  • The HTTP does not support continuity for browser-server interaction between successive visits or a user due to a stateless feature. Cookies were invented to maintain continuity and state on the Web. Because cookies are transmitted in plain and contain text-character strings encoding relevant information about the user, the attacker can easily copy and modify them for his undue profit. In this paper, we design a secure cookies scheme based on X.509 public key certificate for solving these security weakness of typical web cookies. Our secure cookies scheme provides not only mutual authentication between client and server but also confidentiality and integrity of user information. Additionally, we implement our secure cookies scheme and compare it to the performance with SSL(Secure Socket Layer) protocol that is widely used for security of HTTP environment.

  • The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is being deployed by GSM network operators world-wide, and promises to provide users with “always-on” data access at bandwidths comparable to that of conventional fixed-wire telephone modems. However, many users have found the reality to be rather different, experiencing very disappointing performance when, for example, browsing the web over GPRS. In this paper, we examine the causes, and show how unfortunate interactions between the GPRS link characteristics and TCP/IP protocols lead to poor performance. A performance characterization of the GPRS link-layer is presented, determined through extensive measurements taken over production networks. We present measurements of packet loss rates, bandwidth availability, link stability, and round-trip time. The effect these characteristics have on TCP behavior are examined, demonstrating how they can result in poor link utilization, excessive packet queueing, and slow recovery from packet losses. Further, we show that the HTTP protocol can compound these issues, leading to dire WWW performance. We go on to show how the use of a transparent proxy interposed near the wired-wireless border can be used to alleviate many of these performance issues without requiring changes to either client or server end systems.

  • Wireless Session Protocol(WSP) which was updated and supplemented based on HyperText Transfer Protocol(HTTP) was designed by Wireless Application Protocol(WAP) forum regarding the characteristics of wireless environment. WSP improved the performance in wireless network, and introduced various facilities considering wireless environment. In this paper, we more improve the performance of WSP adding protocol message compression capability; we cail improved WSP protocol as WSP+. And, we analysis the performance of each protocol with WSP and WSP+ implementation. As a result of experiment, the capability which proposed in this paper reduced a response traffic about 45%. In $10^{-4}$ bit error rate, we also found the packet loss rate and time delay per transaction of WSP+ was improved over 40%. Finally, we found that the protocol message compression capability reduces message retransmission count in transaction layer and shorten the delay time per transaction by reducing a message size.

  • The client request scheduling techniques for web server can classified into the scheduling techniques considering a document size to be requested and not. The scheduling techniques considering a document site to be requested provides a better average response time than another As the size-based SRPT(Shortest Remaining Processing Time first) is typical, and the most of scheduling techniques considering a web document size are based on SRPT. Most of existing researches, however, have not considered the feature of HTTP/1.1 which enable the clients to request concurrent multiple inlined-contents in a HTML document via each connection. In this paper we propose a connection scheduling technique with the scheduling window which provides a better response time in HTTP/1.1. The experimental results show that the performance with the proposed approach is improved about $10\%$ more than the connection scheduling with SRPT.

  • HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) is a promising technology for delivering video content over the Internet. HAS-based video streaming solutions rely on bandwidth estimation to select the appropriate video bitrate. Video streaming solutions that consider network conditions provide users with seamless video playback. However, when multiple clients compete for a common bottleneck link, conventional bandwidth estimation schemes that consider only one client overestimate the network bandwidth due to the ON-OFF traffic pattern. The bandwidth overestimation can cause Quality of Experience (QoE) degradation, such as unnecessary changes in video quality, and unfairness of video quality. In this paper, we propose a client-side bandwidth estimation scheme to obtain a better QoE of HAS in the multiple-client environment. The proposed scheme differentiates the client buffer status according to the buffer occupancy, and then estimates the available network bandwidth based on the buffer status and segment throughput. We evaluate the performance of HAS implemented in the ns-3 network simulator. Simulation results show that compared with the conventional schemes, the proposed scheme can enhance the QoE.

  • We have tried to compare two different IDSs which are widespread over the network administrator, Snort and Suricata, in functional and performance aspects. Specifically, we focused on analyzing upon what functions for detecting threat were added newly and what Multi-Threading introduced newly for Suricata has influenced in a performance aspect. As a result, we could discover that there are some features in Suricata which has never existed in Snort such as Protocol Identification, HTTP Normalizer & Parser, and File Identification. Also, It was proved that the gap of PPS(Packets Per Second) becomes wider, as the number of CPU Cores which are working increase. Therefore, we could conclude that Suricata can be an efficient alternative for Snort considering the result that Suricata is more effective quantitatively as well as qualitatively.

  • For efficient energy usage, the concept of demand response has been emerged and thereby Open Automated D emand Response(OpenADR) protocol is developed as a standard protocol to provide automated demand response. There have been emerging trends on the demand response services using the Internet of Things(IoT) for smart h ome energy management. In this smart home energy IoT environment, a lightweight protocol is needed rather tha n the existing HTTP/ XML based OpenADR protocol for demand response services since many small devices wi ll be interconnected. In this paper, we propose a lightweight OpenADR protocol based on CoAP protocol for pro viding demand response service in Smart Energy IoT environment, implement the proposed CoAP-based protocol, and analyzed the performance compared to existing HTTP/ XML-based OpenADR 2.0b protocol.

  • HTTP is one of the most widely used protocols of the WWW. Currently it uses TCP as the transport layer protocol to provide reliability. The HTTP uses separate TCP connection for each file request and adds unnecessary head-of-line blocking overhead for the file retrieval. The web application is short sized and affected by the increased handover latency of TCP in wireless environment. SCTP has attractive features such as multi-streaming and multi-homing. SCTP's multi-streaming and multi-homing avoid head-of-line blocking problem of TCP and reduce handover latency of TCP in wired and wireless environment. Mean response time is the important measure in most web application. In this paper, we present the comparison of mean response time between HTTP over SCTP with that of HTTP over TCP in wired and wireless environments using NS-2 simulator. We measured mean response time for varying packet loss rate, bandwidth, RTT, and the number of web objects in wired environment and mean response time and packet loss rate for varying moving speed and region size in wireless environment. Our experimental result shows that SCTP reduces the mean response time of TCP based web traffic.

  • We propose a HTTP cookie-based identification of the public keys of Web sites for the case of failure to validate certificates. The proposed scheme effectively protects users from the phishing attacks of inducing them to access bogus sites. It incurs little performance overhead on the browser and the server of Web sites. It requires to implement the input processing of user credentials and the encryption and verification of cookie values, though.
