New electron deficient acceptor-acceptor-acceptor type of monomer unit composed of weak electron accepting benzimidazole and relatively strong electron accepting benzothiadiazole derivatives namely 4,7-bis(6-bromo-1-(2-ethylhexyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BBB) was synthesized. The Stille polycondensation of the newly synthesized BBB monomer with electron donating 2,6-bis(trimethyltin)-4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) afforded donor-acceptor-acceptor-acceptor type of polymer namely 2,6-(4,8-bis(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-bis(1-(2-ethylhexyl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (PBDTBBB). The opto-electrical studies revealed that the absorption band of PBDTBBB appeared in the range of 300 nm-525 nm and its highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels were positioned at -5.18 eV and -2.84 eV, respectively. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the polymer solar cell (PSC) prepared from PBDTBBB:PC71BM (1:2 wt %) blend was 1.90%.

New green host materials, 9-phenyl-3-(4-(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d] imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole (3a) and 9-(naphthyl-2-yl)-3-(4-(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole (3b), have been designed and synthesized by attaching the electron transporting benzimidazole moiety to the hole transporting carbazole unit. These compounds have similar HOMO, LUMO levels and band-gap characteristics compared with CBP (4,4'-di(N-carbazolyl)biphenyl). The fabricated green phosphorescent OLED with this 3a host shows much better device performances compared to CBP-based one. The current and power efficiency is enhanced at least by 60 percent at a given constant luminance of 1000 cd/$m^2$.
This study examined the photoemission behaviors of isolated chains of poly[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene](MEH-PPV) dispersed in various solvents including dichloromethane, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran(THF). A change in polymer-solvent interactions in these solutions caused the MEH-PPV chains to adopt different local conformations, which in turn affected their radiative de-excitation pathways. For the polymer in dichloromethane and chloroform, in which the conjugated chains are relatively extended, photoemission occurs mostly at the long chromophores with lowest HOMO-LUMO energy gap. Their emission spectra showed a main peak at ${\sim}560\;nm$. Dual photoemission of high- and low-energy chromophores was observed when the conjugated chains were forced to partially collapse in a poor solvent THF. Novel high-energy peaks and a typical low-energy peak were detected at ${\sim}414\;nm$ and ${\sim}554\;nm$, respectively. The observation of the high-energy peaks indicates significant suppression of the intrachain energy transfer process, which was attributed to the increase in conformational disorder in the partially collapsed coils. An analysis of the excitation spectra suggests that the high-energy peaks belong to short chromophores constituting of one or two repeat units. This study systematically investigated the effects of polymer concentration, temperature and single bond defects along the backbone on the photoemission of the high-energy chromophores.

Organic light-emitting device (OLED) have become very attractive due to their potential application in flat panel displays. One important problem to be solved for practical application of full-color OLED is development of three primary color (Red, Green and Blue) emitting molecule with high luminous operation. Particularly, the development of organic materials for blue electroluminescence (EL) lags significantly behind that for the other two primary colors. For this reason, Flu-Si was synthesized and characterized by means of high-resolution mass spectro metry and elemental analyses. Flu-Si has the more wide optical band gap (Eg = 3.86) than reference material (Cz-Si, Eg = 3.52 eV). We measured the photophysical and electrochemical properties of Flu-Si. The HOMO-LUMO levels were estimated by the oxidation potential and the onset of the UV-Vis absorption spectra. The EL properties were studied by the device fabricated as a blue light emitting material with FIrpic.
The transition from aromatics to heteroaromatics is very attractive since it provides an extremely large structural variety, the chemical functionality as well as the possibilities for electronic tuning of the fullerene properties. A synthesis of heterofullerenes in macroscopic quantities is unknown however the spectrometric detection of $C_{59}B$ has been reported. The electronic structures of $C_{(60-2x)}(BN)_x$ systems, isoelectronic with $C_{60}$ have been explored by Extended Hukel, AM1 and ab initio methods. The polyhedral assembly energy are 7.7 kcal greater than $C_{60}$ when one B-N unit is substituted with C-C unit. The assembly energies are getting bigger if more B-N unit is introduced. We focus on HOMO-LUMO energy gap and the stability effects in $C_{(60-2x)}(BN)_x$ with different compositions of $(BN)_x$ moiety. The bonding properties of the substituent atoms were investigated in detail.
A new luminescent polymer, poly{1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl-2'-[2"-(4'"-octyloxyphenyl)-(5"-yl)-1",3",4"-oxadiazole]-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl-2,5-bis-dodecyloxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenediyl} (Oxd-PPV), was synthesized by the Heck coupling reaction. Electron withdrawing pendant, conjugated 1,3,4-oxadiazole (Oxd), is on the vinylene unit. The band gap of the polymer figured out from the UV-visible spectrum was 2.23 eV and the polymer film shows bright yellow emission maximum at 552 nm. The electroluminescence (EL) maximum of double layer structured device (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Oxd-PPV/Al) appeared at 553 nm. Relative PL quantum yield of Oxd-PPV film is 3.6 times higher than that of MEH-PPV film. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of Oxd-PPV figured out from the cyclic voltammogram and the UV-visible spectrum are -5.32 and -3.09 eV, respectively, so that more balanced hole and electron injection efficiency can be expected compared to MEH-PPV. A double layer EL of Oxd-PPV has an maximum efficiency of 0.15 cd/A and maximum brightness of 464 cd/$m^2$.

The structural and electronic properties of $XAu_{16^-}$ (X = S or O) have been studied by the scalar relativistic all-electron density functional calculations, in which a particular attention is paid to the stability of various $XAu_{16^-}$ structures. We find that an X-encapsulated golden cage ($XAu_{16^-}$) represents an ionic character whereas in the other structures, adsorption characters are represented by covalent bonding. Especially, in S@$Au_{16^-}$, electrons are donated from the S atom to $Au_{16^-}$. The most stable $XAu_{16^-}$ structures exhibit a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, indicating that they could be chemically reactive. We also calculated the activation energy barriers of the transition between the most stable exohedral and endohedral adsorption configurations as well as their reaction energies. Our results demonstrate that the activation barrier in the $OAu_{16^-}$ is lower than in $SAu_{16^-}$. This is associated with the smaller atomic radius of oxygen than that of sulfur.

We fabricated a pentacene thin film transistor with Poly-vinylalcohol (PVA) as a dielectric. And we used Poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) as a buffer layer to improve the electrical characteristics. PVK is a material used often host material for OLED device, as it has good film forming properties, large HOMO-LUMO(highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) bandgap. The performance of a OTFT device with PVA gate dielectric was improved by using the PVK. Field effect mobility, threshold voltage, and on-off current ratio of device with PVK layer were about 0.6 $cm^2$/Vs, -17V, and $5\times10^5$, respectively.
Electrophilic substitutions on β-position of 2,5-dimethyl pyrrole have been investigated theoretically. The electron donating methyl groups enrich electron densities on C-3, C-4 positions and π* interactions with methyl groups substituted on C-2 and C-5 positions pushed up the HOMO level of the pyrroles consequently induce rapid substitutions on C-3, C-4 sites. Substitution of phenylsulfonyl group on nitrogen stabilized LUMO levels through weak π bonding interactions. Unexpected deoxidation reaction underwent on the sulfonyl group substituted at C-3 position. The structures were solved by X-ray crystallography. Meanwhile, gas phase HF/6-31G* and density functional method (B3LYP/6-31G*) calculations gave favorable energies for 1-phenylsulfinyl pyrrole (6) over 3-phenylsulfinyl pyrrole (5) by 3.6-4.7 kcal/mol which is contrary to the experimental result. However the methods involve the effects of molecular polarizability and solvent, molecular dynamics (MD) and ab-initio self consistent reaction field (SCRF) calculations showed same trend as experiments. According to MD calculations, compound 5 is more stable than compound 6 by 4.15 kcal/mol and the SCRF, HF/6-31G* calculations gave more stable energy value for structure 5 than 6 by 0.03 kcal/mol.
A quantum-chemical study of conformations and electronic structures of polyheterocyclic derivatives with vinylenediheteroatom substituents at the 3- and 4-positions was performed to search for novel blue-lightemitting conjugated polymers. Conformational potential energy curves of the polymers were constructed as a function of the helical angle (a) through semiempirical Hartree-Fock band calculations at the Austin model 1 level. It is found that poly(3,4-vinylenedioxythiophene) possesses a quite flat curve in the range of α = 51.4°- 120°. Replacing S atoms for O atoms greatly increases repulsion between the neighboring units, and thereby the units become perpendicular to one another. Because of the hydrogen bonding between O and NH, poly(3,4- vinylenedioxypyrrole) is predicted to be anti-coplanar and poly(3,4-vinylenediaminofuran) to be nearly anticoplanar. According to the modified extended Huckel band calculations, the HOMO-LUMO gaps (HLGs) of the polymers, unless the polymer chains are twisted, are close to or slightly smaller than those of their respective mother polymers. Among the polymers, poly(3,4-vinylenedioxythiophene) is presumed to be the most probable candidate for a blue-light emitter because its HLG is within the range of the electronic requirement for blue-light emitters.
