Findings of $^{99m}TC-HMPAO$ Regional Cerebral Blood Flow SPECT in a Case of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis (단순포진 뇌염의 $^{99m}TC-HMPAO$ 국소 뇌혈류 SPECT의 소견)

  • Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is one of the fulminant necrotizing, often fatal sporadic form of the encephalitis caused by herpes simplex type I virus. Characteristically, there is early and almost constant involvement of one or both temporal lobes, although there are common additional areas of involvement. Appropriate early treatment following correct diagnosis by clinical findings, CSF study, EEG and several radiological studies including angiography, redionuclide studies, CT or MRI can reduce its mortality and severity of the sequelae. We report a case of HSE diagnosed by adjuvant study of $^{99m}Tc-HMPAO$ regional cerebral blood flow SPECT, which showed a marked increase in bitemporal cerebral blood flow in a 24-year-old man.

  • This research aims to develop a procedure that help transform user's feelings or images of a product into the product's design elements. Current approach of product design has focused on providing proper functions of the product. However, as the users' needs get more diversified, it is necessary to accommodate the users' sensitive requirements in product design. The concept called Human Sensibility Ergonomics(HSE). In implementing the HSE, first, it has been surveyed the users' requirements through questionnaires or interviews. Next, has been analyzed the collected data using various statistical analysis technique, resulting in identification of the users' feelings or images of the products.

Glioblastoma Mimicking Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

  • We report a case of 70-year-old man with glioblastoma presenting as acute encephalitic illness. The patient exhibited sudden onset of cognitive impairment and headache for 2 days. Initial brain MRI showed left temporal lobe hyperintensity, and cerebrospinal fluid cytology revealed a mild pleocytosis. The patient had initially improved after medical treatment with a presumptive diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). After 8 months, the patient complained of recurrent seizures. A follow-up brain MRI revealed marked increases in size and surrounding perilesional edema in the left temporal lesion on T2-weighted images and a new contrast-enhancing lesion on gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images. Stereotactic brain biopsy revealed a glioblastoma. The atypical encephalitic presentation of glioblastoma should be considered if definitive evidence for the diagnosis of HSE cannot be obtained.

  • In order to obtain information on the structural geometry of $NH_4HSeO_4$ near the phase transition temperature, the spectrum and spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame $T_{1{\rho}}$ for the ammonium and hydrogen-bond protons were investigated through $^1H$ MAS NMR. $T_{1{\rho}}$ for the hydrogen-bond protons abruptly decreased at high temperature and it is associated with the change in the structural geometry in $O-H{\cdots}O$ bonds. This mobility of the hydrogen-bond protons may be the main reason for the high conductivity.

  • 유기 화학에서 Aromatic 화합물은 내부 전자의 비편재화로 인해 부가적인 에너지적 안정성을 얻는 화합물을 일컫는다. 이러한 화합물의 aromaticity를 판단하는 보편적인 기준으로는 Huckel's rule이 널리 알려져 있다. 그러나 Huckel's rule은 복잡한 화합물에서는 적용이 어려울 뿐 아니라 최근에는 Huckel's rule에서 벗어난 aromatic 화합물이 보고되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 Huckel's rule의 한계를 보완하고자 aromatic 화합물의 에너지적, 구조적, 자기적 성질을 계산화학적 방법으로 분석하고 이를 토대로 체계적인 기준을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서는 동일한 수의 탄소와 수소로 구성된 $C_nH_n$ 형태의 annulene 또는 annulene 라디칼과 이들의 이온을 계산 대상으로 설정하여 homodesmotic stabilization energy (HSE), C-C결합 길이, nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS)를 산출해내기 위한 density functional theory (DFT) 계산을 수행하였다. 그 결과 aromatic 화합물은 공통적으로 0보다 큰 HSE 값을 가지며 C-C결합 길이가 비교적 일정하고 0보다 작은 NICS 값을 갖는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
