The present article briefly overviews the plan for a new project on joint technology for HTS wires/cables and describes the development plan for the world's highest field NMR magnet, which is a major development item in the project. For full-fledged social implementation of superconducting devices, high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire is a key technology since they can be cooled by liquid nitrogen and they can generate a super-high magnetic field of >>24 T at liquid helium temperatures. However, one of the major drawbacks of the HTS wires is their availability only in short lengths of a single piece of wire. This necessitates a number of joints being installed in superconducting devices, resulting in a difficult manufacturing process and a large joint resistance. In Japan, a large-scale project has commenced, including two technical demonstration items: (i) Development of superconducting joints between HTS wires, which are used in the world's highest field 1.3 GHz (30.5 T) NMR magnet in persistent current mode; the joints performance is evaluated based on NMR spectra for proteins. (ii) Development of ultra-low resistive joints between DC superconducting feeder cables for railway systems. The project starts a new initiative of next generation super-high field NMR development as well as that of realization of better superconducting power cables.
The contactless power transfer (CPT) systems have been recently gaining popularity widely since it is an available option to realize the power delivery and storage with connector-free devices across a large air gap. Especially, the CPT with electromagnetic resonance coupling method is possible to exchange energy within 2 m efficiently. However, the power transfer efficiency of CPT in commercialized products has been limited because the impedance matching of coupled coils is sensitive. As a reasonable approach, we combined the CPT system with HTS wire technology and called as, superconducting contactless power transfer (SUCPT) system. Since the superconducting coils have an enough current density, the superconducting antenna and receiver coils at CPT system have a merit to deliver and receive a mass amount of electric energy. In this paper, we present the feasibility of the SUCPT system and examine the transmission properties of SUCPT phenomenon between room temperature and very low temperature at 77 K as long as the receiver is within 1.0 m distance.
A high temperature superconductor (HTS) has been developed for power applications such as power cables, fault current limiters and superconducting magnetic energy storage devices. For such applications it is required to understand the DC voltage-current characteristic of the HTS. which is important in analyzing AC loss and flux flow loss quantitatively. In this work, we have experimentally investigated influence of several factors, e.g. critical current density. degradation and AC external magnetic field, on the DC voltage-current characteristic. The measured results have been discussed in engineering application point of view.

The conventional floating zone(FZ) crystal and Czochralski(CZ) silicon crystal have resistivity variations longitudinally as well as radially The resistivity variations of the conventional FZ and CZ crystal are not conformed to requirement of dopant distribution for power devices and thyristors. These resistivity variations in conventional cystals limits the reverse breakdown voltage that could be achieved and forced designers of high power diodes and thyristors to compromise the desired current-voltage characteristics. So to produce high Power diodes and thyristors, Neutron Transmutation Doping(NTD) technique is the one method just because NTD silicon provides very homogeneous distribution of doping concentration. This procedure involves the nuclear transmutation of silicon to phosphorus by bombardment of neutron to the crystal according to the reaction $^{30}$ Si(n,${\gamma}$)longrightarrow$^{31}$ Silongrightarrow(2.6 hr)$^{31}$ P+$\beta$$^{[-10]}$ . The radioactive isotope $^{31}$ Si is formed by $^{31}$ Si capturing a neutron, which then decays into the stable $^{31}$ P isotope (i.e., the donor atom), whose distribution is not dependent on the crystal growth parameters. In this research, neutron was irradiated on FZ silicon wafers which had high resistivity(1000~2000 Ω cm), for 26 and 8.3hours for samples of HTS-1 and HTS-2, and 13, 3.2, 2.0 hours for samples of IP-1, IP-2 and IP-3, respectively, to compare resistivity changes due to time differences. The designed resistivities were approached, which were 2.l Ωcm for HTS-1, 7.21 Ω cm for HTS-2, 1.792cm for IP-1, 6.83 Ωcm for IP-2, 9.23 Ωcm for IP-3, respectively. Point defects were investigated with Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy(DLTS). Four different defects were observed at 80K, 125K, 230K, and above 300K.
In this paper, a Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR) which forms a part of the DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been developed. This SFCL is more economical than other types with three coils since it uses only one high-Tc superconducting (HTS) coil. When DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc SFCL is developed using just one coil, fewer power electronic devices and shorter HTS wire are needed. The SFCL proposed in this paper needs a power-linking device to connect the SFCL to the power system. The design concept for this device was sprang from the fact that the magnetic energy could be changed into the electrical energy and vice versa. Ferromagnetic material is used as a path of magnetic flux. When high-Tc superconducting DC reactor is separated from the power system by using SCRs, this device also limits fault current until the circuit breaker is opened. The device mentioned above was named Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR). MCR was designed to minimize the voltage drop and total losses. Majority of the design parameters was tuned through experiments with the design prototype. In the experiment, the current density of winding conductor was found to be $1.3\;A/mm^2$, voltage drop across MCR was 20 V and total losses on normal state was 1.3 kW.

In practical applications of HTS tapes for electric devices such as coils and power cables, the jointing of HTS tapes is needed. In magnet applications superconducting joints are needed to achieve very low resistance at the joint, but for power device applications, a slightly higher joint resistance may be acceptable. In this study, an economical joint with good mechanical and electrical integrity could be achieved for Bi-2223 tapes which can be applicable to electric power applications. A lap joint method has been used. The joint resistance and strength of the jointed Bi2223 tapes have been evaluated. Electro-mechanical properties of the joint sample under tension have been examined and compared with the case of the single tapes.
Superconducting electric power devices need to stack HTS wires to increase the current carrying capacity. Uniform multi-stacked wires(UMS) which were made of the same HTS wires have been used. This paper shows the magnetization loss of hybrid multi-stacked(HMS) wire made of BSCCO wires and YBCO wires. Five HMS wires, YB(YBCO-BSCCO), YYBB. YBYB, YBBY and BYYB, were made and tested. Magnetization losses of each UMS wire were compared with corresponding HMS wire. Test results show that magnetization losses per unit length of HMS wire are between the corresponding UMS BSCCO wire and HMS YBCO wire below critical magnetic field. Above the critical magnetic field, magnetization losses of HMS wires are larger than that of corresponding both VMS wires.

In practical applications of HTS tapes for electric devices such as coils and power cables, the jointing of HTS tapes is inevitable even though long length tapes have recently been achieved. The critical current, $I_c$, degradation behaviors with tensile and bending deformations were investigated in commercially available YBCO coated conductor tapes. When the V-I relationship was measured at the jointed section of the lap-jointed YBCO CC tapes, the resistance at the joint decreased with increasing joint length. The critical load for 95% $I_c$ retention were determined for the IBAD and RABiTS YBCO tapes and they were 175 and 355N, respectively. Fracture occurred at the unjointed part which represents strong copper lamination and solder jointing. The electro-mechanical properties of lap-jointed CC tapes depended on the properties of single tapes. The V-I behavior under bending strain was similar with the tensile case.

Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) has developed a high efficient Stirling cryocooler with moving magnet linear compressor for precooling hydrogen liquefier and cooling high temperature superconductor (HTS) devices, such as superconductor cable and superconductor fault current limiters. Hydrogen liquefier and HTS electric devices require cryocooler with cooling capacity of hundred watts to kilowatts at 77 K. The compressor in the Stirling cryocooler uses opposed moving magnet linear motors to drive opposed pistons. High efficient Stirling cryocooler is designed by SAGE-software, manufactured and tested systematically. A cooling capacity of 1 kW at 77 K with an electric input power of 9.6 kW has been analyzed. But prototype test results of the Stirling cryocooler have the cooling capacity of 0.65 kW at 76.8 K with an electric input power of 8.1 kW. And then, 21.5% Carnot COP (Coefficient of performance) of the prototype Stirling cryocooler is achieved. The comparison analysis between SAGE-model and experimental results has shown the direction for further design optimization of the Stirling cryocooler.
Closed-loop J-T (Joule-Thomson) refrigeration cycle is advantageous compared to common open loop $N_2$ decompression system in terms of nitrogen consumption. In this study, two closed-loop pure $N_2$ J-T refrigeration systems with sub-atmospheric device for cooling High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) power cable are investigated. J-T cooling systems include 2-stage compressor, 2-stage precooling cycle, J-T valve and a cold compressor or an auxiliary vacuum pump at the room temperature. The cold compressor and the vacuum pump are installed after the J-T valve to create sub-atmospheric condition. The temperature of 67 K is possible by lowering the pressure up to 24 kPa at the cold part. The optimized hydrocarbon mixed refrigerant (MR) J-T system is applied for precooling stage. The cold head of precooling MR J-T have the temperature from 120 K to 150 K. The various characteristics of cold compressor are invstigated and applied to design parameter of the cold compressor. The Carnot efficiency of cold compressor system is calculated as 16.7% and that of vacuum pump system as 16.4%. The efficiency difference between the cold compressor system and the vacuum pump system is due to difference of enthalpy change at cryogenic temperature, enthalpy change at room temperature and different work load at the pre-cooling cycle. The efficiency of neon-nitrogen MR J-T system is also presented for comparison with the sub-atmospheric devices. These systems have several pros and cons in comparison to typical MR J-T systems such as vacuum line maintainability, system's COP and etc. In this paper, the detailed design of the subcooled $N_2$ J-T systems are examined and some practical issues of the sub-atmospheric devices are discussed.
