pollution source, it was found that the type of contamination source the similarity of water quality affected the classification of cluster. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Analysis, there were statistically significant differences between mean values among the clusters. Correlation analysis showed the correlation coefficient between $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC was 0.951 (p<0.01) and the correlation was statistically significantly higher. According to the result PCA and FA, 3 principal components can explaining 72% of the total variations in water quality characteristics and main factor was EC, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$, TN, TP and TOC indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients were influenced. This study presented the regression equation obtained by applying the factor scores to the multiple linear regression analysis and concluded that the management Indirect indicators of organic matter and nutrients is important for water quality management in the Imjin River basin.

  • To determine the content of hazard microcystin (MC) in Han River system and Ecological Ponds in Seoul City and Kyunggi district, a most toxic derivative, microcystin-LR (MCLR) of 15 samples of 7 ponds, 4 rivers and 4 reservoirs during low precipitation and cold season in 2003 were analyzed by ELISA method. With the change of water temperature ($0.4\;{\sim}\;21.9^{\circ}C$), cyanobacteria including Microcystis aeruginosa dominated the cold phytoplankton community in small ecological ponds such as Kyungbokgung Kyunghyaeru (KBP), Seokchon reservoir (SCR), Yangsoori Ryukgakji (YSS), having the long residence time. Contents of MCLR (the detection limit; $0.05\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) were high in cyanobacteria-rich sites, especially, Microcystis aeruginosa. Total MCLR, cell extracted type plus dissolved type, were $1.39\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ in KBP, $0.55\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ in SCR and $0.59\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ in YSS, in the first sampling having a high temperature (>$20^{\circ}C$), while some detected only in YSS during the cold season. As expected, the MCLR content was correlated with Microcystis aeruginosa (r = 0.526 for cell extracted type, r = 0.433 for dissolved type). Therefore, low concentration of MCLR detected in small ponds and Han river system in Seoul metropolitan city and Kyunggi district, maybe hardly affect human recreation activity, especially the drinking water supply.

  • In this study three log-transformed linear regression models are compared with the focus of bias correction problem. The models are the traditional simple linear regression estimator (SL), the quasi maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) and the minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE). Using such models, suspended solid loads can be estimated using the discharge - suspended solid data set that has been measured by NIER Nakdong River Water Environment Laboratory. As a result, SL shows negative bias for most values of the measured discharge range. QMLE is nearly unbiased for moderate values of the measured discharge range, but shows increasingly positive bias for either large or small value of the measured discharge range. MVUE is unbiased. It is also analyzed how the estimated regression coefficient and exponent are distributed along Nakdong river main stream.

  • The purpose of this study consists in introducing and examining the previous river classification systems applicable to the river improvement technique including geomorphological considerations, and developing a new system using the geomorphological criteria which represent the morphology of rivers. A newly developed system uses the channel reach as a classifying unit which is delineated by upstream and downstream tributaries. It adopts three basic geomorphological criteria for classification: 1) valley-floor width index(VI) reflecting the confinement of the channel in the valley, 2) sinuosity(P) which expresses the channel planform, and 3) bed material($d_{50}$). The system is composed of 24 stream types. Concerning every stream type, valley forms, principal bed forms and fluvial processes with disturbance elements are briefly presented. Finally, the applicability of this system to the Chungmi Stream and the Imjin River data in comparison with that of Rosgen system is examined.

  • The amount of the heating and cooling energy of water source heat pump using the raw water from the Paldang water intake station is investigated in the study. The Han river water is conveyed in the large-size shallowly buried pipe. Averaged water temperature at the position, 27 km from the Paldang water intake station, is increased by $1.11^{\circ}C$ due to the geothermal energy transfer under the ground, therefore the raw water has more thermal energy than the river water. To estimate of the thermal energy for the raw water, it is assumed that the water source heat pump is used for the heating and cooling ventilation. When $5.0^{\circ}C$ temperature difference energy of the raw water is used in the heat pump system all the year except for the January and February in which $3.0^{\circ}C$ temperature difference energy is used. It is predicted that total 5,766.3 Tcal could be used in the metropolitan area a year, which is about 3.0% of the river water unutilized energy resources.

  • Up to now, a lot of houses, roads and other urban facilities have been damaged by natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. It is reported that the size and frequency of disasters are growing greatly due to global warming. In order to mitigate such disaster, flood forecasting and alerting systems have been developed for the Han river, Geum river, Nak-dong river and Young-san river. These systems, however, do not help small municipal departments cope with the threat of flood. In this study, a real-time urban flood forecasting service (U-FFS) is developed for ubiquitous computing city which includes small river basins. A test bed is deployed at Tan-cheon in Gyeonggido to verify U-FFS. Wireless sensors such as rainfall gauge and water lever gauge are installed to develop hydrologic forecasting model and CCTV camera systems are also incorporated to capture high definition images of river basins. U-FFS is based on the ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) that is data-driven model and is characterized by its accuracy and adaptability. It is found that U-FFS can forecast the water level of outlet of river basin and provide real-time data through internet during heavy rain. It is revealed that U-FFS can predict the water level of 30 minutes and 1 hour later very accurately. Unlike other hydrologic forecasting model, this newly developed U-FFS has advantages such as its applicability and feasibility. Furthermore, it is expected that U-FFS presented in this study can be applied to ubiquitous computing city (U-City) and/or other cities which have suffered from flood damage for a long time.

  • In order to investigate the temporal variability of dissolved and particulate trace metals in the Han River, water samples were collected intermittently at two sites for 3 years (August 91 to December 94). Surface seawaters covering the range of salinity were also collected at the estuarine region to evaluate the role of estuary for the riverine fluxes of trace metals within the estuary during October 95 and 96. During the study period, dissolved metal concentrations in riverwaters varied by a factor of 5-10 for Fe, Ni, Co and Cu and 50-100 for Mn, Cd and Pb depending upon the water level; high concentration during the low water and low concentration in high water period except for Fe. The concentration of dissolved Fe increased with increasing water discharge. These concentration-discharge relationships of the studied trace metals are explained by the successive dilution of waters from two different origins, which can be presumably identified as anthropogenic discharges and watershed flushing. Although estuarine waters at early mixing region were not collected due to the difficulty of sampling, mixing behaviors of metals were inferred from the concentration-salinity relationships through the laboratory mixing experiment and field sampling, and distribution coefficients between dissolved and labile particulate phases. It is suggested that the Han River estuary plays a role of accumulating Fe, Mn, Co and Pb from riverine sources due to high turbidity caused by strong tidal current, whereas this system serves as a source of dissolved Cd due to release caused by extended residence time of riverine particles.

  • The habitat composition in the Han-river estuary, where white-naped crane(Grus vipio; endangered migrating bird) spend winter, was analysed by the geographic information system(GIS). And the habitat use pattern of white-naped crane collected by satellite tracking method was analysed. The % composition of seven habitat categories of land cover classification was compared for the buffers of radii 100 m, 200 m, 500 m, and 1 km, respectively, around the white-naped crane position point(n=228), and the statistical analysis was done using chi-square test. The results showed no selective use of habitat area by white-naped crane in the buffers of 100 m, 200 m and 500 m, but showed clear selection of habitat use (p < 0.05) in the case of 1 km buffer.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop two dimensional contaminant transport numerical model by finite element method. The developed model system was tested for water quality analysis when contaminants from tributaries and sewage treatment Plants flow into the main river. In this study, the model was to perform calibration for reasonable parameter production and verification for reliability and accuracy. And, the proposed model was applied on the downstream of Han river using calibrated parameters. These results represented real con taminant distribution profile along the channel, and produced the good agreement in comparing calculated vague with measured value.
